SUMMARY:Inclusive Communities Table Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:With Table Talks\, Inclusive Communities offers everyone a space to build community through dialogue. The intent of Table Talks is to bring together community members and a panel of individuals who can offer their expertise or share their lived experiences to raise awareness and deepen understanding. \nOmaha Table Talk (OTT) was one of the first local human relations programs to provide facilitated and informally structured gatherings for people of different ethnicities and cultures throughout the community\, to engage in conversations about diversity and inclusion over dinner. OTT is the result of decades-long efforts by engaged community members to have real\, open dialogues about how various forms of identity impact the community and interactions with each other. The OTT series programming highlights themes and topics based on trending issues the community is facing. Each Table Talk program opens with a panel of speakers and is then broken into small group discussions led by trained facilitators\, who guide brave\, honest\, and open conversations. \nThis series is a National Endowment for the Humanities “United We Stand” event. All events are free and held in person at locations in Omaha\, and are also accessible online. ASL and Spanish-language interpretation are provided. Registration is required. Click the link in the event title for more information\, or to register. SUMMARY:"The Stories We Share" Poetry Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Behind every social injustice story lies the possibility for change. In an era of media over-saturation\, divisiveness\, and declining humaneness\, a well-told story has the power to inspire and induce action. But how do we write such testimonies? How do we activate a jaded public? \nFree poetry workshops at the Samuel Bak Museum and Learning Center will help to address these questions. After a tour of the Museum’s current exhibition Flight & Hope\, participants will discuss the themes presented and explore how they would present their own experiences of trauma\, displacement\, hope\, and/or survival. \nRegistration for these workshops is required\, and spots are limited. For more information\, and to register\, visit https://events.unomaha.edu/event/stores_we_share \nNov. 9\, 5:30 p.m. Dr. Todd Robinson will focus on elegy and survival. \nNov. 16\, 5:30 p.m. Ms. Sharmila Seyyid will focus on writing and reading for recovery. \nThe poetry workshop session on Nov. 30 with Dr. Lisa Fay Coutley will focus on trauma and healing in the context of domestic violence and is by invitation only through the WCA and UNO Gender and Sexuality Resource Center. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for the event\, please contact SBMLC at unobakinfo@unomaha.edu. . November 30 at 5:30 PM (limited to 20 participants).

SUMMARY:The Wise Men of Chelm
DESCRIPTION:The mythical comic town of Chelm is a beloved staple of Yiddish literature. Once upon a time\, an angel carrying a sackful of foolish souls back to heaven for repair snagged his sack on a tree growing on top a tall mountain top. The sack tore\, and the poor foolish souls rolled down the mountainside into the town of Chelm. \n“The Wise Men of Chelm”\, adapted by Sandra Fenichel Asher\, will be performed by a core of Circle Theatre artists. An opening act of “When Shlemiel Went to Warsaw”\, adapted by Jenni Castello\, will be read by residents from Quality Living Inc. Shtetl\, a form of Jewish dance\, will be choreographed into both productions. Prior to each performance\, scholar Barry Berko will talk about his research on Yiddish fiction writer Isaac Bashevis Singer. \nTickets for each of the two performances\, Nov 18 at 7:00pm and Nov 19 at 2:00pm\, are $20 and may be purchased at https://circletheatreomaha.org/mainstage-season/.

SUMMARY:Stories & Teachings of Traditional Plant Medicines
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of a series of hybrid lecture/workshops. Experts will present historical\, religio-cultural\, folkloric\, and geographical information in the first half of the event. Then\, additional information about the histories\, geographies\, and cultural relationships with specific plants will be discussed one by one as participants physically interact with that plant medicine and combine them to create blends of plant medicines that they can take home and study if they choose. Supplies will be available on a first come\, first served basis. For more information\, visit the Intertribal Medicine Collective Facebook page. \nNov 26 Indigenous Womb Medicine Traditions with Ziara Kyrie York \nZiara Kyrie York is a descendant of Muscogee/Creek and African Americans. She has studied culturally-rooted herbalist practices for five years. Her interest in Indigenous Medicinal practices led her to Native American and African American birth practices. She has studied these practices in the traditional manner\, as an observer and apprentice under internationally renowned and respected birth medicine-\, birth practice knowledge keepers\, and traditional midwives. Ziara has participated in numerous training and certification programs that have allowed her to blend Western medicine knowledge with a wide variety of Indigenous birthing practices. In all phases of her work she has looked to the ancestors\, the historical antecedents of her practices\, to inform her work. To her\, historical consideration is vital to contemporary birth practices. \nDec 3 Autumn Practices with Felecia Welke \nFelecia Welke is an enrolled citizen of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska with over a decade of experience studying traditional plant medicines and Indigenous healing modalities. She has studied and developed practices in birth work\, traditional medicine making\, traditional Indigenous craft practice\, Indigenous ceremonial practices\, and Indigenous food sovereignty movements. Her teachings are obtained through Indigenous pedagogical models from other Native American women across Turtle Island and globally. Felecia is a co-founder and co-organizer of the Intertribal Medicine Collective\, and regularly offers public educational programs to the southeastern\, Nebraska community\, with an emphasis on the local Black and Indigenous community.
