SUMMARY:Author Series and Book Signing: Gail Shaffer Blankenau
DESCRIPTION:The National Willa Cather Center is hosting an author series as a way to connect Cather to contemporary writers as well as provide an accessible and inclusive space where readers can talk directly with writers about their work. Participating authors discuss how they create their work\, thematic connections within and outside of their texts\, and and how our shared experiences inform the work. \nThis free in-person author event is part of a National Nebraska Day event. Click here for more information and for a recommended registration link. \nObserve National Nebraska Day by learning more about the complex history of the state’s south central region. Author and historian Gail Shaffer Blankenau will join us for a talk and signing of her new book\, Journey to Freedom: Uncovering the Grayson Sisters’ Escape from Nebraska Territory\, at the Red Cloud Opera House auditorium at 1:00 p.m. central time. Blankenau’s book tells the story of Celia and Eliza Grayson\, two enslaved sisters who escaped from their enslaver Stephen F. Nuckolls in 1858. \nAccording to the University of Nebraska Press\, “Gail Shaffer Blankenau provides the first detailed history of Black enslavement in Nebraska Territory and the escape of these two enslaved Black women from Nebraska City. Drawing on multiple collections\, records\, and slave narratives\, Journey to Freedom sheds light on the Graysons’ courage and agency as they became high-profile figures in the national debate between proslavery and antislavery factions in the antebellum period.”

SUMMARY:The Men\, Women and Children at Fort Atkinson\, 1820-1827
DESCRIPTION:Fort Atkinson\, active from 1820-1827\, was a military fort built to protect the fur trade on the Missouri River. While researching the documents relevant to this fort\, a story emerged about the people who lived there. While some people were famous\, others played a smaller part in the fort’s history. The presentation will also touch on the research process. \nSusan Juza\, a retired history teacher\, began working part-time at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park north of Omaha\, in 1995. Her passion for research helped to locate records at the National Archives and many different historical societies. These records have helped us understand the life at the old military fort. \nThis program is part of an ongoing speaker series highlighting the rich history of Nebraska and Fontenelle Forest. \nAdmission is free for Fontenelle Forest members; regular admission applies for non-members ($15 adults\, $13 seniors\, $9 children). For more information\, visit the event page.

SUMMARY:Self-Love Medicine
DESCRIPTION:This program is part of on-going educational series on Indigenous traditional medicine practices on the Great Plains presented by the Intertribal Medicine Collective. Foci are healing traditions\, traditional ecological knowledge\, & cultural preservation efforts by today’s Indigenous Peoples. \n\nIn this teaching\, Ziara Kyrie York will walk participants through a brief history of Native America\, and relearn acts of radical self-love\, agency\, and healing through the reclamation of culture and tradition.\n\n\nZiara Kyrie York is a descendant of Muscogee/Creek and Black Americans. She has studied culturally-rooted herbalist practices for five years. Her interest in Indigenous Medicinal practices led her to Native American and African American birth practices. She has studied these practices in the traditional manner\, as observer and apprentice under internationally renowned and respected birth medicine-\, birth practice knowledge keepers\, and traditional midwives. Ziara has participated in numerous training and certification programs that have allowed her to blend Western medicine knowledge with a wide variety of Indigenous birthing practices. In all phases of her work she has looked to the ancestors\, the historical antecedents of her practices\, to inform her work.
