DESCRIPTION:As part of its Voices AMPLIFIED! series\, Omaha Performing Arts is presenting a hands-on origami program that blends history\, culture\, and art. Local origami artist Dr. Sharon Ishii-Jordan will take participants through the traditional practice of this delicate Japanese art form. \nTwo sessions will be offered\, one at 7:00 p.m. on January 22\, and one at 2:00 p.m. on January 25. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Across nearly a thousand years\, the Romanesque church of Sainte-Foy of Conques in France calls us to a bygone era of faith and sound. Martyred at thirteen for refusing to renounce her beliefs\, Sainte-Foy defied Roman authority and died for her faith\, becoming one of medieval Europe’s most powerful saints. In the eleventh century\, monks transformed her shrine into a bustling pilgrimage site through architecture\, sculpture\, and music. DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nHow can we truly unearth the depths and sensations at the core of our memories to generate new poems? How can we talk about the unspeakable or the things that we have not quite been able to write into? This workshop will focus on working with writers to find different ways of excavating the self and leaning into the work that can come through this experience. We’ll also explore work by writers like Joy Harjo\, Aimee Nezhukumatathil\, Porsha Olaywiola\, and others. \nTatiana Johnson-Boria (she/her) is the author of Nocturne in Joy (2023)\, winner of the 2024 Julia Ward Howe Book Prize in Poetry. As an educator\, artist\, facilitator\, and mother; she uses her writing practice to dismantle racism\, reckon with trauma\, cultivate healing\, and to explore the complex magic of mothering. She has received fellowships and awards from Tin House\, the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, MacDowell\, the Brother Thomas Fellowship\, and St. Botolph Club Foundation\, among others. Tatiana is a 2017 Pushcart Prize nominee\, teaches at GrubStreet\, and has been on faculty at Emerson College\, among other institutions. Her work appears or is forthcoming in The Academy of American Poets\, Ploughshares\, Kenyon Review Online\, and more. She is represented by Lauren Scovel at Laura Gross Literary.

SUMMARY:The People’s Recorder: A Virtual Discussion about the Federal Writers’ Project in Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:The People’s Recorder podcast launched to acclaim in 2024 and won a Silver Signal Award for History Podcasting and was nominated for an Ambie Award for Best Indie Podcast. This virtual event will build on the discussion started in the Nebraska-based episode\, “A Creative Incubator\,” further exploring the work and the literary and cultural legacy of the Writers’ Project in Nebraska. \nModerated by The People’s Recorder host Chris Haley\, the panel discussion will feature writer/co-producer David Taylor\, Marilyn Holt (author of Nebraska during the New Deal) and Stephen Cloyd\, who recently retired from the Lincoln City Libraries. The event will also feature University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor Timothy Schaffert\, who will discuss the Prairie Schooner’s Centennial\, and Lincoln City Libraries’ Deb Arenz\, who will speak about the collections at the Jane Pope Geske Heritage Room of Nebraska Authors. \nWatch live on The People’s Recorder YouTube Channel. \nPart of the WPA\, the Federal Writers’ Project provided work for unemployed writers\, editors\, and other white-collar workers during the height of the Great Depression. The Writers’ Project had a mandate to produce state and city travel guides\, and interview everyday citizens. It was perhaps the largest and most chaotic publishing venture in American history\, and yet it produced over 200 publications\, and its flagship travel guide series remains important for its firsthand views of life in America. The Nebraska guide was a notable success and state bestseller. \nThis moderated discussion with a panel of experts will focus on that guidebook and the work of the staff of the Nebraska Writers’ Project and how that speaks to Nebraskans today. It will focus on the varied experiences of three Nebraskans: Rudolph Umland\, a hardscrabble farmer turned editor\, Weldon Kees\, a hardware businessman’s son turned poet\, and Ruby Wilson\, a former nurse who found a passion in first-person history. The event will also shine a spotlight on University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor and founder of Prairie Schooner\, Lowry Wimberly\, whose influence was critical to the Project’s success. \nThis event is being produced in partnership with Lincoln City Libraries and Prairie Schooner with support from Humanities Nebraska.

She is a regular performer at regional and national storytelling festivals and conferences\, including the National Storytelling Festival\, Hawaii’s Talk Story Festival and the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. Lyn has also shared keynote presentations\, performances and workshops in Australia and Ireland\, and for the Transformative Language Arts Network’s and Ohio Literacy Resource Center’s annual conferences and events. Lyn is a two-time recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s ORACLE award\, receiving both its Leadership and Service and Circle of Excellence awards. Lyn is a member of the National Association of Black Storytellers Circle of Elders. Lyn’s first publications as an individual author are Affrilachian Tales and Beyond the Briar Patch. Both books are compilations of stories from Lyn’s childhood memories\, enriched with information on Affrilachian culture. She has written several other books alone and has been a co-author on other books. \nPaul Strickland is a professional storyteller and theatre artist from Kentucky. He has a large repertoire of unique family friendly stories\, including reupholstered folk tales\, fairytales for adults and future adults\, tall-tales and even historical stories that just happened to have never happened. Paul was a Teller-in-Residence at the International Storytelling Center in 2024. He was a Featured Teller: New Voice at the National Storytelling Festival in September of 2023. He was a Featured Teller at Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in September 2023\, Cave Run Storytelling Festival in 2022 and many other major storytelling festivals. In November of 2018 he made his NYC stage debut Off-Broadway at the SoHo Playhouse with his shadow and flashlight ghost story play\, “13 Dead Dream of Eugene.” Always adapting to whatever audience is in front of him\, Paul loves telling stories in every imaginable environment\, from comedy clubs to elementary and middle schools\, corporate events and even two prisons – where he was NOT an inmate at the time. Collections of his stories have won “Best of Fest” honors more than 18 times at Fringe Theatre Festivals in the US and Canada. Selections from his comedy performance “Levels of Difficulty” are still played nearly every day on Sirius XM radio.

DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nMaria Nazos grew up in Athens\, Greece\, and Joliet\, Illinois. Her work has been published in The New Yorker\, TriQuarterly\, World Literature Today\, and elsewhere. She’s the author of the poetry collection PULSE (Omnidawn\, 2026) and the translation collection The Slow Horizon that Breathes (World Poetry Books\, 2023) from the poet Dimitra Kotoula\, longlisted for the Anglo-Hellenic League Runciman Award. Maria has worked almost every job\, including as a whale watch boat attendant\, table dancer\, teacher\, barista\, sunglass salesperson\, bartender\, and probably the worst waitress in the entire history of the Eastern seaboard. Lyn is a two-time recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s ORACLE award\, receiving both its Leadership and Service and Circle of Excellence awards. Lyn is a member of the National Association of Black Storytellers Circle of Elders. Lyn’s first publications as an individual author are Affrilachian Tales and Beyond the Briar Patch. Both books are compilations of stories from Lyn’s childhood memories\, enriched with information on Affrilachian culture. She has written several other books alone and has been a co-author on other books. \nPaul Strickland is a professional storyteller and theatre artist from Kentucky. He has a large repertoire of unique family friendly stories\, including reupholstered folk tales\, fairytales for adults and future adults\, tall-tales and even historical stories that just happened to have never happened. Paul was a Teller-in-Residence at the International Storytelling Center in 2024. He was a Featured Teller: New Voice at the National Storytelling Festival in September of 2023. He was a Featured Teller at Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in September 2023\, Cave Run Storytelling Festival in 2022 and many other major storytelling festivals. In November of 2018 he made his NYC stage debut Off-Broadway at the SoHo Playhouse with his shadow and flashlight ghost story play\, “13 Dead Dream of Eugene.” Always adapting to whatever audience is in front of him\, Paul loves telling stories in every imaginable environment\, from comedy clubs to elementary and middle schools\, corporate events and even two prisons – where he was NOT an inmate at the time. Collections of his stories have won “Best of Fest” honors more than 18 times at Fringe Theatre Festivals in the US and Canada. Selections from his comedy performance “Levels of Difficulty” are still played nearly every day on Sirius XM radio.

SUMMARY:Americans and the Holocaust Traveling Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, D.C.\, will be at the Calvin T. Ryan Library on the University of Nebraska Kearney campus from February 5 – March 19 during library hours. \nThe exhibit addresses important themes in American history\, including Americans’ responses to refugees\, war and genocide in the 1930s and ‘40s. This exhibition will challenge the commonly held assumptions that Americans knew little and did nothing about the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews as the Holocaust unfolded. Drawing on a remarkable collection of primary sources from the 1930s and ‘40s\, the exhibition focuses on the stories of individuals and groups of Americans who took action in response to Nazism. It will challenge visitors to consider the responsibilities and obstacles faced by individuals—from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to ordinary Americans—who made difficult choices\, sought to effect change\, and\, in a few cases\, took significant risks to help victims of Nazism even as rescue never became a government priority. The exhibit hopes to challenge people to not only ask “what would I have done?” but also\, “what will I do?” \nLibrary hours are Monday – Thursday 7:30 a.m. – midnight\, Friday 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, Saturday 1-5 p.m.\, Sunday 1 p.m. – midnight (closed March 14-15) \nFor more information about events related to the exhibit\, visit the exhibit website.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Aly Acevedo
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nDesire is one of the oldest subjects of human art\, not just romantic desire but the deep longing to be seen\, understood\, and connected. In this workshop\, we’ll explore how poetry gives voice to that yearning and how language becomes a bridge between isolation and intimacy. Through discussion and guided writing\, participants will consider what it means to reach for another person\, to be known\, and to find meaning through connection. \nAly Acevedo is a Puerto Rican and Vietnamese poet\, educator and speaker living in the Kansas City area. Her debut collection\, My Dear Cult Leader (Button Poetry\, 2026)\, examines the long shadows of a toxic relationship and the aftermath of sexual assault\, weaving personal history with persona poems that explore power\, trauma and reclamation. Her writing has been featured in Frontier Poetry\, TRASH MAG\, Ink and Marrow\, Anti-Heroin Chic and elsewhere. She lives with her husband\, two cats and dog.

SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Negro Motorist Green Book offers an immersive look at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America\, and how the annual guide served as an indispensable resource for the nation’s rising African American middle class. The exhibition includes artifacts such as historic footage\, images and firsthand accounts to convey not only the apprehension felt by African American travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation and elegance of people fighting to live a full American existence. It will bring focus to a vibrant parallel world of African American businesses\, the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States and the important role The Green Book played in facilitating the second wave of the Great Migration. \nThe Green Book was published and distributed nationwide from 1936 until 1967\, providing African American travelers with information on restaurants\, gas stations\, department stores and other businesses that welcomed Black travelers. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” The Green Book offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nMuseum hours: Sunday\, Noon – 4PM; Tuesday-Saturday; 10AM-4PM; closed Mondays. \nAdmission free for members\, $15 for adults\, with discounts for seniors\, military members and veterans\, and children. \n
