Origami Workshops with Sharon Ishii-Jordan (Read More)

As part of its Voices AMPLIFIED! series, Omaha Performing Arts is presenting a hands-on origami program that blends history, culture, and art. Local origami artist Dr. Sharon Ishii-Jordan will take participants through the traditional practice of this delicate Japanese art form. Two sessions will be offered, one at 7:00 p.m. on January 22, and one at 2:00 p.m. on January 25. Registration is required. The suggested ticket price is $10, but options to pay more or less are available, including a free ticket for people for whom cost is a barrier. Sharon Ishii-Jordan is a retired Associate Dean and professor emerita of education at Creighton University, known for her work in special education and cultural programming, including teaching the art and modern applications of origami.

Great Plains lecture: “Rescuing” Japanese American Histories of Nebraska (Read More)

Learn about the vibrant histories of Japanese Americans in Nebraska from the late 19th Century to the present and the community-led efforts to maintain them in this screening and panel discussion. This event begins with a screening of Nebraska Public Media’s recently aired “Nebraska Stories: Rescuing the Japanese Hall” episode (30 minutes), followed by a panel of Japanese American community members, Vickie Sakurada Schaepler (Japanese Hall and History Project Coordinator), Kim Hachiya (community descendant), and Sharon Ishii-Jordan (Professor Emerita at Creighton University and community descendant), and the senior producer of “Nebraska Stories,” Kay Hall. This event will be moderated by Dr. Donna Doan Anderson. This is part of the Paul A. Olson Great Plains lecture series by the Center for Great Plains Studies.

Alongside a special "Japanese Hall" episode for season 16 of Nebraska Public Media’s cultural series “Nebraska Stories", several in-person events surrounding the story of the Japanese Hall and History Project on the Legacy of the Plains Museum campus will take place in Gering and Scottsbluff. Alongside a special "Japanese Hall" episode for season 16 of Nebraska Public Media’s cultural series “Nebraska Stories", several in-person events surrounding the story of the Japanese Hall and History Project on the Legacy of the Plains Museum campus will take place in Gering and Scottsbluff. Below is the schedule for events at Legacy of the Plains Museum. 10:30 Julie Ushio presents Graves of Early Immigrants in the LPM Great Hall; afterwards she will lead a walking tour of Fairview Cemetery. (Transportation on your own to the cemetery.)
