SUMMARY:Poetry Reading and Community Open Mic feat. Huascar Medina
DESCRIPTION:An Open Mic begins at 7 p.m. followed by a reading from Kansas Poet Laurate Emeritus Huascar Medina at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Registration is requested at bit.ly/nwc-register\n\nThis event is part of the Nebraska Writers Collective’s Visiting Writers Series.\n\n\nKansas Poet Laureate emeritus (2019-2022) and Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow\, Huascar Medina has authored two books of poetry: Un Mango Grows in Kansas and How to Hang the Moon. He is the Lit editor for seveneightfive magazine\, a staff editor at South Broadway Press in Denver\, CO\, an op-ed writer at Kansas Reflector\, a founding member and former Chair of TopekaUnited.org\, the founder of wordssavelives.org\, and co-founder of latinidad.us. Huascar was born in Killeen\, TX\, and has lived artfully in Kansas for over two decades. He considers himself a special kind of Kansan—a helianthus. Huascar took roots in Kansas\, grew there\, and blossomed. As a second-generation immigrant living in the Heartland\, Huascar pushes the boundaries between identity and location\, focusing on cultural empathy\, social cohesion\, class structures\, first-generation trauma\, minority mental health\, and internalized diasporic longing and belonging. His work has appeared in the Flint Hills Review\, Gasconade Review\, Green Mountains Review\, Kansas Magazine\, Latino Book Review\, The New York Times\, and elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop with Kush Thompson
DESCRIPTION:This workshop with Kush Thompson\, recommended for ages 16+\, is part of the Touring Artist Series of the All Writes Reserved Youth Poetry Festival. The event is free\, but registration is required. \nCloud in a Bed\, Moon in a Cage: How to Reverse-Engineer a Metaphor from Surrealist Imagery \nIn this workshop\, we’ll chisel a rabbit hole into the world within metaphor to discover what transforms when imagery unravels. Inspired by the surrealism of Mahmoud Darwish\, Remedios Varo\, and Ed\, Edd n Eddy\, this almost-ekphrastic workshop borrows alchemical imagery\, takes it apart\, and turns the abstract literal. \nAuthor of A Church Beneath the Bulldozer (2014) and creator of the pink-haired Blk Hottie portraiture series\, Kush Thompson is a Chicago-born poet\, painter\, archivist\, educator\, and a fellow of Luminarts and Cave Canem. She creates archival art; centering often on girlhood and the mechanics of memory. Her work has appeared in Poetry Magazine and The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop (2015). Kush herself can be found in the VHS bin at any given thrift store somewhere in New Orleans.

SUMMARY:Louder Than A Bomb Youth Poetry Preliminary Bouts
DESCRIPTION:Louder Than a Bomb is an annual youth poetry festival and competition featuring schools from all over Nebraska and the Great Plains. This program has impacted thousands of students\, and provided a host of paid work opportunities for accomplished area poets\, helping Nebraska retain some of its best artistic talent. We are in over 30 schools across Nebraska reaching hundreds of youth artists every day. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of LTaB! \nPRELIMINARY BOUTS will be held at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each day of the festival. \nThe festival will take place between March and April in a series of poetry bouts both in-person and virtual. \n\n\nDue to COVID-19 in order to keep everyone safe and hear your poems live\, we’re limiting capacity and live-streaming our LTAB preliminary bouts! What does that mean: All Preliminary bouts will be restricted to competing teams and coaches only. Luckily the public can catch each bout through our livestream and after on our YouTube page. \nTune into the Nebraska Writers Collective YouTube channel or Facebook page for live streaming.
