Experience the lively rhythm of Valencia’s Pasodoble and a stirring pop Latino musical medley. Feel the pulse of Spain through “Elementos”\, a classic Spanish performance using abanicos (fans)\, manton (shawl)\, and castañuelas (castanets). DESCRIPTION:The National Willa Cather Center is hosting an author series as a way to connect Cather to contemporary writers as well as provide an accessible and inclusive space where readers can talk directly with writers about their work. Participating authors discuss how they create their work\, thematic connections within and outside of their texts\, and and how our shared experiences inform the work. \nThis virtual event is free\, but registration is required. Click here for more information and to register. \nTracy Daugherty will discuss his book 148 Charles Street. This novel explores the friendship between Willa Cather and Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant. Two different writers with distinct styles. Cather was the novelist while Sergeant was the muckraking journalist. Their friendship becomes tested after Cather fictionalizes a war that Sergeant covered. This is a story of how friendship endures through disagreements and misunderstandings.

Scott Fitzgerald\, Viginia Woolf\, and Gertrude Stein. The evening includes performances throughout the historic Castle\, providing a fittingly dramatic background to iconic pieces including excerpts from “The Sun Also Rises\,” “Bernice Bobs Her Hair\,” and “A Room of One’s Own” among others. \n$25 tickets may be purchased online by visiting the Art & Literary Festival website and clicking on the performance date you wish to attend. Doors open at 7:00pm and a cash bar is available. Performances begin at 7:30pm. Space is limited. Masking is strongly encouraged. \nThis event is part of the 14th annual Art & Literary Festival presented by The Castle & Cathedral District and Metropolitan Community College. This year the festival honors Hemingway & the Lost Generation\, presenting dramatic excerpts from works by Earnest Hemingway\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Viginia Woolf\, and Gertrude Stein. For the first time ever\, the Art & Literary Festival is being presented district-wide across the newly-formed Castle & Cathedral District! New episodes air Thursdays at 8 p.m.\, repeating at 9 p.m. Mondays on Nebraska Public Media and at 8:30 a.m. Fridays on World\, and are also viewable online at https://nebraskastories.org/. \nThe Feb. 23 episode explores the Nebraska landscape moving through time and space by canoe\, train\, bike\, car and horse. Photographer Mike Forsberg and filmmaker Pete Stegen follow a mythical drop of water from the mountains to the plains\, a Union Pacific steam locomotive lets off some steam and Nacho Ride bikers peddle food and fun. Two other stories in the episode reveal Nebraska’s role in construction of the historic transcontinental Lincoln Highway and 4-H trail riders enjoying the scenic splendor of the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey.

Visit the Nebraska Writers Collective event website for more information and to register. \nSalome Agbaroji is the National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States 2023-2024\, making her the first African with this title. She is a Nigerian-American poet that has written and/or performed spoken word poetry for the Golden Globes Pre-Show\, NFL Rams Halftime Show\, an Opening Act on Rupi Kaur’s World Tour\, the likes of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti\, Black Lives Matter founder Patrisse Cullors\, Mrs. Tina Lawson\, and many more. \nThis year\, she will be an ambassador for Vans’ global brand campaign. Salome was a YoungArts winner in Spoken Word and has been honored by the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards\, among many others. She has been published in NPR’s KCRW\, Noema Magazine\, the Harvard Technology Review\, and more. \nEntering Harvard University studying Government and Political Science this fall\, her focuses outside of poetry are civic engagement and advocacy about issues such as racism towards minority communities\, immigrant stories\, injustices in the international community\, and more.

She is a Nigerian-American poet that has written and/or performed spoken word poetry for the Golden Globes Pre-Show\, NFL Rams Halftime Show\, an Opening Act on Rupi Kaur’s World Tour\, the likes of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti\, Black Lives Matter founder Patrisse Cullors\, Mrs. Tina Lawson\, and many more. \nThis year\, she will be an ambassador for Vans’ global brand campaign. Salome was a YoungArts winner in Spoken Word and has been honored by the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards\, among many others. She has been published in NPR’s KCRW\, Noema Magazine\, the Harvard Technology Review\, and more. \nEntering Harvard University studying Government and Political Science this fall\, her focuses outside of poetry are civic engagement and advocacy about issues such as racism towards minority communities\, immigrant stories\, injustices in the international community\, and more.

Those attending the evening’s ticketed theatrical performance are welcome to stay through the 7:30pm show time. \nOCT 15 –  “How to Tell a War Story: Hemingway and Cather in Conversation”  with Tracy Tucker of the Willa Cather Center\nOCT 19 – “The 1920s\, How It Ruined Poetry For The Rest Of Us” with Nebraska State Poet Matt Mason\nOCT 22 – “The 1920s\, How It Ruined Poetry For The Rest Of Us” with Nebraska State Poet Matt Mason \n“How to Tell a War Story: Hemingway and Cather in Conversation” Though Willa Cather and Ernest Hemingway share many early influences—a Great Plains upbringing\, early journalistic experience\, and widespread critical and public acclaim for their work—they didn’t know each other and often did not share artistic sensibilities. One of their most notorious “disagreements\,” if it can be deemed one when the two parties don’t speak to each other\, is over Cather’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel\, One of Ours. Hemingway didn’t like Cather’s depictions of war\, suggesting her inspiration came from movies. That may be a somewhat reductive opinion\, and we’ll explore both Cather’s real influences and examples from Hemingway’s most famous war stories\, as we discuss the ways Hemingway was both right and wrong in his assessment of Cather’s novel One of Ours. \n“The 1920s\, How It Ruined Poetry For The Rest Of Us” Many of us don’t like poetry these days. But over 100 years ago\, it was seen as a form of entertainment\, read for pleasure\, memorized for fun. But critics took over and narrowed what people saw as poetry\, leading to a downward spiral in the broader public’s interest in poetry. \nThis event is part of the 14th annual Art & Literary Festival presented by The Castle & Cathedral District and Metropolitan Community College. This year the festival honors Hemingway & the Lost Generation\, presenting dramatic excerpts from works by Earnest Hemingway\, F.
