She then spent a decade in the United States working in public schools and nonprofits. When she’s not busy writing about middle schoolers and their families\, you can find her hoping to spot manatees at the beach. Andrea lives in Puerto Rico with her family and two dogs.

Her graphic novel\, Invisible\, is a nominee for the Nebraska Golden Sower Award for the 2024/25 school year. \nThe workshop is for ages 8 through 19. This event is free and participants do not need a library card. See the event page for more information. \nChristina Diaz Gonzalez is the Edgar® award-winning and USA TODAY  best-selling author of several novels including The Red Umbrella\, A Thunderous Whisper\, Moving Target\, Concealed\, Invisible: A Graphic Novel\, and The Bluest Sky. Her books have received numerous awards including the International Latino Book Award Gold Medal and have also been designated as an American Library Association’s Best Fiction for Young Adults selection\, a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People\, a Junior Library Guild Gold Selection\, and as an International Reading Association’s Teachers’ Choice book. Christina currently lives in Miami\, Florida with her family and a dog that can open doors.

But there were four members of the corps that were “valuable” but not paid. Hunt discusses these four members and tells stories of their adventures. She also dispels a few myths about these members. This program is appropriate for all ages \nRenae Hunt is a native Nebraska farm girl. She graduated from Stromsburg High School and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Utah State University. She attended Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington\, D.C.\, and is a qualified American Sign Language interpreter. She has been an active historical re-enactor and worked as a museum educator for several years. She traveled on the Mormon Trail in 1997\, and followed the Lewis and Clark Trail as a graduate student in summer 2003. In 2002\, she co-founded Traveling Historical Programs Inc.\, which presented hands-on living history programs and has done educational programs in a tri-state area. She has also been a visiting professor at several colleges and universities

SUMMARY:But\, Who Lived Here in 1491? Indigenous Archeology in Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rob Bozell \nLocation: Norfolk Public Library\, Room A \nIndigenous people have lived in what we call Nebraska for at least 13\,000 years and probably longer. Their story is much richer than what history books have taught us about the past several centuries. Over 97 precent of Indigenous history is only revealed through oral traditions and archeology. For much of that period\, people were relatively nomadic hunter-gatherers leaving a fragile archeological record. About 1500 years ago\, groups began experimenting with agriculture and building permanent homes and towns that remain as spectacular buried archeological sites. In the mid 1700s\, Indigenous culture began to change dramatically though colonialism. Archeology also helps to tell that tumultuous story of challenge and survival. \nRob Bozell is a lifelong Nebraska currently living in Omaha. He earned BA and MA degrees in Anthropology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has spent over 40 years as an archeologist and most of that working at the History Nebraska\, State Archeology Office. Bozell retired at the end of 2021 but continues to consult on various research and historic preservation projects in Nebraska and surrounding states. His professional interests include past foodways\, fur trade archeology\, and working with Indigenous tribes on repatriation and historic preservation.

Preserving the history of the Japanese in Nebraska through the preservation of a Japanese Hall built in 1928 and moved to the Legacy of the Plains Museum to showcase this history. She is a previous board member of the History Nebraska Board of Trustees\, the Buffalo County Historical Society and recently appointed to the Commission on Asian American Affairs in Nebraska.

Jose’s presentation takes you along on a journey of exploration that began in 1720 and continues in Nebraska to this very day. \nJose Francisco Garcia is of the 3rd generation with direct paternal and maternal Mexican descendants settling in the Mid-west in the early 20th Century. A Vietnam veteran\, retired railroader\, long-time Chicano activist\, Jose and his wife Linda are the founders of the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands. Now retired their time is spent on curating a research library of folk art\, historical artifacts and media\, focused on the art and civic accomplishments of Spanish-speaking/surnamed peoples of the Americas\, with a focus on the Heartlands.

Why is there MacDonalds. Why are there hamburgers” Why is the Denver football team called the Broncos? Where did the words lasso\, lariat\, rodeo\, wrangler\, and stampede come from? Find out the answers to all these questions and many more in this fascinating presentation about the origins of American cowboy\, ranch and rodeo culture. \nThis talk presents the origins and development of cowboy culture in the American West. Tracing cowboy culture’s roots from the open plains of Spain to the establishment of ranching culture in the New World\, the talk describes the role of the Spanish/Mexican vaquero in the establishment of traditional cowboy and ranching practices in the American west. The show places the historical and fictional lore of the origins of the American cowboy in the historical context of the vaquero\, the true first cowboy. \nAngel Vigil is Retired Chairman of the Fine and Performing Arts Department and Director of Drama at Colorado Academy in Denver. He is an award-winning author\, performer\, stage director and teacher. Angel is the author of six award-winning books on Hispanic and Western culture and arts and is a Colorado Heritage Artist storyteller who has performed throughout the nation at festivals\, universities\, schools and art centers. His specialty is the oral traditions of the Hispanic Southwest and he is also a member of the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities Chautauqua program for his historical presentations of 5 different figures.

Linda is with the Nebraska Arts Council’s Artists in Schools and Communities roster; Nebraska StoryArts Board; Nebraska Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau; City of Omaha Public Art Commissioner; and occasional instructor and docent with the Joslyn Art Museum. Linda and her husband\, Jose\, have an extensive collection of Mexican folk arts and literature and are co-founders of the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands.

SUMMARY:Women's Rights and the "Saucy" Mrs. Adams
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jessica Downing-Ford \nNorfolk Public Library Room A \nAbigail Adams \nFive years after Abigail Smith married John Adams\, the American colonies adopted the British law of coverture. This law held that no female person had a legal identity. At birth she was “covered” by her father’s identity and\, when she married\, by her husband’s. The husband and wife became one person: the husband. Married women owned nothing—not even the clothes on their backs. More importantly\, they had no rights over their own bodies\, or custody of the children they bore. Abigail and John’s marriage was based on mutual admiration and respect\, and Abigail understood how lucky she was. She witnessed families torn apart by husband’s drunkenness\, temper\, lack of employment and/or money mismanagement. Women in these unhappy unions were left to tolerate humiliation\, mistreatment\, and physical abuse along with their daily struggle to feed their families\, stay housed\, and stay safe. Abigail’s famous ‘remember the ladies’ letter to her husband in which she implores him to “not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands\,” speaks directly to the law of coverture. This was the women’s rights issue of her time—remnants of which still exist in the year 2022. \nJessica Downing-Ford \nJessica has always enjoyed being in the spotlight. While growing up in Braintree\, Massachusetts\, she enjoyed gymnastics\, dancing\, and acting. She attended Emerson College where she graduated in ’93 with a BFA in Dance. Jessica forgot her passion for performing and had large gaps between stage productions after becoming a mother. It was during a trip back to Massachusetts in 2014 that she caught a glimpse of her soon-to-be-heroine. She attended a reenactment of the signing of the Declaration at the Adams’ National Park on the 4th of July and was brought to tears by a reading of Abigail’s “Remember the Ladies” letter. She fell in love not only with Abigail but with the art of Chautauqua; she jokes that she’d been waiting her whole life to find an avenue for her talents. Jessica enjoys bringing Abigail to life for history classes in western Colorado as well as coaching students through the Young Chautauqua program with Colorado Humanities. She continues to research and visit Abigail’s historical sites as she deepens her understanding of this complex\, amazingly brave\, female patriot.
