SUMMARY:Caleb "The Negro Artist" Rainey: Using Spoken Word Techniques
DESCRIPTION:When a poet steps to the microphone\, truth on the tip of their tongue and vulnerability in their voice\, you listen. But what writing techniques does a performance poet use to hook their audience? From the syntax of the first line\, to the structure of the whole poem\, spoken word artists have found multiple ways to keep the audience’s attention. You may be a master at creating images\, a poet that can capture passion and pain\, even a talented storyteller\, but if you cannot hook your audience they won’t stick around long enough for you to prove it. This workshop\, designed for novice and experienced poets\, will focus on the hook by examining the spoken word artists that have found a way—in just a minute—to capture the attention of millions of viewers online. The artists include names such as Neil Hilborn\, Javon Johnson\, Sabrina Benaim\, Blythe Bard\, and many others. \nCaleb “The Negro Artist” Rainey is an author\, performer\, and producer. His debut book\, “Look\, Black Boy\,” was awarded first prize in the North Street Book Prize\, and his second book\, “Heart Notes” was published in 2019. He released two spoken word albums\, a studio version of Look\, Black Boy\, and a performance album titled\, Heart Notes Live! For three years in a row he was named Best Poet/Spoken Word Performer in Cedar Rapids & Iowa City. He is the winner of several slams across the United States\, has shared the stage with spoken word titans such as Siaara Freeman\, Javon Johnson\, Ebony Stewart\, Anthony McPherson\, and Patricia Smith. Videos of his performances can be found on his YouTube channel\, Write About Now\, and Button Poetry. When he is not writing and performing he is actively curating a community of spoken word poets in Iowa City through his high school program\, IC Speaks\, and producing events like the Mic Check Poetry Fest. \nRegistration is required via the Nebraska Poetry Society website. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership.

SUMMARY:Kelcey Ervick book reading "The Keeper"
DESCRIPTION:Kelcey Ervick\, author of the graphic memoir “The Keeper: Soccer\, Me\, and the Law that Changed Women’s Lives” will give a book reading as part of a series of events organized through UNO. \nKelcey Ervick is the author and illustrator of the graphic memoir\, The Keeper: Soccer\, Me\, and the Law That Changed Women’s Lives\, winner of a 2023 Ohioana Book Award. Her three previous award-winning books of fiction and nonfiction are The Bitter Life of Božena Němcová\, Liliane’s Balcony\, and For Sale By Owner. She is co-editor\, with Tom Hart\, of The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Graphic Literature. Kelcey’s stories\, essays\, and comics have appeared in The Rumpus\, The Believer\, Washington Post\, Lit Hub\, and elsewhere. She has received grants from the Indiana Arts Commission\, the Sustainable Arts Foundation\, and New Frontiers in Arts and Humanities at Indiana University. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati and is a professor of English and creative writing at Indiana University South Bend. \nThe Keeper: Soccer\, Me\, and the Law that Changed Women’s Lives\nGrowing up playing on a top national soccer team in the 1980s\, Kelcey Ervick and her teammates didn’t understand the change they represented. Title IX was enacted in 1972 with little fanfare\, but to seismic effect; between then and now\, girls’ participation in organized sports has exploded more than 1\,000 percent. Braiding together personal narrative\, pop culture\, literature\, and history\, Ervick tells the story of how her adolescence was shaped by this boom. Ervick also explores her role as a goalkeeper—a position marked by outsider status and observation—and reveals it has drawn some of the most famed writers of our time. With wit and poignant storytelling\, The Keeper brings to life forgotten figures who understood the importance of athletics to help women step into their confidence and power—and push for equality. Full of 1980s nostalgia and heart\, The Keeper is a celebration of how far we have come and a reminder of how far we have to go.

SUMMARY:Inclusive Communities Table Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:With Table Talks\, Inclusive Communities offers everyone a space to build community through dialogue. The intent of Table Talks is to bring together community members and a panel of individuals who can offer their expertise or share their lived experiences to raise awareness and deepen understanding. \nOmaha Table Talk (OTT) was one of the first local human relations programs to provide facilitated and informally structured gatherings for people of different ethnicities and cultures throughout the community\, to engage in conversations about diversity and inclusion over dinner. OTT is the result of decades-long efforts by engaged community members to have real\, open dialogues about how various forms of identity impact the community and interactions with each other. The OTT series programming highlights themes and topics based on trending issues the community is facing. Each Table Talk program opens with a panel of speakers and is then broken into small group discussions led by trained facilitators\, who guide brave\, honest\, and open conversations. \nThis series is a National Endowment for the Humanities “United We Stand” event. All events are free and held in person at locations in Omaha\, and are also accessible online. ASL and Spanish-language interpretation are provided. Registration is required. Click the link in the event title for more information\, or to register.
