DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nMark Sanders’ poetry explores the grit of the Great Plains with the tenderness of memory and the human heart. Join us for an evening of poems that reflect on home\, time\, and the ways we grow into our best selves. \nMark Sanders is a Nebraska native\, born in Creighton and raised on the eastern rim of the Sandhills at Ord. Among his books of poetry are The Suicide (1988)\, Before We Lost Our Ways (1996)\, Here in the Big Empty (2006)\, Conditions of Grace: New and Selected Poems (2011)\, Landscapes\, with Horses (2018)\, and In a Good Time (2019).  The latter two books received Nebraska Book Awards; Landscapes\, with Horses was awarded the 2019 Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.  His edited works include A Sandhills Reader: 30 Years of Great Writing from the Great Plains and The Weight of the Weather: Regarding the Poetry of Ted Kooser\, both recipients of the Nebraska Book Award\, in 2016 and 2018 respectively.  In 2007\, he was awarded the Mildred Bennett Award for fostering Nebraska’s literary heritage.  His most recent book is Homecoming Parade:  Memoir  (2024)\, and his next book of poems\, The Messiah Horse:  Poems…

DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nBreak from the expected and write toward the marvelous. Through surrealist poems and playful prompts\, this generative workshop helps poets tap the unconscious\, challenge repression\, and unlock bolder\, more imaginative work. \nKemi Alabi is the author of Against Heaven (Graywolf Press\, 2022)\, selected by Claudia Rankine as winner of the Academy of American Poets First Book Award. The collection was a Kate Tufts Discovery Award finalist\, Chicago Review of Books Award winner\, and one of New York Public Library’s Best Books of 2022\, among other honors. Alabi’s poems have appeared in The Atlantic\, The Nation\, Poetry\, Boston Review\, the Grammy-nominated album “Difficult Grace\,” and elsewhere. Alabi is co-editor of The Echoing Ida Collection (Feminist Press\, 2021)\, an anthology of Black reproductive justice writing. They’ve spent over a decade building narrative power for trans and queer bodily autonomy\, most recently as the 2024-2025 Feminist in Residence at Northwestern University. Alabi is currently the inaugural Beloit Poetry Journal Iron Mouth Curatorial Fellow. Born in Wisconsin on a Sunday in July\, they now live in Chicago\, IL.

Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nExplore how poetry can meet environmental crisis with attention\, grief\, desire\, and care. In this generative workshop\, participants will read contemporary ecopoets\, question the limits of language\, and write new work that reimagines responsibility beyond the self. \nH. G. Dierdorff is a poet from the scablands and pine savannas of eastern Washington\, the ancestral\, unceded land of the interior Salish people. She is the author of Rain\, Wind\, Thunder\, Fire\, Daughter\, which was published by the University of Nevada Press in 2024 and is a finalist for the 2026 Oregon Book Award. Their work has been awarded a Vermont Studio Center Fellowship and appeared in journals such as Cut Bank\, The Shore\, Arkansas International\, and Willow Springs. You can currently find them in Portland\, where they teach writing at Clackamas Community College and poetry through Literary Arts.

Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nFrom family and memory to the absurdities of daily life\, Greg Kosmicki’s poetry has been praised for its honesty and openness. His poetry balances humor\, sorrow\, and the mystery of being human. \nGreg Kosmicki has published eight chapbooks and seven full-length collections of poetry with ten different presses. His most recent collection\, The dog has no answers\, was published in September\, 2023\, by Main Street Rag Publishing Co. His 2016 collection\, It’s As Good Here as it Gets Anywhere\, from Logan House Press\, was a finalist for the 2017 High Plains Book Award. Individual poems of his have been published in Paris Review\, New Letters\, Nimrod\, Cimarron Review\, Kansas Quarterly\, Briar Cliff Review\, Laurel Review\, Poetry NOW\, and many others. His poems have been selected to be read on “Writer’s Almanac.” He has twice been awarded an Artist’s Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council for his poetry. In 1998\, he founded The Backwaters Press\, which published more than 100 books under his direction\, until it was given to the University of Nebraska Press in 2017 as an imprint of that press.

Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nKelly Madigan’s poetry explores the fragile line between memory and mystery\, reverence and inquiry—holding up what others might turn away from. \nKelly Madigan is a poet\, essayist and conservation advocate living in the Loess Hills of western Iowa. She previously resided in Nebraska for over 30 years. Her work has received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Distinguished Artist Award from the Nebraska Arts Council. In 2020\, Kelly walked the entire length of the Loess Hills in Iowa in an effort to understand her landscape on foot. In 2013\, she crossed the Nebraska panhandle on foot. Her books include The Edge of Known Things (SFASU Press) and Getting Sober (McGraw-Hill).

Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nParticipants will explore how poetry can respond to real events\, honor lived experience\, and give shape to what must be remembered. Writers will leave with new insight into documentary poetry and fresh material of their own. \nJoanne Godley is a thrice-nominated Pushcart and Best-of-Net poet\, writer\, and recent MFA graduate from Pacific University. She is a retired physician and public health specialist\, and lives in San Miguel de Allende\, Mexico. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Crab Orchard Review\, Decolonial Passage\, The Kenyon Review Online\, among others. She is an Anaphora Arts Fellow in poetry and fiction. How the Black Panthers Fell From the Sky\, is a memoir-in-verse and Godley’s first poetry collection. It won the Naomi Long Madgett award for 2025 and has just been published by Broadside Lotus Press.

Her poems explore desire\, conflict\, and beauty with an honesty that grips and doesn’t let go. \nKiara Nicole Letcher is the author of Oxblood\, (Agape Editions\, 2024) and the chapbook Scream Queen (Orchard Street Press\, 2019). Her work has appeared in South Dakota Review\, Green Mountains Review\, Plainsongs Magazine\, Solstice Literary Magazine\, Querencia Press\, Mulberry Literary and Laurel Review\, among other publications. She received her MFA from The University of Nebraska at Omaha and previously served as a Board Member for the Nebraska Writer’s Collective. She was the 2024 and 2025 Keynote Speaker for the Nebraska Scholastic Writing Awards and a Nebraska State Poet Nominee.

In this workshop\, participants will explore epistolary poems as a way to write through intimacy\, distance\, memory\, and contradiction\, and leave with fresh drafts and new ways of thinking about what poems can do. \nLisa Low is the author of Replica (University of Wisconsin Press\, 2026) and the chapbook Crown for the Girl Inside (YesYes Books\, 2023). She is the recipient of a 2023 Pushcart Prize and the 2020 Gulf Coast Nonfiction Prize\, and her poems have appeared in American Poetry Review\, Ecotone\, The Massachusetts Review\, Poetry\, The Southern Review\, and elsewhere. Originally from Maryland\, she lives in Chicago.
