SUMMARY:Native American Film Series: One with the Whale
DESCRIPTION:In St. Lawrence\, Alaska\, a remote island in the Bering Sea where hunting whales is a matter of life and death\, a shy Native teen\, Chris Apassingok\, became the youngest person ever to harpoon a whale for his village. His family gets blindsided by thousands of keyboard activists brutally attacking him online—without fully understanding the importance of the hunt to his community’s survival. “One with the Whale” chronicles the obstacles Chris and his family face\, amidst larger currents of food security\, environmental racism\, climate change\, cultural genocide\, and social media. The livelihood of the Apassingoks and their village are threatened as they search for a balance between modernity and a traditional subsistence lifestyle. \nSponsored by Vision Maker Media. \nDetails: https://theross.org/film/nafs-one-with-the-whale/

SUMMARY:What If...? Entrepreneurship Panel - Verdigre
DESCRIPTION:What If…? Entrepreneurship Panel\nTuesday\, Nov. 10\n6:30-8:00 pm\nSponsor: Verdigre Public Library\nLocation: Verdigre Fire Hall\nModerated by Mike Tobias\, Nebraska Public Media\nContact: Katie Hollman\, Verdigre Public Library director – 402-668-2677\, verdigrelibrary@gmail.com \nThis event is part of the SPARK! Places of Innovation exhibition that will run from January 5 – February 13\, 2027\, at the Verdigre Public Library. \nThe story of human history is written in inventions and innovations. People are problem- solvers. Sometimes we invent. More often\, we innovate—we introduce a fresh idea or an invention into use in some way that creates a new way of doing or thinking. \nInvention can happen anywhere and it’s happening right now in small towns across America. Rural Americans are creating new products\, taking risks\, meeting challenges together\, and seizing upon exciting opportunities that change local life and sometimes reach far beyond. \nSpark! Places of Innovation is part of Museum on Main Street\, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and State Humanities Councils nationwide. It is based on an exhibition by the National Museum of American History. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.

SUMMARY:What If...? Entrepreneurship Panel - Broken Bow
DESCRIPTION:What If…? Entrepreneurship Panel\nWednesday\, Nov. 11\n6:30-7:30 pm\nModerated by Mike Tobias\, Nebraska Public Media\nCuster County Museum in Broken Bow\nContact: Tammy Hendrickson\, Custer County Historical Society/Museum and Research Center director – 308-870-0215\, cchs@live.com \nThis event is part of the SPARK! Places of Innovation exhibition\, which was in Broken Bow from June 13 – July 17\, 2026.

SUMMARY:They Rode the Orphan Trains: Franklin
DESCRIPTION:Novelist and humanities scholar Alison Moore and singer/songwriter Phil Lancaster have combined audio visual elements\, historical fiction and musical ballads into a collaborative performance that brings the Orphan Train movement\, a largely-unknown chapter in American history\, to public awareness. The presentation tells the story of the 250\,000 orphans and unwanted children who were put on trains in New York between 1854 and 1929 and sent all over the United States to be given away. After the presentation\, there is an informal discussion about the origin and demise of the largest child migration in history and the part it played in the formation of the American Dream. The human struggle to belong\, to define one’s self in the place we call home is exemplified in the stories of these children that have shaped all of our lives. The presenters will take questions from the audience and will invite relatives and acquaintances of Orphan Train Riders to share their stories. \nAlison Moore\, MFA\, is a former Assistant Professor of English/Creative Writing in the MFA Creative Writing Program at the University of Arizona and a current Humanities Scholar. She lives in Austin and has been touring nationally since 1998 with the multi-media program “Riders on the Orphan Train” that is currently the official outreach program for the National Orphan Train Complex Museum and Research Center. She has also developed public outreach programs for the Orphan Train Heritage Society of America\, Inc. and for ArtsReach\, a Native American literacy project in Southern Arizona. She is the author of four books. She received two National Endowment for the Arts Fiction Fellowships in 1993 and 2010 and the Katherine Ann Porter Prize for Fiction in 2004. In 2007/2008 she received the J. Frank Dobie Paisano fellowship from the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Institute of Letters. In 2012 she received the Charles Loring Brace Award for helping to preserve the stories of the Orphan Trains. \nPhil Lancaster was born in Texarkana\, Arkansas and studied art and music at L’Ecole De Beaux Arts in Angers\, France. He became a member of a bluegrass band that toured throughout France and produced an album entitled “Bluegrass Oldies Ltd./Traveling Show.” After returning to the U.S. he met three Arkansas musicians and the acoustic quartet “Still on the Hill” was formed in Fayetteville. They released their first CD in 1997\, the second in 2000. The group performed at national and international folk festivals. In 2007 he received an Arkansas Arts Council Fellowship in Music Composition. He is co-producer of the documentary film “Gospel\, Biscuits and Gravy” about Ozark gospel singer Ernestine Shepherd and presenter of “Riders on the Orphan Train\,” the official outreach program for the National Orphan Train Complex.

SUMMARY:Making Nebraska Home Author Panel at Nebraska Celebration of Books
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion featuring editors and essayists from The Lives of Immigrants and Refugees: Tales of Migration\, Hope\, Grief\, and Finding Home in Nebraska\, who explore migration\, identity\, memory\, and belonging through literature\, followed by audience dialogue about the role of storytelling in strengthening civic understanding and preserving community history. \nThe Lives of Immigrants and Refugees: Tales of Migration\, Hope\, Grief\, and Finding Home in Nebraska offers thirty-one essays by immigrants and refugees who now call Lincoln\, Nebraska\, home. These individuals have found support\, belonging\, and opportunity through the collaborative work of Lincoln’s New Americans Task Force members and the Lincoln/Lancaster County Welcoming and Belonging Strategic Plan. The stories in this book are brilliant\, harrowing\, poetic\, and revelatory. They’re also stories of survival\, resilience\, creativity\, and a staggering amount of work: learning a new language\, navigating a challenging immigration system\, being perceived as a foreigner\, struggling to grasp strange new customs and traditions\, working one’s way out of extreme poverty\, working through trauma and grief. Those of us who have had the good fortune of not being displaced have much to learn by listening. \nThis panel will feature essayists Eh Ta Taw\, Etza Wong\, Shahad Kheder\, Yazen Kheder\, and Sajia Qasemi \nThe Nebraska Celebration of Books (NCOB) is a free\, public literary festival honoring Nebraska authors\, readers\, and the statewide literary community. The event features author panels\, book award presentations\, vendor markets\, and programming for both authors and readers. \nFor more information and a schedule of events\, visit the NCOB website at bookfestival.nebraska.gov
