SUMMARY:Beyond Combat: World War I through the Lens of "Doc" Cook
DESCRIPTION:R.H. “Doc” Cook\, a photographer who enlisted during World War I\, served with the 88th Division\, 313th Engineers and captured the company’s experiences with his camera. A century later\, local resident Mollie Anderson purchased a case that had belonged to Cook. The case contained his original photographic negatives. After researching Cook’s life and displaying some of the images at Gallery 92 West in 2022\, she donated the entire set to The Durham Museum. \nBeyond Combat: World War I Through the Lens of Doc Cook is a temporary exhibition developed by The Durham Museum. Through photos curated from Cook’s collection\, it tells the story of the 313th Engineers from their training at Camp Dodge until the completion of their deployment in May 1919. Their story highlights military jobs that contributed to the war effort beyond the traditionally understood duties of combat. The military engineers that “Doc” served with were responsible for repairing roads\, building bridges\, laying track\, improving dugouts and shelters and assisting in the restoration of war-torn regions. Plans for the exhibition also include a small theater area\, with seating\, featuring additional images in which guests are invited to linger with “Doc” Cook’s images and immerse themselves in the 313th Engineers’ experience. \nAdmission (not including tax): Adults: $15\, Seniors (62+): $12\, Military/Veteran: $12\, Children (ages 3 – 12): $8\, Children 2 years and under FREE. \nMuseum hours: Sunday Noon – 4PM\, Monday through Saturday 10AM – 4PM\, closed major holidays.

SUMMARY:Not Too Far Distant - Valentine
DESCRIPTION:“It’s almost unbelievable that anyone could be hardened to the point of doing the brutal things they did. …” \nA young man from the Midwest is sent to war\, carrying with him the hopes of the free world. What Staff Sergeant Clarence Williams encounters there challenges and changes humanity forever. History touches the present when a new generation takes a journey through time to experience World War II alongside Clarence himself. \nCentered around his personal letters home\, we learn that sometimes what seems so far away is much closer than we think. Filled with hope and heart\, Not Too Far Distant honors the experience of the American soldier and reminds us that we all have the power — and the responsibility —  to help create a brighter future. \nFree will donation for admission.

SUMMARY:Not Too Far Distant - Fremont
DESCRIPTION:Not Too Far Distant tells the story of a young man from Nebraska who is sent to war\, carrying with him the hopes of the free world. What Staff Sergeant Clarence Williams encounters there challenges and changes humanity forever. History touches the present when a new generation takes a journey through time to experience World War II alongside Clarence himself. Centered around his personal letters home\, we learn that sometimes what seems so far away is much closer than we think. Filled with hope and heart\, Not Too Far Distant honors the experience of the American soldier and reminds us that we all have the power – and the responsibility – to help create a brighter future. \nTickets: Adults $15\, Students $5\, Veterans Free

SUMMARY:"One of Ours" lecture with Charles Johanningsmeir
DESCRIPTION:Before the ticketed reading of One of Ours at on November 17 at 7:30 p.m.\, noted Cather scholar Dr. Charles Johanningsmeir will present a free lecture about “One of Ours” in the Joslyn Castle Music Room. A long-time member of the Willa Cather Foundation Board of Governors\, he regularly offers a graduate seminar on Cather at UNO\, the highlight of which is an overnight trip to Cather’s hometown of Red Cloud to walk in her footsteps and thereby better understand her fictions.
