DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the 71st Annual Willa Cather Spring Conference on June 4-6\, on the theme of “Memory\, Myth\, and Meaning: Cather in Dialogue with America 250.” Click here for more information about the conference. \nRebecca Romney’s lecture on “Willa Cather\, the Archival Chain\, and the Making of a Literary Legacy” considers the effects of archival collections on the writing of literary history\, with special emphasis on Cather’s posthumous legacy. Such collections are not formed accidentally. They exist through the efforts of individual people\, archival agents who save material\, become its long-term caretakers\, and make it accessible for study. The decisions of archival agents\, big and small\, can cause ripple effects across the stories we tell. \nThis event is free\, but registration is strongly encouraged to reserve your spot and receive event updates by email! Click here for more information and to register. \nThe talk will be broadcast live on YouTube and a recording will be available for two weeks after the event. \n  \nRebecca Romney is a rare book dealer and author of three books\, Jane Austen’s Bookshelf\, Printer’s Error: Irreverent Stories from Book History)\, and The Romance Novel in English: A Survey in Rare Books. As a generalist rare book dealer\, Romney handles work in all fields\, from first editions of Jane Austen to science fiction paperbacks to Shakespeare Folios. Since 2011\, Romney has appeared on the HISTORY Channel’s television show Pawn Stars as the rare book specialist. Romney was also featured in The Booksellers\, a documentary about the rare book trade in New York that premiered at the New York Film Festival. Her work has been featured in The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Forbes\, Variety\, The Paris Review\, and more. With a passion for discussing the enduring power of literature\, the relevance of book collecting\, and the preservation of history\, Romney weaves together her experience and knowledge in captivating talks.

John Swift taught English at Occidental College in Los Angeles from 1981 until his retirement in 2019. Steve Tamayo draws upon his family history as a member of the Sicangu Lakota tribe.

DESCRIPTION:Jane Smiley’s talk on Willa Cather\, My Ántonia and the Life of a Writer will mark the conclusion of a year-long celebration of Cather’s 1918 novel as a title selected by the National Endowment for the Arts’ 2024-2025 Big Read program. \nJane Smiley is the author of numerous novels\, including A Thousand Acres\, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize\, and other novels\, most recently Lucky. She is also the author of several works of nonfiction and books for young adults. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, Smiley has also received the PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature. She resides in Northern California. \nThis event\, part of the 70th annual Willa Cather Spring Conference\, is free to attend thanks to the generosity of Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. DESCRIPTION:Karen Russell will discuss her new novel\, The Antidote. Set in Uz\, a fictional Nebraska town\, in the aftermath of Black Sunday\, The Antidote follows a “Prairie Witch\,” whose body serves as a bank vault for peoples’ memories and secrets; a Polish wheat farmer who learns how quickly a hoarded blessing can become a curse; his orphan niece\, a basketball star and witch’s apprentice in furious flight from her grief; a voluble scarecrow; and a New Deal photographer whose time-traveling camera threatens to reveal both the town’s secrets and its fate. \nRegistration is requested for this free\, in-person event. See event website for details. \nKaren Russell is the author of six books of fiction\, including the New York Times bestsellers Swamplandia! and Vampires in the Lemon Grove. She has received MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Born and raised in Miami\, Florida\, she now lives in Portland\, Oregon with her husband\, son\, and daughter. The Antidote is her second novel. \nThe Willa Cather Author Series is a free program that features mostly virtual but occasional in-person authors who explore humanities topics related to Willa Cather\, Great Plains history\, and art across a variety of styles and genres. The author series was conceived as a way to connect Cather to contemporary writers\, as well as provide an accessible and inclusive space where readers can talk directly with writers about their work. Participating authors discuss how they create their work\, thematic connections within and outside of their texts\, and how their writing depicts shared experiences. Each author series event is designed to include a prepared discussion with the moderator and author(s)\, as well as ample time for audience Q&A.

DESCRIPTION:Last year marked the 150th anniversary of Willa Cather’s birth. The year also marked the 100th anniversary of her Pulitzer Prize for her acclaimed novel One of Ours. A dramatic reading of excerpts from One of Ours will be presented during the Art & Literary Festival presented by the Castle & Cathedral District\, Metropolitan Community College\, and the National Willa Cather Center. An ensemble of seven will give voice to Claude Wheeler and the array of characters he encounters on his journey from farm boy to Doughboy. SUMMARY:"The Last Prairie" Sandhills documentary film
DESCRIPTION:If a prairie could speak\, what would it say? The Last Prairie is a documentary film by John O’Keefe\, a theologian and documentary filmmaker at Creighton University\, that profiles the Sandhills of Nebraska\, one of the last remaining intact temperate grasslands in the world. Presented through voices from three different communities\, the film listens to ecologists who love and study the region’s biodiversity\, ranchers who live and work on its vast expanse\, and Native Lakota people whose ancestors were killed to make way for American westward expansion. \nThe film is screening as part of a “Celebrate Prairie Spring!” event at the National Willa Cather Center beginning at 1:30 p.m.\, with the film screening at 7 p.m. in the Opera House auditorium. $15 tickets are required.
