SUMMARY:Native American Film Series: Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild]
DESCRIPTION:Every second Monday evening of each month\, Vision Maker Media and The Ross Media Arts Center present free in-person public screenings that feature Native American films by and about Native Americans and Alaska Natives. The Native American Film Series showcases stories about cultural heritage\, art\, history\, music\, civic leadership\, youth\, and more. Q&A sessions enhance each screening. Please check The Ross website to confirm screening time. \nAanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild] \nIn the sterile archives of museums our ancestor’s remains struggle to find their way home. The film follows the eleven indigenous repatriation specialists that make up MACPRA (Michigan Anishinaabek Cultural Preservation & Repatriation Alliance). Through an essayistic approach the film takes a critical look at the reasoning that justified unearthing and collecting them in the first place\, and presents vérité portraits of the courageous individuals doing the hard and emotionally draining work of fighting for their return. \nThe June 8 screening will be followed by a discussion with Zack Khalil (Director/Producer/Cinematographer)\, Jacque Clark (Producer/Additional Cinematographer/Sound Recordist)\, and Samuli Haavisto (Cinematographer). Moderated by Shirley Sneve (ICT Newscast Senior Producer). \nShirley Sneve is the senior producer for the ICT Newscast\, a program of IndiJ Public Media. The weekly half-hour magazine show airs on 80 percent of PBS stations\, Australia\, Canada and several on-line streaming platforms\, including Free Speech TV. A member of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska\, Sneve is also affiliated with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. She directed Vision Maker Media from 2004-2019\, which is the largest US funder of Indigenous documentary film projects for public broadcasting. She lives in Lincoln\, Nebraska and serves on the boards of the Near South Neighborhood Association\, The Circle (Minneapolis\, MN) The Center for Rural Strategies (Whitesburg\, KY) and Arts Extension Institute (Amherst\, MA). \nZack Khalil\, a member of the Sault Ste Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians\, is a filmmaker and artist whose work centers Indigenous narratives in the present—and looks towards the future—through the use of innovative nonfiction forms. Khalil is a core contributor to New Red Order\, a public-secret society which calls attraction toward indigeneity into question\, yet promotes this desire\, and enjoins potential non-Indigenous accomplices to participate in the co-examination and expansion of Indigenous agency. Khalil is the co-director and co-editor of the feature documentary INAATE/SE/it shines a certain way. to a certain place/ it flies/falls/ which premiered as the closing night film of the Museum of Modern Art’s Doc Fortnight Film Festival\, and the experimental documentary short The Violence of a Civilization without Secrets (2017) which premiered at Sundance. Khalil also works professionally as a video editor\, most recently co-editing Alison O’Daniels feature film The Tuba Thieves (2023)\, which premiered at Sundance. Khalil’s own work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art\, Sundance Film Festival\, New York Film Festival\, CPH: DOX\, HKW\, Walker Arts Center\, Kunsthal Charlottenborg\, Creative Time\, Toronto Biennial 2019\, Whitney Biennial 2019\, 59th Venice Biennale\, Sharjah Biennial 15\, Counterpublic Triennial 2023\, among other institutions. Khalil is the recipient of various fellowships and grants\, including a Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship\, Sundance Art of Nonfiction\, and Gates Millennium Scholarship. \nJacque Clark\, a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians\, is a creative producer with a focus on film and music. Their work emphasizes the human search for meaning while exploring relationships with reality. With a background in mortuary science before choosing an artistic path\, Clark brings a unique perspective to the creative process\, viewing art as poetic science experiments for generating further conversations. Jacque Clark is based out of Minneapolis MN\, and also resides part time in Saint Ste. Marie MI. \nSamuli Haavisto is a Finnish American documentary cinematographer and commercial director. Samuli is a longtime contributor to works by Adam and Zack Khalil and New Red Order\, including The Violence of a Civilization without Secrets (2017\, Sundance Premiere)\, Give It Back: Crimes Against Realty (2024)\, and Aanikoobijigan [ancestor / great-grandparent / great-grandchild] (2025\, Sundance Premiere).

DESCRIPTION:The 29th Annual Buffalo Commons Storytelling and Music Festival is packed with opportunities to laugh\, have fun\, learn and remember. Journey through the dusty trails\, starlit nights\, and campfire tales of the American cowboy with nationally-renowned cowboy storytellers and musicians. Their gripping tales and raw\, authentic songs from the trail is the ultimate tribute to the Grit of the West. A guest visual artist will open your heart and stimulate your perceptions as you follow his life’s journey through his photography\, art and stories. A bus tour will take you to a site where ordinary Nebraskans had an extraordinary impact on history. Festival 2026 will be one to love\, from the Historic Fox Theatre stage show\, dinner cabaret\, historical tour and venues\, art shows\, museum melodies and memories\, open mic opportunities\, poetry sharing\, Kids Fest and more! \nEvents take place throughout McCook. For full details\, visit the festival website. \nFeatured Cowboy Storytellers\, Poets and Musicians: Andy Hedges and Dom Flemons \nDom Flemons is known as “The American Songster®” since his repertoire covers over one hundred years of American roots music. Flemons is a folk musician\, black country artist\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, music scholar\, historian\, actor\, slam poet\, record collector\, curator\, podcaster\, cultural commentator\, influencer\, and the creator\, host\, and producer of the American Songster Radio Show on WSM in Nashville\, TN. He is considered an expert player on the banjo\, guitar\, harmonica\, jug\, percussion\, quills\, fife and rhythm bones. \nSongster\, reciter\, storyteller\, guitarist\, and collector of cowboy songs and poems\, Andy Hedges fell in love with traditional music by listening to his father’s cassettes of cowboy songs. Andy’s vast and varied repertoire includes classic cowboy poetry recitations\, obscure cowboy songs\, dust bowl ballads\, and blues. He also hosts a podcast\, Cowboy Crossroads.  \nFeatured Artist: Wesaam Al-Badry \nAt the age of eleven\, artist and photographer Wesaam Al-Badry’s family fled his home country of Iraq at the onset of the Gulf War. Before relocating to Lincoln\, the family spent four years in a refugee camp in Saudi Arabia where he first experimented with a camera. Wesaam began documenting what was happening around him to help process his experiences. That experience has sculpted much of his work\, which focuses on capturing the human struggle. Believing that he could help others by telling their stories through his work encouraging them to see their beauty and begin a process of healing.

DESCRIPTION:Bone Creek Museum is partnering with the 4-H Extension Offices of Butler and Colfax counties to offer a photography workshop for students led by RJ Kern of Minnesota. Participants will build pinhole cameras and create original photographs in a darkroom setting. \n\n“Exploring Light\, Optics\, and Storytelling” invites learners to slow down\, observe carefully\, and rediscover the magic of early photography—when creating an image required curiosity\, patience\, and invention.\n\n\n\nParticipants will explore how a simple light-tight box with a tiny opening became the foundation of photography as we know it today. Along the way\, students will connect science\, creativity\, and personal storytelling through hands-on experiences with light\, exposure\, and image-making.\n\n\n\nMore than just a science activity\, this workshop highlights photography as a powerful form of human expression. Participants are encouraged to bring a personal photograph or small keepsake to incorporate meaning\, memory\, and storytelling into their work.\nThrough the slow and thoughtful process of working with light-sensitive materials\, students will discover how every photograph begins with attention\, creativity\, and connection. This unique experience blends art\, science\, history\, and reflection into an unforgettable hands-on learning opportunity.

SUMMARY:Sorting Out Race exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Every day thrift stores across America receive donations of objects that display racial imagery— antique advertising cards\, collectible salt-and-pepper shakers\, vintage children’s books\, and mugs with sports team mascots. Are these objects harmless reminders of historical attitudes or do they continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes about race? Should thrift stores sell these objects? Or should they be “sorted out” of the resale environment and discarded? \nSorting Out Race arose out of a desire to divert artifacts with racial content from thrift stores to an exhibit that would generate a healthy community conversation about racial stereotypes past and present in order to heighten awareness of our continuing struggles with race. \nExhibit courtesy of the Kaufmann Museum at Bethel College. \n\n\n\n\nMuseum hours: Monday – Wednesday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Thursday – Friday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.\, Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.\nRegular museum admission $9 for age 13 and up\, $8 for seniors 60+\, $7 children 3-12.
