The following is a set of general  questions to assist with the application process for the Humanities Nebraska ARP Grant.

1. Is a specific project required for this grant?

No, a specific project is not required for an ARP Grant. Award funds are intended to be used for any of the following:

  • Create jobs
  • Preserve jobs
  • Support or maintain general operations
  • Create humanities programs
  • Sustain humanities programs
  • Implement new humanities activities
  • Sustain existing humanities activities.
  • Other

2. Who is eligible to apply for the ARP Grant? 

Only Nebraska-based non-profit organizations, accredited public and 501(c)(3) institutions of higher education, state and local government agencies, and federally recognized Native American tribal governments are eligible to apply.

Organizations applying for this grant must offer humanities-based programming as a significant part of their work. They should also continue to experience or expect to experience financial hardship due to the effects of Covid-19. (Examples include, but are not limited to, staffing cutbacks, suspension of programming or activities, or loss of revenue.) Those applying must obtain and retain a Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number.

3. Who is not eligible to apply for the ARP Grant?

Individuals, for-profit entities, and fiscal sponsors may not apply.  

4. If my organization applied for a Humanities Nebraska Relief grant in 2020 or 2021, can we apply for this round of funding? 

Yes, we encourage all organizations who applied for a Humanities Nebraska Relief grant to apply again. 

5. What costs are eligible for support under the ARP grant? 

Eligible expense items include, but are not limited to any of the following costs:

  • Humanities programming (in person or virtual)
  • General operating costs of humanities focused organizations (Organizations whose mission falls outside of the humanities are not eligible to receive funds for general operations costs). 
  • Strategic planning and capacity building efforts related to preparing, responding to, and recovering from the coronavirus
  • Technical/consultant needs related to a digital transition or in support of preservation and access programs (equipment costs cannot exceed 20% of grant request)
  • Expansion, due to the effects of the coronavirus, of outdoor and virtual humanities programming and activities, from traditional environments to those that are more accessible.
  • Equity assessments and planning related to coronavirus and the economic crisis

6. What costs are not eligible for support under the ARP Grant?

Expenses that are not eligible include, but are not limited to, any of the following costs:

  • Indirect costs on general operating support awards
  • Overlapping project costs with any other pending or approved application(s) for federal funding and/or approved federal awards
  • Funds for activities supported by other non-NEH federal funds
  • Competitive regranting
  • Cancellation costs
  • Pre-award costs prior to July 1, 2021
  • Equipment costs in excess of 20% of total grant request
  • Travel (both foreign and domestic)
  • Construction, purchase of real property, major alteration and renovation
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Collections acquisition
  • The preservation, organization, or description of materials that are not regularly accessible for research, education, or public programming
  • Promotion of a particular political, religious, or ideological point of view
  • Advocacy of a particular program of social or political action
  • Support of specific public policies or legislation
  • Lobbying
  • Projects that fall outside of the humanities and the humanistic social sciences including the creation of performance art and quantitative social science research or policy studies are ineligible to receive funding.
  • According to NEH ARP guidelines, creative writing, autobiographies, memoirs, creative nonfiction and writing workshops are ineligible Additionally, organizations whose mission falls outside of the humanities and the humanistic social sciences (including the creation or performance of art; creative writing, autobiographies, memoirs, and creative nonfiction; and quantitative social science research or policy studies) are not eligible to receive funding for general operating costs under NEH ARP awards.

7. What specific documents do I need to submit along with the application for the ARP grant? 

Additional documents are not required as part of the ARP Grant application. However, if this is your first time applying for a grant through Humanities Nebraska you will need to submit proof of your status as a 501(c)(3) institution.
