SUMMARY:Eleanor Reeds: Using "You" in Poems
DESCRIPTION:Poems often address those who cannot be reached. We appeal to the west wind or reproach an absent lover\, knowing it is impossible for them to hear us and yet trusting in the power of poetic language to communicate. In this session\, we will explore poems that can be read by everyone except the “you” to whom they are addressed. We will then experiment with using techniques such as invocation and apostrophe in our own poems. \nEleanor Reeds (she/her) is a poet\, essayist\, critic\, and educator from the United Kingdom who has served as the Associate Editor for Plainsongs for the past five years. Her work has appeared in aurora journal and Long River Review. She received a PhD in English from the University of Connecticut and currently teaches at Hastings College. \nRegistration is required via the Nebraska Poetry Society website. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership.

SUMMARY:Crane River Theater “Pretty Fire” Touring Production (students only)
DESCRIPTION:Crane River Theater Company will tour a performance of “Pretty Fire” to high schools across Nebraska. Each performance will be followed by a talkback discussion with the actor and director about the themes and topics of the production. \n“Pretty Fire” is a one-woman show by Charlayne Woodard\, set in the 1950s and 60s in the American south. This award-winning play addresses topics like race\, diversity\, and the civil rights movement\, but the entire play is told through the eyes of a child with stories about her family. The actress will portray more than 20 characters\, bringing these stories to life. It’s a unique way for students to connect to that period of history\, in a way that isn’t often presented. \nMonday\, April 15\, 6:45pm – Arapahoe High School\nThursday\, April 18\, 10:00am – Elwood High School\nWednesday\, April 24\, 1:00pm – Schuyler High School\nFriday\, April 26\, 12:45pm – Crete High School\nMonday\, April 29\, 2:00pm – McCook High School\nMonday\, April 30\, 1:00pm – Kearney High School

SUMMARY:Inclusive Communities Table Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:With Table Talks\, Inclusive Communities offers everyone a space to build community through dialogue. The intent of Table Talks is to bring together community members and a panel of individuals who can offer their expertise or share their lived experiences to raise awareness and deepen understanding. \nOmaha Table Talk (OTT) was one of the first local human relations programs to provide facilitated and informally structured gatherings for people of different ethnicities and cultures throughout the community\, to engage in conversations about diversity and inclusion over dinner. OTT is the result of decades-long efforts by engaged community members to have real\, open dialogues about how various forms of identity impact the community and interactions with each other. The OTT series programming highlights themes and topics based on trending issues the community is facing. Each Table Talk program opens with a panel of speakers and is then broken into small group discussions led by trained facilitators\, who guide brave\, honest\, and open conversations. \nThis series is a National Endowment for the Humanities “United We Stand” event. All events are free and held in person at locations in Omaha\, and are also accessible online. ASL and Spanish-language interpretation are provided. Registration is required.
