SUMMARY:Salon Reading Series: "Wasabia" @ Eastmont Living
DESCRIPTION:Each Salon Reading Series event features a reading of a play followed by a moderated discussion of the play’s themes and how these themes apply to the community. The theme for 2024-25 is “Hold On.” This theme will explore concepts of holding on and letting go. \nThe Salon Reading Series is free and open to the public\, with two readings each week: \n\nthe first on Sunday afternoon at 2pm in the Turbine Flats Resonator Gallery at 2124 Y St\nthe second Wednesday evening at 6:30pm  in the Eastmont Living’s theater space at 6315 O St in Lincoln.\n\nWasabia\nBy Wendy Herlich\nVivian\, staring down the barrel of dementia\, and Carla\, desperate to shine as a young hospice volunteer\, strike up an unlikely friendship\, which is thrown into question when Vivian enlists Carla’s help in getting life-ending drugs from a hapless musician. The drugs themselves are characters in this dark comedy\, which alternates between naturalism and the surreal as it explores one woman’s experience with medically assisted dying.

SUMMARY:The Culture\, Science and Future of Fire
DESCRIPTION:Ferin Davis Anderson will give a keynote talk for Wild Great Plains\, the Center for Great Plains Studies’ 50th annual conference. Anderson will discuss reciprocal restoration and examples of how stewarding a place can lead to cultural revitalization within a community in a talk titled: “How Reciprocal Restoration Fosters Cultural Revitalization.” \nThis talk is free and open to the public\, no conference ticket needed\, but registration is requested to determine seating needs. Please register here: https://forms.gle/DEnFB1uuih2L5HL49. All other conference speakers require a conference ticket. Parking is available in the lot north of Transformation Drive in Zone 9900 and is paid through the Passport Parking app\, details at: https://innovate.unl.edu/parking-nic \n“Reconnecting with traditional practices such as cultural burning is central in our connection with the land and lessening the impacts of devastating wildfires. Fire holds such power\,” Anderson says. “It is our duty to acknowledge fire and to foster a good relationship. As our ancestors understood\, the land will teach us.” \nAnderson is the co-author of “Wildfire: The Culture\, Science\, and Future of Fire\,” a STEAM book exploring the science of wildfires\, the history of fire in the United States\, and the relationship Indigenous people have with fire. Anderson is an enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa/Ojibwe/Anishinaabe/Mitchifs in North Dakota. She is also the Natural Resources Manager for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Land and Natural Resources Department. \nAnderson is responsible for stewarding and restoring natural areas for the SMSC. She works to weave Indigenous knowledge and western science to implement holistic land stewardship practices. This includes using fire as an ecological and cultural tool to achieve beneficial and healing outcomes. Witnessing Indigenous people revitalize and reconnect with this practice has been one of the greatest gifts of her career. Anderson was also part of a team that helped bring bison back to the SMSC – a relative that will help the community connect with the land and their culture. \nClick here for more information about the Wild Great Plains conference.

SUMMARY:Winchell Lecture: "Where Do Pandemics Come From?" with Monica Green
DESCRIPTION:On April 24th at 6:00PM in Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center rooms 201-209\, the Department of History will welcome Dr. Monica Green as this year’s Richard Dean Winchell Lecturer. Discover how pandemics truly begin—and why they thrive—by tracing their path from medieval plagues to modern outbreaks. In this talk\, Dr. Green will reveal how infectious diseases jump species barriers\, travel global networks\, and persist for centuries. Drawing on cutting-edge genetics and fresh insights into the Black Death\, she’ll show how history can guide us in confronting pandemics today—and preventing them tomorrow. \nFree registration is required \nDr. Monica H. Green is an award-winning historian specializing in the history of medicine and global health\, with a particular focus on the medieval period. Her pioneering work bridges the humanities and sciences\, integrating historical research with cutting-edge genetics to explore the origins and spread of pandemics\, including the Black Death. A Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America\, Dr. Green has published extensively on the history of disease\, women’s health\, and medical knowledge transmission across cultures. As an independent scholar\, she continues to shape global conversations on historical epidemiology and the interdisciplinary study of health.
