DESCRIPTION:ííS (Erik Higgins and Marie Sønderskov) returns to Crossroads for an evening of Nordic Soundscapes and folk melodies. Fresh from the release of their first single\, Frozen Water and preparing for their debut full-length album\, ííS draws audiences into a luminous world of color\, sound\, and feeling\, woven from Renaissance instruments\, electronic textures\, and evocative vocals. \nAt the beginning of the presentation\, the artists will give an informal talk about the composition process and the influence of Nordic folk music\, world music and chamber music in their musical language. \nTickets for the concert are free and can be reserved online via the Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival website. \nThis event is part of the Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival\, which encompasses events in Lincoln and Omaha on July 19\, July 24 -August 2\, and August 5. This year will be a celebration and exploration of one of the most electrifying and influential moments in American history\, the Harlem Renaissance. In the 1920’s\, in African American communities in New York City and in cities throughout the North and Midwest\, creative and intellectual life thrived. \nThe main event of the festival is the production of an anthology of dramatized short stories\, essays\, and poems entitled Voices from the Harlem Renaissance\, adapted by Scott Working and directed by TammyRa’. He is currently teaching a class about the Harlem Renaissance this upcoming semester at UNO. Dr. Ramon Guerra is a distinguished scholar and educator who has been a vital part of the University of Nebraska at Omaha since 2008. As an Associate Professor in the Department of English and an active member of the Office of Latino and Latin American Studies (OLLAS)\, Dr. Guerra has made significant contributions to the study of Latinx\, postmodern\, and ethnic literatures\, as well as American Studies. He has researched\, published\, and taught broadly on multiple topics of the 20th and 21st centuries in American Literature. His dedication to teaching has earned him the Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award\, and his service includes key leadership roles such as Graduate Program Chair of English at UNO and editor of the Great Plains Quarterly journal.

(UNL ’93-Painting/Printmaking) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and affiliate faculty in both Women’s and Gender Studies and Medical Humanities at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). She is an artist and playwright who has won awards for both her visual art and writing. She received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council for her play\, The Journey\, about Aaron Douglas\, the first black graduate from the art department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1922. Her most recent play about Black radical feminist Florynce Kennedy was performed in January 2018 at the Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha\, NE. She is also in the Speaker’s Bureau of Humanities Nebraska on the topic\, Aaron Douglas\, UNL ’22. \nKim Louise\, one-act playwright and discussion leader: A native Omahan\, Kim has penned over eleven novels and five novellas\, writing for Kensington Press (BET Books)\, Genesis Press\, and Harlequin Enterprises and earned a spot on Amazon’s bestseller’s list for mass market fiction. Her poetry has been published by the Cathartic Literary Journal and Third World Press. One of her short stories appears in the national anthology Chicken Soup for the African American Soul. Kim is the past president of the New African Writer’s Workshop and has facilitated the North Omaha Summer Arts Women’s Writing Group for the past 10 years. Kim has written 20 plays–one of which received a full production at the Union for Contemporary arts. She holds Master’s of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

A dramatic reading of excerpts from One of Ours will be presented during the Art & Literary Festival presented by the Castle & Cathedral District\, Metropolitan Community College\, and the National Willa Cather Center. An ensemble of seven will give voice to Claude Wheeler and the array of characters he encounters on his journey from farm boy to Doughboy. After the dramatic readings\, attendees are invited to stay after for a talk-back conversation with the cast and crew of One of Ours. \nTickets $20 general admission\, free for teachers and students. \nVisit the festival website for more information and to purchase tickets. \nThe reading will be presented on November 15 and 17 at the Joslyn Castle in Omaha and on November 16 at the Red Cloud Opera House. DESCRIPTION:Before the ticketed reading of One of Ours at on November 17 at 7:30 p.m.\, noted Cather scholar Dr. Charles Johanningsmeir will present a free lecture about “One of Ours” in the Joslyn Castle Music Room. Doors open at 5:45 p.m.\, and the lecture begins at 6 p.m. \nDoctor Charles Johanningsmeier is Professor of English and Isaacson Professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha\, where he teaches a wide range of courses on American literature and culture. His research primarily focuses on literary matters during the period between 1865 and 1940. He is the author of the books Reimagining Realism: A New Anthology of Late 19th- and Early 20th-Century American Short Fiction (Ohio University Press\, 2022) and Fiction and the American Literary Marketplace: The Role of Newspaper Syndicates in America\, 1860-1900 (Cambridge University Press\, 1997). Most relevant for this presentation is that he has published a number of academic journal articles on Willa Cather and has delivered many presentations on Cather and her works at conferences and universities in the US and Europe. A long-time member of the Willa Cather Foundation Board of Governors\, he regularly offers a graduate seminar on Cather at UNO\, the highlight of which is an overnight trip to Cather’s hometown of Red Cloud to walk in her footsteps and thereby better understand her fictions.

Those attending the evening’s ticketed theatrical performance are welcome to stay through the 7:30pm show time. \nOCT 15 –  “How to Tell a War Story: Hemingway and Cather in Conversation”  with Tracy Tucker of the Willa Cather Center\nOCT 19 – “The 1920s\, How It Ruined Poetry For The Rest Of Us” with Nebraska State Poet Matt Mason\nOCT 22 – “The 1920s\, How It Ruined Poetry For The Rest Of Us” with Nebraska State Poet Matt Mason \n“How to Tell a War Story: Hemingway and Cather in Conversation” Though Willa Cather and Ernest Hemingway share many early influences—a Great Plains upbringing\, early journalistic experience\, and widespread critical and public acclaim for their work—they didn’t know each other and often did not share artistic sensibilities. One of their most notorious “disagreements\,” if it can be deemed one when the two parties don’t speak to each other\, is over Cather’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel\, One of Ours. Hemingway didn’t like Cather’s depictions of war\, suggesting her inspiration came from movies. That may be a somewhat reductive opinion\, and we’ll explore both Cather’s real influences and examples from Hemingway’s most famous war stories\, as we discuss the ways Hemingway was both right and wrong in his assessment of Cather’s novel One of Ours. \n“The 1920s\, How It Ruined Poetry For The Rest Of Us” Many of us don’t like poetry these days. But over 100 years ago\, it was seen as a form of entertainment\, read for pleasure\, memorized for fun. But critics took over and narrowed what people saw as poetry\, leading to a downward spiral in the broader public’s interest in poetry. \nThis event is part of the 14th annual Art & Literary Festival presented by The Castle & Cathedral District and Metropolitan Community College. This year the festival honors Hemingway & the Lost Generation\, presenting dramatic excerpts from works by Earnest Hemingway\, F.
