SUMMARY:Not Too Far Distant - Arnold
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with educational events for local students and a Veteran’s Day program at 9:30 a.m. on November 11th\, the play “Not Too Far Distant” will be presented at 6 p.m. on November 10 at Arnold Public Schools\, with Blixt Foundation staff and local veterans hosting an open house prior to and following the Monday night performance. Local historical military memorabilia will also be on display during the two-day event. \n“It’s almost unbelievable that anyone could be hardened to the point of doing the brutal things they did. …” \nA young man from the Midwest is sent to war\, carrying with him the hopes of the free world. What Staff Sergeant Clarence Williams encounters there challenges and changes humanity forever. History touches the present when a new generation takes a journey through time to experience World War II alongside Clarence himself. Centered around his personal letters home\, we learn that sometimes what seems so far away is much closer than we think. Filled with hope and heart\, Not Too Far Distant honors the experience of the American soldier and reminds us that we all have the power — and the responsibility —  to help create a brighter future. \n

SUMMARY:Exploring Japanese History and Culture in Nebraska VETERANS HOME AUDIENCE ONLY
DESCRIPTION:Curated discussion on the play “Momotaro: The Peach Boy of Japan” with Courtney Cairncross led by Vickie Sakurada Schaepler. \nThis event is for an invited audience only. \nMomotaro is a beloved Japanese folktale about a boy who is miraculously born from a giant peach. An elderly\, childless couple discovers the peach floating down the river\, and when they try to eat it\, it splits open to reveal a baby boy inside. They name him Momotaro\, meaning “Peach Boy\,” and raise him as their own.  As he grows up\, Momotaro becomes strong and brave. When he learns about a band of ogres who are terrorizing nearby villages\, he sets out on a journey to defeat them. Along the way\, he befriends a dog\, a monkey\, and a pheasant by offering them delicious millet dumplings and they join him on his quest.  Together\, they travel to Oni Island\, work as a team to outsmart and defeat the ogres\, and return home victorious\, bringing back treasure and peace to the land.  The story is narrated in the traditional clown style by beloved Japanese figures\, with iconic tricksters bringing chaos and cleverness along the way.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Courtney LeBlanc
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nHow can pop culture provide new and inventive ways to write poems\, present complex truths\, and provide an avenue into our deepest emotions? In this generative workshop\, poet Courtney LeBlanc will provide examples that effectively\, and creatively\, weave pop culture into their poems. How does an American Girl doll represent your childhood? How does Nirvana or Taylor Swift inspire you? How does your favorite horror movie reflect your own truth or trauma? We’ll read poems together\, discuss them\, and then Courtney will provide prompts to write your own pop culture-inspired poems. \nCourtney LeBlanc is the author of the full-length collections Her Dark Everything; Her Whole Bright Life (winner of the Jack McCarthy Book Prize); Exquisite Bloody\, Beating Heart; and Beautiful & Full of Monsters. She is the Arlington County Poet Laureate and the founder and editor-in-chief of Riot in Your Throat\, an independent poetry press. She is also the founder of the Poetry Coven\, a monthly generative poetry workshop. She loves nail polish\, tattoos\, and a soy latte each morning.
