SUMMARY:Mapping the World\, Writing the Self: Desire\, Identity\, & Global Imagination in Jesuit Missions
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to long for a distant world so intensely that you petition\, in writing\, to leave everything behind? How do people learn to narrate themselves? This lecture explores the 25\,000 handwritten letters composed between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries by Jesuit novices and priests to their Superior General in Rome\, seeking assignment to overseas missions. \nRegistration is required. \nDr. Emanuele Colombo\, Professor at Boston College and director of the Digital Indipetae Database project\, will discuss how this unique collection is transforming our understanding of aspiration\, identity\, and global connection in the Jesuit world. \nMBSC 228\, Milo Bail Student Center\, Omaha\nFree and open to the public | Free parking with registration \nSponsored by UNO History Department & the College of Arts & Sciences \n

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop with Gary Soto
DESCRIPTION:Gary Soto is known for a body of work that deals with the realities of growing up in Mexican American communities. In poems\, novels\, short stories\, plays and over two dozen books for young people\, Soto recreates the world of the barrio\, the urban\, Spanish-speaking neighborhood where he was raised\, bringing the sights\, sounds and smells vividly to life within the pages of his books. Soto’s poetry and prose focus on everyday experiences while evoking the harsh forces that often shape life for Chicanos\, including racism\, poverty\, and crime. (Excerpt taken from the Poetry Foundation.) \nGary Soto’s workshop is part of the Touring Artist Series of the All Writes Reserved Youth Poetry Festival. \nTicket required.
