When HN funds humanities programs focusing on public issues such as governmental or institutional policy or current legislation, the intent of the programs, when taken as a whole, must be to foster better understanding of the issues considered, not to-promote a particular viewpoint or course of action. It is the Council’s responsibility to ensure that the project provides ample opportunity for diverse--though not necessarily antithetical--points of view and that no project advocates a specific solution to a problem, presents a single resolution of an issue, or exhorts the audience to a particular course of action. HN does advocate, through the programs it funds, public understanding and appreciation of the humanities and the values intrinsic in the humanities.
