SUMMARY:Winchell Lecture: "Where Do Pandemics Come From?" with Monica Green
DESCRIPTION:On April 24th at 6:00PM in Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center rooms 201-209\, the Department of History will welcome Dr. Monica Green as this year’s Richard Dean Winchell Lecturer. Discover how pandemics truly begin—and why they thrive—by tracing their path from medieval plagues to modern outbreaks. In this talk\, Dr. Green will reveal how infectious diseases jump species barriers\, travel global networks\, and persist for centuries. Drawing on cutting-edge genetics and fresh insights into the Black Death\, she’ll show how history can guide us in confronting pandemics today—and preventing them tomorrow. \nFree registration is required \nDr. Monica H. Green is an award-winning historian specializing in the history of medicine and global health\, with a particular focus on the medieval period. Her pioneering work bridges the humanities and sciences\, integrating historical research with cutting-edge genetics to explore the origins and spread of pandemics\, including the Black Death. A Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America\, Dr. Green has published extensively on the history of disease\, women’s health\, and medical knowledge transmission across cultures. As an independent scholar\, she continues to shape global conversations on historical epidemiology and the interdisciplinary study of health.

SUMMARY:44th Annual Neihardt Spring Conference “Twilight of the Sioux: From the Indian Wars to Wounded Knee”
DESCRIPTION:The conference theme this year is inspired by the 100th anniversary of the publication of The Twilight of the Sioux. Published as a combination of the last two chapters (or songs) of John Neihardt’s book “A Cycle of the West\,” the book “Twilight of the Sioux” addresses the tragedy experienced by Plains Indians in the “Song of the Indian Wars” and “Song of the Messiah.” The former tells of the period of migration and the last great fight for the bison pastures between the invading white race and the Plains Indians (1854-1890)\, and the latter addresses the conquered people and the worldly end of their great dream\, closing with the battle of Wounded Knee (1890). The historical events that Neihardt wrote about changed the United States in innumerable and fundamental ways. Using his writing as the framework and centering Native American experts as speakers\, this conference will spark discussion by broadening perspectives and considering the long-term impact of how history is framed. \nTickets are required\, and the price ranges from $15-$35\, depending on student/member status and the inclusion of lunch. Click here for more information\, and to purchase tickets. \nTopics and speakers include: \nIncorporating and Engaging Native Histories on Public Lands\, Broc Anderson\, M.A.\, Director of Historic Sites for the Nebraska State Historical Society \nThe Act and Impact of Crazy Horse’s Death at Ft. Robinson\, Sandy Wounded Arrow\, M.A.\, Site Director\, Ft. Robinson Nebraska State Historic Site \nLakota Oral Tradition in “Black Elk Speaks\,” Delphine Red Shirt\, PhD\, Stanford University \n“The Oregon Trail” and Native Representation on the Plains\, Margaret Huettl\, PhD\, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh \nNAGPRA – Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act\, Calvin Harlan\, Acting Deputy Chief\, Omaha Tribe of Nebraska \nModerator: Nancy Gillis

SUMMARY:Vaquero: The Genesis of the Texas Cowboy
DESCRIPTION:“Vaquero” was created by the Wittliff Collections at the Alkek Library\, Texas State University-San Marcos\, presented in partnership with Humanities Texas. It features sixty-two digital carbon prints with bilingual narrative text that reveal the muscle\, sweat and drama that went into roping a calf in thick brush or breaking a wild horse in the saddle. The exhibit traces the long history of vaqueros\, or cowboys\, into the earliest phases of westward expansion onto this continent\, and the legacy of early cowboys in the development of western locales like central Nebraska. Paired with this traveling exhibit is a Buffalo County rodeo history display that keeps the equine theme alive. \nThe exhibit opens to the public at 5 p.m. on May 1 and runs through June 15. \nMuseum hours are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 – 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for the general public\, $5 for children 3-12\, and free for children 2 and under and for members.
