DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nFrom family and memory to the absurdities of daily life\, Greg Kosmicki’s poetry has been praised for its honesty and openness. His poetry balances humor\, sorrow\, and the mystery of being human. \nGreg Kosmicki has published eight chapbooks and seven full-length collections of poetry with ten different presses. His most recent collection\, The dog has no answers\, was published in September\, 2023\, by Main Street Rag Publishing Co. His 2016 collection\, It’s As Good Here as it Gets Anywhere\, from Logan House Press\, was a finalist for the 2017 High Plains Book Award. Individual poems of his have been published in Paris Review\, New Letters\, Nimrod\, Cimarron Review\, Kansas Quarterly\, Briar Cliff Review\, Laurel Review\, Poetry NOW\, and many others. His poems have been selected to be read on “Writer’s Almanac.” He has twice been awarded an Artist’s Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council for his poetry. In 1998\, he founded The Backwaters Press\, which published more than 100 books under his direction\, until it was given to the University of Nebraska Press in 2017 as an imprint of that press.

In this generative workshop\, participants will read contemporary ecopoets\, question the limits of language\, and write new work that reimagines responsibility beyond the self. \nH. G. Dierdorff is a poet from the scablands and pine savannas of eastern Washington\, the ancestral\, unceded land of the interior Salish people. She is the author of Rain\, Wind\, Thunder\, Fire\, Daughter\, which was published by the University of Nevada Press in 2024 and is a finalist for the 2026 Oregon Book Award. Their work has been awarded a Vermont Studio Center Fellowship and appeared in journals such as Cut Bank\, The Shore\, Arkansas International\, and Willow Springs. You can currently find them in Portland\, where they teach writing at Clackamas Community College and poetry through Literary Arts.

Through surrealist poems and playful prompts\, this generative workshop helps poets tap the unconscious\, challenge repression\, and unlock bolder\, more imaginative work. \nKemi Alabi is the author of Against Heaven (Graywolf Press\, 2022)\, selected by Claudia Rankine as winner of the Academy of American Poets First Book Award. The collection was a Kate Tufts Discovery Award finalist\, Chicago Review of Books Award winner\, and one of New York Public Library’s Best Books of 2022\, among other honors. Alabi’s poems have appeared in The Atlantic\, The Nation\, Poetry\, Boston Review\, the Grammy-nominated album “Difficult Grace\,” and elsewhere. Alabi is co-editor of The Echoing Ida Collection (Feminist Press\, 2021)\, an anthology of Black reproductive justice writing. They’ve spent over a decade building narrative power for trans and queer bodily autonomy\, most recently as the 2024-2025 Feminist in Residence at Northwestern University. Alabi is currently the inaugural Beloit Poetry Journal Iron Mouth Curatorial Fellow. Born in Wisconsin on a Sunday in July\, they now live in Chicago\, IL.

DESCRIPTION:Renowned author and historian Richard Norton Smith will speak about Willa Cather\, My Mortal Enemy\, and Cather’s enduring place in American literature. Registration is required to receive an event link. \nRichard Norton Smith is an author\, historian\, biographer\, and former director of five presidential libraries\, including the Herbert Hoover\, Dwight D. Eisenhower\, Ronald Reagan\, and the Gerald R. Ford; the founding executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum; and founding director of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas. \nThe Willa Cather Author Series is a free program that features mostly virtual but occasional in-person authors who explore humanities topics related to Willa Cather\, Great Plains history\, and art across a variety of styles and genres. The author series was conceived as a way to connect Cather to contemporary writers\, as well as provide an accessible and inclusive space where readers can talk directly with writers about their work. Participating authors discuss how they create their work\, thematic connections within and outside of their texts\, and how their writing depicts shared experiences. Each author series event is designed to include a prepared discussion with the moderator and author(s)\, as well as ample time for audience Q&A.

Join us for an evening of poems that reflect on home\, time\, and the ways we grow into our best selves. \nMark Sanders is a Nebraska native\, born in Creighton and raised on the eastern rim of the Sandhills at Ord. Among his books of poetry are The Suicide (1988)\, Before We Lost Our Ways (1996)\, Here in the Big Empty (2006)\, Conditions of Grace: New and Selected Poems (2011)\, Landscapes\, with Horses (2018)\, and In a Good Time (2019).  The latter two books received Nebraska Book Awards; Landscapes\, with Horses was awarded the 2019 Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.  His edited works include A Sandhills Reader: 30 Years of Great Writing from the Great Plains and The Weight of the Weather: Regarding the Poetry of Ted Kooser\, both recipients of the Nebraska Book Award\, in 2016 and 2018 respectively.  In 2007\, he was awarded the Mildred Bennett Award for fostering Nebraska’s literary heritage.  His most recent book is Homecoming Parade:  Memoir  (2024)\, and his next book of poems\, The Messiah Horse:  Poems…

Join us for an evening of poems that are poignant\, quirky\, and unexpectedly warm. \nBrad Aaron Modlin came to Nebraska to be a professor/The Reynolds Endowed Chair of Creative Writing at University of Nebraska\, Kearney and teach undergraduates & in the online creative writing master’s program. The sandhill cranes were a bonus! His internationally viral poetry has been experienced two million times. His book Everyone at This Party Has Two Names is available from Black Lawrence Press. His work appears in the Pushcart Prize anthology; Brevity; Poetry Unbound; The Slowdown; & The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Also orchestral scores\, Australian art galleries\, Brooklyn public art\, and his grampa’s refrigerator. He has received support from the Banff Centre\, Sewanee Writer’s Conference\, & the Nebraska Arts Council. He likes talking with strangers and asking friends to share examples of hope.

In this generative workshop\, writers will use meals\, cooking\, and shared rituals to open new pathways into elegy\, deepen personal memory\, and draft new work in a supportive space. \nPreeti Vangani is a poet & writer from Bombay based in San Francisco. She is the author of the poetry collections\, Mother Tongue Apologize (2019) and Fifty Mothers\, (River River Books\, 2026). Her work has appeared in AGNI\, The Georgia Review\, Gulf Coast\, Prairie Schooner among other places. Her debut short story won the 2021 Pen/Dau Emerging Writers Prize. Vangani has been a resident at UCross\, Djerassi and Ragdale. Her poems have appeared in Oberon\, Fish Anthology\, Epoch\, The Maine Review\, The MacGuffin\, Commonweal\, Cloudbank\, Subtropics\, and elsewhere. She has taught English and creative writing at Sierra College and is a longtime member of the Community of Writers. Her chapbook\, Flat Water: Nebraska Poems\, was published by Finishing Line Press. Her poetry book\, The Watching Sky\, was published by Cornerstone Press in 2024 and received the Nebraska Book Award in Poetry for 2025.

In this workshop\, explore rhythm\, tone\, and improvisation to create long-form poems that sing—expanding your sense of structure\, continuity\, and flow. \nALLISON ADELE HEDGE COKE is a  Distinguished Professor University of California Riverside (2016–) and teaches for the Department of Creative Writing and the School of Medicine\, where she directs the DE In Medical Health and Humanities. Hedge Coke was recently awarded the Thomas Wolfe Prize (& Lecture)\, UNC/Thomas Wolfe Society\, the AWP George Garrett Award and was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters. She served as the 2022 Mellon Dean’s Professor at UCR and the 2020 Dan & Maggie Inouye Chair in Democratic Ideals at the University of Hawai’i Mānoa\, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Montenegro (2019). She formerly held the Paul & Clarice Reynolds Chair (University of Nebraska 2007-2012) and taught for the University of Nebraska MFA Program from 2007-2016\, was a Visiting Distinguished Writer (University of Hawai’i Mānoa\, 2014-15)\, an NEH Visiting Distinguished Chair (Hartwick College 2004)\, and was a Visiting Artist-Writer (University of Central Oklahoma 2012-2014).

He captures the quirks and truths of Great Plains life with wit and warmth. \nChuck Peek is a Provincetown storyteller who musician Zoe Lewis called “one of the magic people we have met on the road of life\,” and some witty guy once dubbed him “the Johnathan Winters of Willa Cather Scholars.” His curriculum vita began by citing driving the Etoile in Paris at morning rush hour and holding the liquor license for the Cather Foundation. One book\, two chapbooks\, and dozens of individual poems later (one of them in Ted Kooser’s This American Life in Poetry\,) someone decided he was a poet. All that while he taught at four universities as academia in America crumbled.

DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nAlthough one of the most famous writers of the sonnet was Shakespeare\, the form has existed since the 13th century. In this history-meets-poetry workshop\, participants will explore classic and contemporary sonnets\, from poets like Petrarch\, Edna St. Vincent Millay\, Terrance Hayes\, and Nicole Tallman. We’ll look at the way that poets use the sonnet form to address the issues of their time and how this “little song” has evolved over its long existence. Participants will walk away with a broad understanding of the Sonnet\, the way its conventions both draw on and continually inspire other forms of poetry\, and ways to try writing their own “little songs.”​ \nAlison Lubar is a queer biracial Nikkei poet and educator who teaches literature to teenagers\, writing to adults\, and yoga to all ages. They’re the author of two full-length poetry books\, The Other Tree\, winner of Harbor Editions’ 2023 Laureate Prize\, and METAMOURPHOSIS (fifth wheel press\, 2024)\, four chapbooks\, Philosophers Know Nothing About Love (Thirty West\, 2022)\, queer feast (Bottlecap Press\, 2022)\, sweet euphemism (Mouthfeel Press\, 2023)\, and It Skips a Generation (Stanchion\, 2023)\, and a forthcoming microchap\, American Kintsugi (Bull City Press\, 2026). Alison is also a board member for Philadelphia’s Blue Stoop.

Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nKim McNealy Sosin is a retired university professor of economics who eagerly took up writing poetry and photography in retirement\, making her a “new poet” in her seventies. She loves to create ekphrastic poetry using her own travel photographs. Her poems and photographs have appeared in publications including Raw Art Review\, Fine Lines (poems and several cover photos)\, Failed Haiku\, Voices from the Plains\, Verses from the Plains (several poems and cover design)\, Landscape Photography Magazine\, The Heron’s Nest\, The Good Life Review (poem and cover photo)\, Wanderlust Journal\, Ekphrastic Review\, and Sandcutters. She published her first poetry chapbook\, Not Quite on Grand Avenue: Poems of the Early Years\, which explores the challenges and joys of growing up as a young girl in a rural town in the forties and fifties. SUMMARY:Panel discussion: From Eugenics to Ethics: Lessons for Today’s Medical Community
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition at the Calvin T. Ryan Library on the University of Nebraska Kearney campus\, an online panel discussion will be held by the Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library on the University of Nebraska Medical Center Campus. \nMedicine has come a long way—but its past still shapes the present. \nMcGoogan Library presents a thought-provoking panel\, exploring the troubling legacy of eugenics in medicine and its enduring impact on healthcare ethics. Matthew K. Wynia\, MD\, MPH and Patricia Heberer-Rice\, PhD\, MA\, will discuss how misguided “science” once justified harm\, and how those historical practices influenced the medical education\, policy\, and the ethical frameworks that guide contemporary care. Through critical reflection\, the discussion will highlight lessons for today’s clinicians and researchers\, emphasizing the importance of equity\, autonomy\, and justice in medical decision-making. \nTo register for the event\, please visit: Webinar Registration – Zoom \nMatthew K. Wynia\, MD\, MPH is a professor of medicine and of public health at the University of Colorado\, where he directs the CU Center for Bioethics and Humanities. \nPatricia Heberer-Rice\, PhD\, MA joined the United States Holocaust Memorial and Museum in 1994 and is now the Museum’s senior historian. \nThis presentation is provided in partnership with Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the Calvin T. Ryan Library at the University of Nebraska-Kearney\, host of Americans and the Holocaust: A Traveling Exhibition for Libraries made possible by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association. The Leon S. McGoogan Library developed a companion exhibition highlighting these themes\, A Poisoned Practice: The Holocaust\, Medical Complicity\, and the American Response\, on display at McGoogan Library\, Level 8\, Witson Hall and online.
