SUMMARY:Big Blue Reservation: Struggles and Hope of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe
DESCRIPTION:One hundred seventy years ago\, the Treaty of 1854 was passed by Congress\, authorizing the move of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe to the Big Blue Reservation in Gage County\, Nebraska. The Tribe watched as acre by acre of their land was sold off by the government and treaties were broken. In 1881\, the Tribe was moved from this reservation to Red Rock\, Oklahoma. \nThe Gage County Historical Society\, along with the Otoe-Missouria Tribe\, arranged a summer exhibit in 2024 to educate the public about this important part of American history. The Otoe-Missouria Tribe once called Southeast Nebraska home. Through the displacement of the people during the 1800s\, they lost sacred traditions. Big Blue Reservation: Struggles and Hope of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe includes their voices of how that loss affected them into the present. \nThe Tribe and the Society wanted this exhibit to travel to other institutions to provide a cultural history of Nebraska\, utilizing the Tribe’s perspective. As a result of this hard work\, the Gage County Historical Society’s traveling exhibit will open in the Great Plains Art Museum’s mezzanine gallery. This exhibit is on view in conjunction with Reflections of Our People\, Our Ways\, Our Land. \nThe Great Plains Art Museum is open Tuesday–Saturday\, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed major U.S. holidays\, University breaks\, and home football game Saturdays. Admission is free.

This exhibit shines a spotlight on an important collection through dresses and objects spanning the 1910s to the 2010s. They also tell another important story — the way the objects change over time and how the museum preserves them. \nThe Durham Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon – 4 p.m.\, with special extended hours in December – see museum website. SUMMARY:Bison exhibit at University of Nebraska State Museum Morrill Hall
DESCRIPTION:BISON – a traveling exhibit exploring the past\, present\, and future of this great North American mammal – will be at the University of Nebraska State Museum Morrill Hall from November 8 through May 31. \nThe exhibit explores the significance of bison in the cultures of Plains Indian peoples–particularly as a resource for food\, clothing\, shelter and tools. That co-existence changed dramatically with the closing of the frontier that brought new settlers with livestock to compete for grass and water during a time of climate and habitat change. These developments were exacerbated by the commodification of the bison as hide and bone in late nineteenth century industrialization. The most recent chapter of the bison story is both significant and complex: the romance of rescuing and preserving bison; the science of genetic diversity within the species; the dynamics of poachers\, profiteers\, and producers both industrial and small-scale; marketing bison fiber and meat to the 21st century customer. The exhibit highlights the role of the National Buffalo Foundation in bringing together a community of stakeholders to celebrate and promote the bison’s heritage and to raise awareness of that story. \nThe museum is open Tuesday – Saturday 9:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm – 5:00pm\nMorrill Hall is closed on Mondays and select holidays (January 1\, July 4\, Thanksgiving Day\, December 24 & 25). \nMuseum admission: $13.00\, Children (ages 3-11) $7.50\, under 3 FREE\nMuseums for All (with SNAP\, EBT\, or WIC Card) $1.00\nMuseum Members\, UNL NCard Holders\, ASTC Members\, Blue Star (active-duty military\, guard\, reserves & families with ID) FREE\n*A $1 discount is available for Seniors (65+)\, or Active/Veteran Military (with ID) on regular admission

Allison Adelle Hedge Coke teaches for UC Riverside\, and is the author/editor of 18 books\, including Look at This Blue\, Burn\, Streaming\, Blood Run\, Off-Season City Pipe\, Dog Road Woman\, The Year of the Rat\, Effigies I\, II\, & III\, Ahani\, and Sing.

Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \n“To believe you are magnificent. And gradually to discover that you are not magnificent. Enough labor for one human life.” —Czeslaw Milosz \nWith Milosz’s immortal wisdom as our lodestar\, we will take a tour through autobiographical poems ancient and modern\, studying the ways personal poems capture self and other\, place and purpose\, sound and sense\, framing the self as both mirror and window\, at once magnificent and minute. \nTodd Robinson affectionately known to acolytes as “Toddfather\,” is a poet and educator based in Omaha. He is the author of Mass for Shut-Ins (Backwaters Press\, 2018) and Note at Heart Rock (Main Street Rag Publishing\, 2012). His writing has appeared or is forthcoming in such epic venues as Prairie Schooner\, Flyway—Journal of Writing and Environment\, Kestrel\, North American Review\, Sugar House Review\, Cortland Review\, Natural Bridge\, Superstition Review\, Weber: The Contemporary West\, Chiron Review\, A Dozen Nothing\, and many others. Recipient of the 2011-2012 Thompson Learning Community’s Outstanding Faculty Award\, he has conducted writing workshops with The Seven Doctors Project\, The Naturalist School\, Nebraska Warrior Writers\, Nebraska Writers Collective\, and the CÚRAM center for research in medical devices. He is founder and host of the Kaneko Art Museum’s Bibliophilia reading series\, which is currently on a long pandemic pause.
