SUMMARY:Perspective of the Fur Trade from the Iowa Tribe
DESCRIPTION:Lance Foster – Tribal Vice Chairman\, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer\, and member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska – will share the history of the fur trade from the perspective of the Iowa tribe. \nThe fur trade was a time of exchange\, usually thought of as the simple trade of furs for other items. However\, the exchange of language\, culture\, and economic favors that came with these trades has written a history that is more nuanced than people may understand. Come connect with the history of the land we live on\, the people who have walked here before us\, and the people who keep this history alive. \nThis program is part of an ongoing speaker series highlighting the rich history of Nebraska and Fontenelle Forest. \nAdmission is free for Fontenelle Forest members; regular admission applies for non-members ($15 adults\, $13 seniors\, $9 children). For more information\, visit the event page.

SUMMARY:Angels Theatre Company Salon Reading Series @ Eastmont: The Gentle Life-Changing Magic of Burning it All Down to the Ground
DESCRIPTION:Each Salon Reading Series event features a reading of a play followed by a moderated discussion of the play’s themes and how these themes apply to the community. The theme for 2023-24 is “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” This theme will explore concepts and idea of home\, and what it means to leave home\, by choice or by necessity; and the impacts of that decision on the persons involved. \nThe Salon Reading Series is free and open to the public\, with two readings each week: \n\nthe first on Sunday afternoon at 2pm in the Turbine Flats Resonator Gallery at 2124 Y St\nthe second Thursday evening at 6:30pm  in the Eastmont Living’s theater space at 6315 O St in Lincoln.\n\nThe Gentle Life-Changing Magic Of Burning It All Down To The Ground by Heather A Beasley\nAfter her father’s death\, a game developer sells her parents’ house\, against the wishes of her hoarder mother. Now the house must be empty in thirty days. It’s a massive mess\, and they’ll try any method that might help. Friendly bets? Therapy? Sparking joy? Decluttering detox? They’re all fair game…and both women are playing to win. A wry dramedy about the things we carry with us and the memories we can’t live without. \nFor more information\, including a PDF of the event program\, visit the Angels Theatre Company Salon Reading Series website.

SUMMARY:Caleb "The Negro Artist" Rainey: Using Spoken Word Techniques
DESCRIPTION:When a poet steps to the microphone\, truth on the tip of their tongue and vulnerability in their voice\, you listen. But what writing techniques does a performance poet use to hook their audience? From the syntax of the first line\, to the structure of the whole poem\, spoken word artists have found multiple ways to keep the audience’s attention. You may be a master at creating images\, a poet that can capture passion and pain\, even a talented storyteller\, but if you cannot hook your audience they won’t stick around long enough for you to prove it. This workshop\, designed for novice and experienced poets\, will focus on the hook by examining the spoken word artists that have found a way—in just a minute—to capture the attention of millions of viewers online. The artists include names such as Neil Hilborn\, Javon Johnson\, Sabrina Benaim\, Blythe Bard\, and many others. \nCaleb “The Negro Artist” Rainey is an author\, performer\, and producer. His debut book\, “Look\, Black Boy\,” was awarded first prize in the North Street Book Prize\, and his second book\, “Heart Notes” was published in 2019. He released two spoken word albums\, a studio version of Look\, Black Boy\, and a performance album titled\, Heart Notes Live! For three years in a row he was named Best Poet/Spoken Word Performer in Cedar Rapids & Iowa City. He is the winner of several slams across the United States\, has shared the stage with spoken word titans such as Siaara Freeman\, Javon Johnson\, Ebony Stewart\, Anthony McPherson\, and Patricia Smith. Videos of his performances can be found on his YouTube channel\, Write About Now\, and Button Poetry. When he is not writing and performing he is actively curating a community of spoken word poets in Iowa City through his high school program\, IC Speaks\, and producing events like the Mic Check Poetry Fest. \nRegistration is required via the Nebraska Poetry Society website. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership.
