Designing “Aha moments” in Intercultural Communicative Competence Experience

The NDE World Language Guest Speaker Series is a joint effort between NDE World Language, NIAL (Nebraska International Language Association), and CLTA SIG K12 (Chinese Language Teacher Association Small Interest Group K12). The series includes language-specific and non-language-specific webinars from world language educators and experienced language teachers in and outside of Nebraska.
Alicia Shoemaker, the 2024 American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Teacher of the Year, will present “Designing ‘Aha moments’ in Intercultural Communicative Competence Experience”. Her presentation will include how indigenous languages are being taught in public schools in Nebraska.

Alicia Dallman Shoemaker is the District Department Chair, PLC Leader, and a World Language Educator with Elkhorn Public Schools in Elkhorn, NE. Dallman Shoemaker is the 2023 Central States Languages for All Teacher of the Year and the 2022 Nebraska International Language Association Teacher of the Year. She holds an Education Specialist Degree and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Doane University, and a BA in Spanish and English Education from Nebraska Wesleyan University. She is also President of the Malaika Foundation; a Modern Language Methods Instructor: Department of Education at Nebraska Wesleyan University; and serves on a variety of leadership committees at the local, state, and national levels.
