SUMMARY:An Evening with El Vaquero
DESCRIPTION:Meet El Vaquero\, America’s first cowboy\, as portrayed by Angel Vigil. A composite of many different historic figures\, El Vaquero is a Spanish colonial cowboy. These cowboys were the first Europeans to ride the open ranges and sleep under the stars. They learned to tame the wild horses of the plains and delivered vast herds of cattle across great distances\, mastering riding\, roping and other skills. \nAngel Vigil is a Colorado Heritage Artist storyteller.who is the author of six award-winning books on Hispanic and Western culture and arts. Vigil’s portrayal of El Vaquero will give color to the enduring American myth of a self-reliant cowboy riding tall in the saddle with an independent spirit representing all that is good in the American character.

SUMMARY:Women's Rights and the "Saucy" Mrs. Adams
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jessica Downing-Ford \nNorfolk Public Library Room A \nAbigail Adams \nFive years after Abigail Smith married John Adams\, the American colonies adopted the British law of coverture. This law held that no female person had a legal identity. At birth she was “covered” by her father’s identity and\, when she married\, by her husband’s. The husband and wife became one person: the husband. Married women owned nothing—not even the clothes on their backs. More importantly\, they had no rights over their own bodies\, or custody of the children they bore. Abigail and John’s marriage was based on mutual admiration and respect\, and Abigail understood how lucky she was. She witnessed families torn apart by husband’s drunkenness\, temper\, lack of employment and/or money mismanagement. Women in these unhappy unions were left to tolerate humiliation\, mistreatment\, and physical abuse along with their daily struggle to feed their families\, stay housed\, and stay safe. Abigail’s famous ‘remember the ladies’ letter to her husband in which she implores him to “not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands\,” speaks directly to the law of coverture. This was the women’s rights issue of her time—remnants of which still exist in the year 2022. \nJessica Downing-Ford \nJessica has always enjoyed being in the spotlight. While growing up in Braintree\, Massachusetts\, she enjoyed gymnastics\, dancing\, and acting. She attended Emerson College where she graduated in ’93 with a BFA in Dance. Jessica forgot her passion for performing and had large gaps between stage productions after becoming a mother. It was during a trip back to Massachusetts in 2014 that she caught a glimpse of her soon-to-be-heroine. She attended a reenactment of the signing of the Declaration at the Adams’ National Park on the 4th of July and was brought to tears by a reading of Abigail’s “Remember the Ladies” letter. She fell in love not only with Abigail but with the art of Chautauqua; she jokes that she’d been waiting her whole life to find an avenue for her talents. Jessica enjoys bringing Abigail to life for history classes in western Colorado as well as coaching students through the Young Chautauqua program with Colorado Humanities. She continues to research and visit Abigail’s historical sites as she deepens her understanding of this complex\, amazingly brave\, female patriot.

SUMMARY:David Kaufmann presentation
DESCRIPTION:Prior to the August 4 7 p.m. screening at the Grand Theater of “A Life Well Lived”\, a documentary film about David Kaufmann – a Grand Island businessman\, community Leader\, philanthropist and quiet hero – a presentation about his life will be presented at the Grand Island Public Library at 11 a.m. on August 3. \nDavid Kaufmann was a “quiet philanthropist” who did what he could\, from where he was\, to benefit others in his community and beyond. Although he was recognized in the Grand Island community for the work he did here\, he never sought recognition for himself. Kaufmann not only gave of himself; he inspired others to also do good where they could. Through his actions and words\, he made a difference in the lives of many people in the Grand Island community and beyond. \nThe greatest impact however was likely his least known role in sponsoring Jewish families who were fleeing from the horrors of the Nazi regime leading up to World War II. Kaufmann never spoke publicly about this important humanitarian work during his lifetime. However\, the families who were saved due to his actions taken in Grand Island\, Nebraska never forgot what he had done for them and the generations that followed.

SUMMARY:Black Homesteaders on the Great Plains: Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness -- Amber Kirkendall\, Homestead National Historical Park -- Room B/C
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Amber Kirkendall with Homestead National Historical Park \nLocation: Norfolk Public Library\, Room B/C \nThe call of free land offered Black Americans a welcome reprieve from a cycle of poverty driven by sharecropping and racialized violence in the South. The Homestead Act of 1862 helped at least 3400 Black farmers build homes across the Great Plains. Homesteading attracted groundbreaking independent Black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and agronomist and inventor George Washington Carver. Black homesteaders also founded intentional communities like Nicodemus\, Kansas\, where they built businesses\, schools and churches and held elected offices at the local and state level. Their perseverance and grit helped Nicodemus not only survive but later become a National Historic Site run by the National Park Service. \nAmber Kirkendall is the Park Ranger/Volunteer Coordinator at the National Park Service’s Homestead National Historical Park in Beatrice\, NE. In 2015\, Amber received an M.A. in historical studies from Nebraska Wesleyan University. In 2018\, Amber started as an intern at Homestead National Historical Park and has been there ever since. Amber is passionate about unearthing historical stories and connecting them to modern audiences.
