The exhibit highlights the department’s civil rights origins\, attempts to downgrade the department to a program\, and the mutual engagement between campus and community. The banners share archival materials such as newspaper clippings\, department documents\, and photos chronicling events from the 1969 campus sit-in to the celebration of the “Omaha 54” student activists 52 years later. The history of the Department of Black Studies has been characterized by a constant struggle for survival\, but also by the enduring engagement and support of the Omaha Black community.

SUMMARY:"On the Inside" Speaker Event: UNO TRAC (Transforming\, Renewing\, Achieving\, and Connecting) a Higher Education in Prison Program
DESCRIPTION:A virtual talk and Q&A with Ms. Peggy Jones and Dr. Steve Langan to discuss On the Inside\, a group show of LGBTQ+ artists who are currently incarcerated. Jones and Langan will be discussing their work with UNO TRAC (Transforming\, Renewing\, Achieving\, and Connecting) a Higher Education in Prison Program. The UNO TRAC program provides for-credit general education and Inside-Out classes to incarcerated students at the Omaha Correctional Center\, a student organization for formerly incarcerated students on campus\, and community symposia highlighting trends and problems connected to higher education in prison\, mass incarceration\, and reentry. Jones and Langan will share their experiences teaching artistic and creative classes in TRAC\, the impact on students who are incarcerated\, and connect their work to the On the Inside themes of identity\, self-empowerment\, and finding dignity while incarcerated through creative expression. SUMMARY:On the Inside Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On the Inside is a group show of LGBTQ+ artists who are currently incarcerated. The art is made from basic materials the prisoners have access to behind bars: mostly letter sized paper\, dull pencils\, ball-point pen ink tubes (the hard shell is deemed too dangerous)\, and unlikely innovations such as using an asthma inhaler with Kool-Aid to create an airbrushed painting. The exhibit will be on display in the Osborne Family Gallery during Criss Library’s regular hours of operation.

Learn about the civil rights origins of the department\, battles for legitimacy in the eyes of the university\, the role of the Omaha chapter of NAACP in the department’s survival\, and much more.
