SUMMARY:Bison exhibit at University of Nebraska State Museum Morrill Hall
DESCRIPTION:BISON – a traveling exhibit exploring the past\, present\, and future of this great North American mammal – will be at the University of Nebraska State Museum Morrill Hall from November 8 through May 31. \nThe exhibit explores the significance of bison in the cultures of Plains Indian peoples–particularly as a resource for food\, clothing\, shelter and tools. That co-existence changed dramatically with the closing of the frontier that brought new settlers with livestock to compete for grass and water during a time of climate and habitat change. These developments were exacerbated by the commodification of the bison as hide and bone in late nineteenth century industrialization. The most recent chapter of the bison story is both significant and complex: the romance of rescuing and preserving bison; the science of genetic diversity within the species; the dynamics of poachers\, profiteers\, and producers both industrial and small-scale; marketing bison fiber and meat to the 21st century customer. The exhibit highlights the role of the National Buffalo Foundation in bringing together a community of stakeholders to celebrate and promote the bison’s heritage and to raise awareness of that story. \nThe museum is open Tuesday – Saturday 9:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm – 5:00pm\nMorrill Hall is closed on Mondays and select holidays (January 1\, July 4\, Thanksgiving Day\, December 24 & 25). \nMuseum admission: $13.00\, Children (ages 3-11) $7.50\, under 3 FREE\nMuseums for All (with SNAP\, EBT\, or WIC Card) $1.00\nMuseum Members\, UNL NCard Holders\, ASTC Members\, Blue Star (active-duty military\, guard\, reserves & families with ID) FREE\n*A $1 discount is available for Seniors (65+)\, or Active/Veteran Military (with ID) on regular admission

SUMMARY:Native American Film Series: FIRELIGHTERS: FIRE IS MEDICINE with Elizabeth Azzuz
DESCRIPTION:Every second Monday evening of each month\, Vision Maker Media and The Ross Media Arts Center present free in-person public screenings that feature Native American films by and about Native Americans and Alaska Natives. The Native American Film Series showcases stories about cultural heritage\, art\, history\, music\, civic leadership\, youth\, and more. FIRELIGHTERS: FIRE IS MEDICINE (2024) will be followed by a conversation with Elizabeth Azzuz\, who is the board secretary of the Cultural Fire Management Council \n\nFor centuries\, most landscapes in North America were shaped by fire between lightning strikes and Indigenous burns. Indigenous people had deep knowledge of the art of using fire\, and still do today. FIRELIGHTERS follows the work of women leaders from the Yurok and Karuk Tribes who are building resources to share indigenous practices and create policies to take back indigenous burning rights. (57 minutes) \nELIZABETH AZZUZ (Yurok/Karuk) grew up and lives in the traditional Yurok village of Weitchpec. She is a cultural practitioner\, gathering and propagating traditional food and medicine plants. She is the board secretary of the Cultural Fire Management Council\, responsible for logistics and permitting. She is an active community member.

SUMMARY:EnChanted Images: The Voice of Sainte-Foy at Conques
DESCRIPTION:Across nearly a thousand years\, the Romanesque church of Sainte-Foy of Conques in France calls us to a bygone era of faith and sound. Martyred at thirteen for refusing to renounce her beliefs\, Sainte-Foy defied Roman authority and died for her faith\, becoming one of medieval Europe’s most powerful saints. In the eleventh century\, monks transformed her shrine into a bustling pilgrimage site through architecture\, sculpture\, and music. This program presents medieval chants from Sainte-Foy’s Festal Liturgy—heard again for the first time in modern performance—accompanied by images of the golden statue that houses her relics. \nPre-Concert Talk and Documentary 6:00 PM\nConcert 7:00-8:00 PM\nQ&A with the Audience to Follow \nFree registration is required. Free parking in Lot E with reservation. Click here to register. \nFor more information\, visit the event website.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Tatiana Johnson-Boria
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nHow can we truly unearth the depths and sensations at the core of our memories to generate new poems? How can we talk about the unspeakable or the things that we have not quite been able to write into? This workshop will focus on working with writers to find different ways of excavating the self and leaning into the work that can come through this experience. We’ll also explore work by writers like Joy Harjo\, Aimee Nezhukumatathil\, Porsha Olaywiola\, and others. \nTatiana Johnson-Boria (she/her) is the author of Nocturne in Joy (2023)\, winner of the 2024 Julia Ward Howe Book Prize in Poetry. As an educator\, artist\, facilitator\, and mother; she uses her writing practice to dismantle racism\, reckon with trauma\, cultivate healing\, and to explore the complex magic of mothering. She has received fellowships and awards from Tin House\, the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, MacDowell\, the Brother Thomas Fellowship\, and St. Botolph Club Foundation\, among others. Tatiana is a 2017 Pushcart Prize nominee\, teaches at GrubStreet\, and has been on faculty at Emerson College\, among other institutions. Her work appears or is forthcoming in The Academy of American Poets\, Ploughshares\, Kenyon Review Online\, and more. SUMMARY:The People’s Recorder: A Virtual Discussion about the Federal Writers’ Project in Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:The People’s Recorder podcast launched to acclaim in 2024 and won a Silver Signal Award for History Podcasting and was nominated for an Ambie Award for Best Indie Podcast. This virtual event will build on the discussion started in the Nebraska-based episode\, “A Creative Incubator\,” further exploring the work and the literary and cultural legacy of the Writers’ Project in Nebraska. \nModerated by The People’s Recorder host Chris Haley\, the panel discussion will feature writer/co-producer David Taylor\, Marilyn Holt (author of Nebraska during the New Deal) and Stephen Cloyd\, who recently retired from the Lincoln City Libraries. The event will also feature University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor Timothy Schaffert\, who will discuss the Prairie Schooner’s Centennial\, and Lincoln City Libraries’ Deb Arenz\, who will speak about the collections at the Jane Pope Geske Heritage Room of Nebraska Authors. \nWatch live on The People’s Recorder YouTube Channel. \nPart of the WPA\, the Federal Writers’ Project provided work for unemployed writers\, editors\, and other white-collar workers during the height of the Great Depression. The Writers’ Project had a mandate to produce state and city travel guides\, and interview everyday citizens. It was perhaps the largest and most chaotic publishing venture in American history\, and yet it produced over 200 publications\, and its flagship travel guide series remains important for its firsthand views of life in America. The Nebraska guide was a notable success and state bestseller. \nThis moderated discussion with a panel of experts will focus on that guidebook and the work of the staff of the Nebraska Writers’ Project and how that speaks to Nebraskans today. It will focus on the varied experiences of three Nebraskans: Rudolph Umland\, a hardscrabble farmer turned editor\, Weldon Kees\, a hardware businessman’s son turned poet\, and Ruby Wilson\, a former nurse who found a passion in first-person history. The event will also shine a spotlight on University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor and founder of Prairie Schooner\, Lowry Wimberly\, whose influence was critical to the Project’s success. \nThis event is being produced in partnership with Lincoln City Libraries and Prairie Schooner with support from Humanities Nebraska.
