SUMMARY:Inclusive Communities Table Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:With Table Talks\, Inclusive Communities offers everyone a space to build community through dialogue. The intent of Table Talks is to bring together community members and a panel of individuals who can offer their expertise or share their lived experiences to raise awareness and deepen understanding. \nOmaha Table Talk (OTT) was one of the first local human relations programs to provide facilitated and informally structured gatherings for people of different ethnicities and cultures throughout the community\, to engage in conversations about diversity and inclusion over dinner. OTT is the result of decades-long efforts by engaged community members to have real\, open dialogues about how various forms of identity impact the community and interactions with each other. The OTT series programming highlights themes and topics based on trending issues the community is facing. Each Table Talk program opens with a panel of speakers and is then broken into small group discussions led by trained facilitators\, who guide brave\, honest\, and open conversations. \nThis series is a National Endowment for the Humanities “United We Stand” event. All events are free and held in person at locations in Omaha\, and are also accessible online. ASL and Spanish-language interpretation are provided. Registration is required. Click the link in the event title for more information\, or to register. SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society: Tyler Michael Jacobs\, A Nature Poem is an Elegy
DESCRIPTION:To write a nature a poem is to grieve nature. We already have poems that capture the beauty of nature and how it once was. The importance of capturing nature today is to see it as it is and how it might one day be. Naturally\, we must move away from the traditional pastoral that romanticizes nature to some perversion of it as only we can experience\, feel\, and understand. In this workshop\, we will explore the contemporary pastoral from contemporary writers to see how the past and the present blend so well that it captures\, possibly\, a bleakness moving forward into some stark future only we can imagine. At the end of the workshop\, we will meditate on our own relationship with nature as we’ve moved through time. We will sit and write from an imagined future that pulls from our current experiences. Then\, we’ll share our work. We’ll end the workshop with some time for questions. \nTYLER MICHAEL JACOBS is the author of “Building Brownville” (Stephen F. Austin State University Press\, 2022). His words have appeared in Variant Literature\, Plainsongs\, Pidgeonholes\, Sierra Nevada Review\, Thin Air Magazine\, White Wall Review\, Funicular Magazine\, and elsewhere. His poems have also been featured on Nebraska Public Media’s Friday LIVE! He is a second-year poetry MFA candidate at Bowling Green State University where he serves as an assistant editor and Blog Co-Editor for Mid-American Review. \nRegistration is required via the Nebraska Poetry Society website. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership.

SUMMARY:Perspective of the Fur Trade from the Iowa Tribe
DESCRIPTION:Lance Foster – Tribal Vice Chairman\, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer\, and member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska – will share the history of the fur trade from the perspective of the Iowa tribe. \nThe fur trade was a time of exchange\, usually thought of as the simple trade of furs for other items. However\, the exchange of language\, culture\, and economic favors that came with these trades has written a history that is more nuanced than people may understand. Come connect with the history of the land we live on\, the people who have walked here before us\, and the people who keep this history alive. \nThis program is part of an ongoing speaker series highlighting the rich history of Nebraska and Fontenelle Forest. \nAdmission is free for Fontenelle Forest members; regular admission applies for non-members ($15 adults\, $13 seniors\, $9 children). For more information\, visit the event page.
