DESCRIPTION:As part of the exhibit “MOTHER TIME: Measuring ourselves within the landscape”\, exhibiting artists Rachel Cox and Rose Marie Cromwell and author/curator Dr. Michelle Millar Fisher will participate in a panel discussion. The panelists will explore photography’s role in constructing personal and political memory\, focusing on motherhood in considering how images become repositories for emotion\, trauma\, and care across time. \nAdmission is free; ticket reservations are encouraged. Visit the event website for more information\, or to register. \nMOTHER TIME: Measuring ourselves within the landscape brings together photographers Rachel Cox and Rose Marie Cromwell\, whose distinct yet overlapping practices explore the complexities of closeness—emotional\, physical\, and spatial. \nRachel Cox is a contemporary artist working primarily in the disciplines of image-based media. Her work explores themes of reproduction\, mothering\, and personal autonomy through photography\, printmaking\, and historical analog processes. \nRose Marie Cromwell is a photographer and artist from Seattle\, based in Miami. \nDr. Michelle Millar Fisher is currently the Ronald C. and Anita L. Wornick Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts within the Contemporary Art Department at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. Her work focuses on the intersections of people\, power\, and the material world.

DESCRIPTION:Listen and learn from exhibiting artist Miatta Kawinzi and Haitian-American anthropologist Chrislyn Laurore\, who will focus on diasporic identity\, material memory\, and how storytelling can function as an embodied archive. Their dialogue will connect Kawinzi’s exploration of cultural lineage and ecological interdependence with broader questions of belonging and change within the African Diaspora. \nAdmission is free; RSVPs are encouraged. Visit the event page for more information\, or to RSVP. \nThis event relates to the exhibit Miatta Kawinzi: An Alphabet of Unfolding\, which explores hybridity\, memory\, and sustenance through mixed-media works\, sculpture\, video\, and text. \nMiatta Kawinzi is a multidisciplinary artist\, experimental filmmaker\, writer\, and educator. Her research-informed practice explores cultural hybridity\, memory\, freedom dreaming\, and ecologies of possibility within inner and outer landscapes. Her practice spans installation\, sculpture\, still and moving images\, sound\, painting\, and poetics. She is interested in illuminating African/Diasporic points of connection\, transformation\, and continuity across place\, space\, and time. Of Liberian and Kenyan heritage\, Kawinzi was raised in the US South and is based in NYC. \nChrislyn Laurie Laurore is a William Fontaine Fellow studying the public memory and history of slavery\, particularly its curation in museums\, monuments\, memorials\, and archaeological sites. She is interested in the biopolitical economy of African diaspora heritage tourism and its effects on contemporary Black identities and nationalisms.

SUMMARY:Gallery talk: Jaime Arredondo and the Popol Vuh
DESCRIPTION:Jaime Arredondo\, is an artist and illustrator for the exhibition “Popol Vuh: The Sacred Book of the Quiche Through Illustration”. With this art\, Jaime Arredondo hoped to restore the former glory of the Popol Vuh and its authors to its deserved place in human history. The artist’s hope is that the work will lead to a greater interest in and defense of the stories\, art\, and culture of Native and Indigenous people. \nJaime Arredondo was born in Dallas\, Texas to Mexican American Tejano parents. He earned a BA from University of Dallas\, Irving\, TX and a MFA in Painting from Yale University. After graduating from Yale University with a MFA in Painting\, he moved to New York City and began teaching his course “Of Fire and Blood: Art and Mythology of Mexico” at NYU\, and at The New School. He has had numerous solo gallery and museum shows in the Southwest and in New\nYork City and is the recipient of numerous awards. In 2009\, his paintings were published as stamps by the United Nations\, and in 2015 he was commissioned to create a permanent art project for the Manhattan Transit Authority\ncomprised of thirty-six mosaics of his works\, installed at the Zerega Station in the Bronx\, and entitled “Garden of Earthly Delight.” He currently lives in New York City with his wife and daughter.

DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the 69th Annual Willa Cather Spring Conference\, and is free and open to the public. \nThe Field\, The Fire is a solo exhibition to be held in conjunction with the 69th annual Willa Cather Spring Conference. The conference\, Cather and the Readerly Imagination\, will focus on Cather’s own books and reading habits\, as well as her attention to the content and appearance of the books she created. The ideas of Cather as both reader and writer and her books as both story and substance seem a natural fit with Hencey’s work. \nTravis Hencey was born and raised in Chadron\, Nebraska\, a small town in the northwestern panhandle of the state. Generally\, Travis’s work deals with themes of transience\, memory\, and family history in the Western Nebraska landscape with an eye toward materiality and mark-making.
