She will speak about the historical role of women\, their current challenges and their future involvement in agricultural sciences. \nThe exhibition\, “Legacy of Leadership: Faces of Nebraska Women in Agriculture\,” aims to highlight the vital role of women in Nebraska’s agricultural landscape with a collection of over 70 portraits captured at the 2024 Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference by renowned photographer John Noltner. Each portrait is accompanied by the subject’s short answer to the question\, “what has called you to this work?” \nMinnesota-based photographer John Noltner has produced projects for national magazines\, Fortune 500 companies\, and non-profit organizations. His multimedia arts project\, “A Peace of My Mind\,” uses portraits and personal stories to bridge divides and encourage dialogue around important issues. Through exhibits\, workshops\, lectures\, on-site studios\, and distance learning\, “A Peace of My Mind” leads transformative experiences that help a polarized world rediscover the common humanity that connects us. A gifted storyteller\, Noltner has worked on four continents\, gathering stories of human courage\, grace\, and resilience. “A Peace of My Mind” reflects his belief that art and storytelling can help individuals\, organizations and communities articulate their deepest values and encourage action toward building social capital and community connections.

DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nFebruary 6\, AA Monet\nAA Monet is a poet\, author\, book publisher\, editor\, and space creator for emotions to freely and safely exist. AA Monet’s poetry book\, Lost And Found\, can be found in local stores in the Omaha area. \nMarch 5\, Barbar Schmitz\nBarbar Schmitz taught writing and literature at Northeast College for 30 years; two of her books have won the Poetry Award from the Nebraska Center for the Book\, and she received an Individual Artist Award from the Nebraska Arts Council. \nApril 2\, Katie Schmid\nKatie Schmid is a National Endowment for the Arts fellow in creative writing for 2023 and an Assistant Professor of English at Ursinus College in PA with a debut book entitled “Nowhere.” \nMay 7\, J.V. Brummels\nJ.V. Brummels is a poet\, novelist\, short-story writer\, editor\, and rancher. His collection “Book of Grass” was awarded the 2008 Nebraska Book Award for Poetry. \nJune 4\, Veronica Torraca-Bragdon\nVeronica Torraca-Bragdon is a poet\, singer/songwriter\, and special educator\, with a degree in K-12 Vocal/Instrumental Education and a masters in Special Education from UNO whose poems have been set to music. \nJuly 2\, Bonnie Johnson-Bartee\nBonnie Johnson-Bartee teaches creative writing and literature at Wayne State College and Northeast Community College in Norfolk\, and her latest book\, “Cord Blood” won a 2023 Nebraska Book Award. \nAugust 6\, Hannah Wilkinson\nHannah Wilkinson has published two poetry collections: “Unto the Breach” and “Half Agony\, Half Hope.” \nSeptember 3\, Twyla Hansen\nTwyla Hansen is a HN Speaker’s Bureau member and the first female Nebraska State Poet from 2013 to 2018. \nOctober 1\, Jon Volkmer\nJon Volkmer is a professor of English and Director of Creative Writing at Ursinus College in PA who has published several books and a poetry collection. \nNovember 5\, Kassandra Montag\nKassandra Montag holds a master’s degree in English Literature and won an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council. \nDecember 3\, Julie S Paschold\nJulie S Paschold has published “Horizons” – a poetry collection honoring soil – and two of their chapbooks won honorable mention in Writer’s Digest contest. \n

SUMMARY:127 Years of Dracula from Myth to Movies and Much\, Much More
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with a stage production of “Dracula: the Journal of Jonathan Harker”\, Bluebarn Theatre is presenting a series of community engagement events with Dacre Stoker\, the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker and the international best-selling co-author of Dracula the Un-Dead (2009)\, and Dracul (2018). \nAll aboard for a fast-paced survey originating with actual vampire hysteria of the 1700’s in Europe through vampires in literature\, on stage\, movies\, television\, musicals\, opera\, and merchandise. \nDacre is also the co-editor of The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker: The Dublin Years (2012). He has published Stoker on Stoker Dracula Revealed (2022) a companion book to his informative audio visual presentations. In 2022 Dacre and Robert Eighteen Bisang published Dracula Annotated for the 125th Anniversary\, a culmination of years of research\, this version includes many of the passages edited out of the final Dracula typescript\, including the first three chapters and the original ending. DESCRIPTION:The College of Communication\, Fine Arts and Media in conjunction with the Institute for Holocaust Education\, B’nai B’rith Monsky Lodge\, and the UNO Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies\, present a screening of the documentary film “A Life Well Lived: An Account of David Kaufmann.” \nThe movie tells the remarkable true story of David Kauffmann\, a central Nebraska businessman\, community leader\, and philanthropist\, whose actions impacted countless lives. David Kauffmann emigrated from Germany and settled in Grand Island in 1903. His contributions to his adopted hometown of Grand Island and other communities he conducted business in\, including Kearney and North Platte\, were extensive. Kaufmann’s most significant and least known act of service was his quiet sponsorship of Jewish families fleeing the Nazi regime. \nFree admission\, no registration required.

The concert’s intention is to offer – via music and drama – a unique perspective of women’s personal histories and to explore the strength and endurance of women through the lens of family experiences. \nFour UNK students\, Sophie Fiedler\, Catherine Moritz\, Nicole Smith\, and TruLee Jo White\, will join five music professors\, mezzo-soprano Dr. Sharon Campbell (University of Nebraska at Kearney\, Kearney\, NE)\, pianist Dr. Young Kim (Skidmore College\, Saratoga Springs\, NY)\, soprano Dr. Suna Gunther (University of Nebraska at Lincoln\, Lincoln\, NE)\, soprano Dr. Anne Jennifer Nash (Concordia College\, Moorhead\, MN)\, and soprano Dr. Sylvia Stoner (Skidmore College\, Saratoga Springs\, NY)\, in a concert of micro-operas\, staged choral works\, and a piano solo that all draw from memoirs by women connected to the quintet and the composers. \nFive UNK Humanities and Social Science professors\, Dr. Janet Graham (English)\, Dr. Sandra Loughrin (Sociology/Women’s and Gender Studies)\, Dr. Suzanne Maughan Spencer (Sociology)\, Dr. Linda Van Ingen (History)\, and Dr. Theodora Ziolkowski (English) are contributing the insights of their research areas via a pre-rehearsal presentation and post-rehearsal discussion. \nThe dress rehearsal is free and open to the public\, as is the performance scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.

SUMMARY:Salon Reading Series: "Pivot" @ Eastmont Living
DESCRIPTION:Each Salon Reading Series event features a reading of a play followed by a moderated discussion of the play’s themes and how these themes apply to the community. The theme for 2024-25 is “Hold On.” This theme will explore concepts of holding on and letting go. \nThe Salon Reading Series is free and open to the public\, with two readings each week: \n\nthe first on Sunday afternoon at 2pm in the Turbine Flats Resonator Gallery at 2124 Y St\nthe second Wednesday evening at 6:30pm in the Eastmont Living’s theater space at 6315 O St in Lincoln.\n\nPivot\nby Alex Lubischer\nDirected by Jamie Bullins \nKara knows what she wants: a giant wedding reception\, a father-daughter dance to the Dixie Chicks\, and a solid three-year crop rotation plan for the farm. But when her wedding plans blow up in her face\, Kara is prepared to upend the entire town of Milton\, Nebraska\, to fight for the future that should have been hers.
