SUMMARY:Running Towards the Fire - screening and panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:The documentary film “Running Towards the Fire” – about World War II war correspondents\, including one from Nebraska – will premiere at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center\, followed by a panel discussion featuring: \ndirector/producer Barney McCoy (Gilbert and Martha Hitchcock professor of journalism at UNL)\,\nassistant professor of practice and documentary videographer Kristian Anderson\,\naward-winning filmmaker and project consultant Christine Lesiak\, and\nproject consultant\, author\, military historian and senior archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration Mitch Yockelson. \nVisit The Ross website to RSVP for tickets. \n“Running Towards the Fire – A War Correspondents Story” will also make its debut statewide broadcast on Nebraska Public Media on these dates and times: Thursday\, May 23 at 8p.m. central time and rebroadcasts on Sunday\, May 26 at 5 p.m. and Tuesday\, May 28 at 8 p.m. \nRUNNING TOWARDS THE FIRE vividly captures the pivotal roles war correspondents played during the Allies 1944 D-Day invasion of Europe and subsequent defeat of Nazi Germany and the Axis powers in 1945. The war correspondents were unsung heroes who risked their lives informing the world with firsthand accounts of the bravery and sacrifice of the American and Allied forces who fought the Nazis. \nThe documentary draws extensively from the previously unpublished memoirs of Robert Reuben. The Omaha-born war correspondent parachuted into Normandy\, France\, hours before the D-Day invasion and was the first journalist on the ground. Reuben chronicled the Allies’ liberation of France and Belgium and fierce fighting in Germany that forced the Nazi’s May 7\, 1945\, surrender. \nRUNNING TOWARDS THE FIRE also pays tribute to the courage and resilience of the men and women who fought tyranny in WWII. Through newspaper articles\, radio broadcasts and film reports\, war correspondents like Reuben boosted the morale of soldiers and civilians by highlighting the sacrifices they made in the pursuit of freedom.

SUMMARY:Angels Theatre Company Salon Reading Series @ Turbine Flats: 1000 Miles
DESCRIPTION:Each Salon Reading Series event features a reading of a play followed by a moderated discussion of the play’s themes and how these themes apply to the community. The theme for 2023-24 is “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” This theme will explore concepts and idea of home\, and what it means to leave home\, by choice or by necessity; and the impacts of that decision on the persons involved. \nThe Salon Reading Series is free and open to the public\, with two readings each week: \n\nthe first on Sunday afternoon at 2pm in the Turbine Flats Resonator Gallery at 2124 Y St\nthe second Thursday evening at 6:30pm  in the Eastmont Living’s theater space at 6315 O St in Lincoln.\n\n1000 Miles by Vanessa Garcia\nSolis just arrived in The City from 1000 Miles Across the Sea. She’s searching for family\, for a way to carve out a new life. But The City is changing\, and the very skills Solis brings with her can either save or destroy this new place she’s beginning to call home. 1000 Miles is a play about what it means to migrate to a new place. It’s a play about survival\, surveillance\, nationalism\, and the nature of opportunity. About the walls that block our path and the new doors we try to open to save ourselves and those we love. \nFor more information\, including a PDF of the event program\, visit the Angels Theatre Company Salon Reading Series website.
