SUMMARY:Virtual Author Series: Richard Norton Smith
DESCRIPTION:Renowned author and historian Richard Norton Smith will speak about Willa Cather\, My Mortal Enemy\, and Cather’s enduring place in American literature. Registration is required to receive an event link. \nRichard Norton Smith is an author\, historian\, biographer\, and former director of five presidential libraries\, including the Herbert Hoover\, Dwight D. Eisenhower\, Ronald Reagan\, and the Gerald R. Ford; the founding executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum; and founding director of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas. \nThe Willa Cather Author Series is a free program that features mostly virtual but occasional in-person authors who explore humanities topics related to Willa Cather\, Great Plains history\, and art across a variety of styles and genres. The author series was conceived as a way to connect Cather to contemporary writers\, as well as provide an accessible and inclusive space where readers can talk directly with writers about their work. Participating authors discuss how they create their work\, thematic connections within and outside of their texts\, and how their writing depicts shared experiences. Each author series event is designed to include a prepared discussion with the moderator and author(s)\, as well as ample time for audience Q&A.

SUMMARY:Willa Cather\, the Archival Chain\, and the Making of a Literary Legacy
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the 71st Annual Willa Cather Spring Conference on June 4-6\, on the theme of “Memory\, Myth\, and Meaning: Cather in Dialogue with America 250.” Click here for more information about the conference. \nRebecca Romney’s lecture on “Willa Cather\, the Archival Chain\, and the Making of a Literary Legacy” considers the effects of archival collections on the writing of literary history\, with special emphasis on Cather’s posthumous legacy. Such collections are not formed accidentally. They exist through the efforts of individual people\, archival agents who save material\, become its long-term caretakers\, and make it accessible for study. The decisions of archival agents\, big and small\, can cause ripple effects across the stories we tell. \nThis event is free\, but registration is strongly encouraged to reserve your spot and receive event updates by email! Click here for more information and to register. \nThe talk will be broadcast live on YouTube and a recording will be available for two weeks after the event. \n  \nRebecca Romney is a rare book dealer and author of three books\, Jane Austen’s Bookshelf\, Printer’s Error: Irreverent Stories from Book History)\, and The Romance Novel in English: A Survey in Rare Books. As a generalist rare book dealer\, Romney handles work in all fields\, from first editions of Jane Austen to science fiction paperbacks to Shakespeare Folios. Since 2011\, Romney has appeared on the HISTORY Channel’s television show Pawn Stars as the rare book specialist. Romney was also featured in The Booksellers\, a documentary about the rare book trade in New York that premiered at the New York Film Festival. Her work has been featured in The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Forbes\, Variety\, The Paris Review\, and more. With a passion for discussing the enduring power of literature\, the relevance of book collecting\, and the preservation of history\, Romney weaves together her experience and knowledge in captivating talks.

SUMMARY:Creative Panel: The Kilbanes in Conversation with Peter Cipkowski
DESCRIPTION:Join Peter Cipkowski for a conversation with Kate Kilbane and Dan Moses of The Kilbanes\, the acclaimed musical duo currently adapting Willa Cather’s My Ántonia into an original stage musical. Commissioned by Theater Latté Da in Minneapolis\, their adaptation reimagines Cather’s masterpiece through their distinctive blend of storytelling and music. The panel will explore the Kilbanes’ creative process\, their decision to bring My Ántonia to the stage\, and how their musical style shapes the emotional and narrative contours of the work. \nThe discussion will also consider the creative challenge of adaptation itself: what it means to transform a beloved literary classic into a new form\, and what questions arise when a masterpiece known as one thing becomes something entirely new. \nThis event is free to attend thanks to the generosity of Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. \nThe Kilbanes (Kate Kilbane and Dan Moses) are a married composing and performing team and recipients of the 2024 Jonathan Larson Grant. Their rock musical Weightless (WP Theater\, A.C.T.\, Public Theater’s Under the Radar) was nominated for Lucille Lortel (Best Musical\, Drama Desk (Best Music)\, and Off-Broadway Alliance (Best New Musical) awards in 2023. Other works include A Whynot Christmas Carol (A.C.T.\, Pam McKinnon dir.)\, The Code (A.C.T.)\, My Ántonia (Next Generation Commission\, Theatre Latte Da in Minneapolis – upcoming)\, As You Like It (San Francisco Shakespeare Festival)\, and Eddie the Marvelous (American Music Theater Project (AMTP) O’Neill National Music Theater Conference; Berkeley Repertory Theater’s Ground Floor).

SUMMARY:Opening Plenary Session: Ann Lundberg
DESCRIPTION:Kick off the 70th Annual Willa Cather Spring Conference with a talk from Ann Lundberg\, English professor and longtime interpretive ranger\, about Cather at Mesa Verde. \nAs a professor of American Literature\, Ann studies the literature of geological and archeological exploration of the American West in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century\, and how it works to define national identity. She’s presented and published essays on topics including John Muir’s glacial geology\, “Ancient America at the World’s Fair\,” and the mystique surrounding Casa Grande in Arizona\, “The Ruin of Expectations.” Her teaching resume includes both environmental literature and eco-composition in addition to Native American Literature and other topics. \nAlongside her academic career\, Ann has served as an interpretive Ranger at eight different National Park Service units\, including three seasons at Mesa Verde. She has long maintained an interest in Willa Cather and her depiction of place\, both the prairies of Nebraska and the canyons and cliff dwellings of the Southwest. \nThis event is free to attend thanks to the generosity of Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

Set in Uz\, a fictional Nebraska town\, in the aftermath of Black Sunday\, The Antidote follows a “Prairie Witch\,” whose body serves as a bank vault for peoples’ memories and secrets; a Polish wheat farmer who learns how quickly a hoarded blessing can become a curse; his orphan niece\, a basketball star and witch’s apprentice in furious flight from her grief; a voluble scarecrow; and a New Deal photographer whose time-traveling camera threatens to reveal both the town’s secrets and its fate. \nRegistration is requested for this free\, in-person event. See event website for details. \nKaren Russell is the author of six books of fiction\, including the New York Times bestsellers Swamplandia! and Vampires in the Lemon Grove. She has received MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Born and raised in Miami\, Florida\, she now lives in Portland\, Oregon with her husband\, son\, and daughter. The Antidote is her second novel.

SUMMARY:69th Annual Willa Cather Spring Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 69th Annual Willa Cather Spring Conference will celebrate Willa Cather and reading. Cather herself was an avid reader as well as a writer; she enjoyed sharing her book recommendations with friends\, and she was pleased by hearing the comments of her own readers. From an early age\, she established her “library\,” with her books labeled and sometimes numbered in the back room of her father’s office. As our conference explores the many facets of Cather’s interactions with both her books and her readers\, we hope attendees will be inspired to examine their own relationship to Cather’s writing. \nThe conference will begin the afternoon of Thursday\, June 6\, and conclude on the evening of Saturday\, June 8. Please see the conference website for the schedule of events. \nRegistration is required. In-person registration ($150 / $75 student) includes the full schedule\, with a separate ticket needed for the Saturday evening banquet. Online-only registration ($100 / $50 student) includes limited access. \nSeveral conference events are free and open to the public. Those events are listed individually in the Humanities Nebraska calendar.

SUMMARY:Willa Cather Spring Conference: Travis Hencey artist talk and reception
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the 69th Annual Willa Cather Spring Conference\, and is free and open to the public. \nThe Field\, The Fire is a solo exhibition to be held in conjunction with the 69th annual Willa Cather Spring Conference. The conference\, Cather and the Readerly Imagination\, will focus on Cather’s own books and reading habits\, as well as her attention to the content and appearance of the books she created. The ideas of Cather as both reader and writer and her books as both story and substance seem a natural fit with Hencey’s work. \nTravis Hencey was born and raised in Chadron\, Nebraska\, a small town in the northwestern panhandle of the state. Generally\, Travis’s work deals with themes of transience\, memory\, and family history in the Western Nebraska landscape with an eye toward materiality and mark-making.

SUMMARY:Author Series and Book Signing: Gail Shaffer Blankenau
DESCRIPTION:The National Willa Cather Center is hosting an author series as a way to connect Cather to contemporary writers as well as provide an accessible and inclusive space where readers can talk directly with writers about their work. Participating authors discuss how they create their work\, thematic connections within and outside of their texts\, and and how our shared experiences inform the work. \nThis free in-person author event is part of a National Nebraska Day event. Click here for more information and for a recommended registration link. \nObserve National Nebraska Day by learning more about the complex history of the state’s south central region. Author and historian Gail Shaffer Blankenau will join us for a talk and signing of her new book\, Journey to Freedom: Uncovering the Grayson Sisters’ Escape from Nebraska Territory\, at the Red Cloud Opera House auditorium at 1:00 p.m. central time. Blankenau’s book tells the story of Celia and Eliza Grayson\, two enslaved sisters who escaped from their enslaver Stephen F. Nuckolls in 1858. \nAccording to the University of Nebraska Press\, “Gail Shaffer Blankenau provides the first detailed history of Black enslavement in Nebraska Territory and the escape of these two enslaved Black women from Nebraska City. Drawing on multiple collections\, records\, and slave narratives\, Journey to Freedom sheds light on the Graysons’ courage and agency as they became high-profile figures in the national debate between proslavery and antislavery factions in the antebellum period.”
