SUMMARY:Welcoming New Nebraskans: A Celebration of  "The Lives of Immigrants & Refugees"
DESCRIPTION:This event at the Sheldon Museum of Art will feature moderated discussion with contributors and editors of “The Lives of Immigrants and Refugees: Tales of Migration\, Hope\, Grief and Finding Home in Nebraska\,” followed by audience discussion and questions. \nRegistration is requested to attend this event: https://sheldonartmuseum.org/welcoming-new-nebraskans-celebration-lives-immigrants-refugees/ \nAbout the book: \nHuman beings have always migrated. To be on the move\, searching for a more hospitable climate\, greater resources\, and a welcoming community\, is part of our human DNA. All kinds of large\, uncontrollable forces—war\, the threat of genocide\, climatic changes\, political exile\, and economic hardship—propel people to leave behind everything familiar and begin their lives over again in a strange place\, sometimes with only the clothes on their backs. \nThe Lives of Immigrants and Refugees offers thirty-one essays by immigrants and refugees who now call Lincoln\, Nebraska\, home. These individuals have found support\, belonging\, and opportunity through the collaborative work of Lincoln’s New Americans Task Force members and the Lincoln/Lancaster County Welcoming and Belonging Strategic Plan. The stories in this book are brilliant\, harrowing\, poetic\, and revelatory. They’re also stories of survival\, resilience\, creativity\, and a staggering amount of work: learning a new language\, navigating a challenging immigration system\, being perceived as a foreigner\, struggling to grasp strange new customs and traditions\, working one’s way out of extreme poverty\, working through trauma and grief. Those of us who have had the good fortune of not being displaced have much to learn by listening.

SUMMARY:The Composer's Mind: La Folia Global - Lincoln
DESCRIPTION:La Folia Global is a transcontinental musical journey that brings together Baroque repertoire and instruments with world music traditions whose roots intersect in the cultural crossroads of Renaissance Venice. At its center is Valeri Tolstov’s brilliant reimagining of Vivaldi’s La Folia\, moving seamlessly between Armenian folk music\, Hindustani classical raga\, and Vivaldi’s original score. \nStep behind the scenes of La Folia Global and explore how the project came to life\, the inspirations behind the music\, and the collaborative process that brings these artists together. Featuring composer Valeri Tolstov and Crossroads Artistic Director Erik Higgins and hosted by Nebraska Public Media’s own Genevieve Randall\, this event offers an in-depth look at the music and the creative minds behind it. \nThis conversation precedes a concert by La Folia Global in the same location at 7:30 p.m. \nTickets for both the conversation and concert are free and can be reserved online via the Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival website. \nThis event is part of the Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival\, which encompasses events in Lincoln and Omaha on July 19\, July 24 -August 2\, and August 5.
