SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Lisa Fay Coutley
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nOctober 26\, Lisa Fay Coutley “Infecting the Text: Letting Trauma Take its Necessary Shape” By now you’ve heard writers—especially poets and lyric essayists—suggest that you should let your content inform your form as often as you’ve heard them say show don’t tell\, though as it is with most things\, both are easier said than done. The former requires us to write from the body while letting go—a feat not easily mastered by any writer and complicated even more by difficult content. Often what we need most is permission and imaginative examples. This workshop will provide you with both. \nLISA FAY COUTLEY is the author of HOST (Wisconsin Poetry Series\, 2024)\, tether (Black Lawrence Press\, 2020)\, Errata (Southern Illinois University\, 2015)\, winner of the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Open Competition\, In the Carnival of Breathing (BLP\, 2011)\, winner of the Black River Chapbook Competition\, Small Girl: Micromemoirs (Harbor Editions\, 2024)\, and she is the editor of In the Tempered Dark: Contemporary Poets Transcending Elegy (BLP\, 2023).

SUMMARY:Not Too Far Distant - Red Cloud
DESCRIPTION:“It’s almost unbelievable that anyone could be hardened to the point of doing the brutal things they did. …” \nA young man from the Midwest is sent to war\, carrying with him the hopes of the free world. What Staff Sergeant Clarence Williams encounters there challenges and changes humanity forever. History touches the present when a new generation takes a journey through time to experience World War II alongside Clarence himself. \nCentered around his personal letters home\, we learn that sometimes what seems so far away is much closer than we think. Filled with hope and heart\, Not Too Far Distant honors the experience of the American soldier and reminds us that we all have the power — and the responsibility —  to help create a brighter future. \nTickets in advance $25. Students through grade 12 free with purchase of adult ticket. Veterans free with reservation. Tickets $30 at the door.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Erica Reid
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nNovember 2\, Erica Reid “Glorious Dailiness” As poet Mary Ruefle says\, “I did not always know authors were ordinary people living ordinary lives.” What do we lose when we fail to celebrate — or worse\, ignore! — the wondrous details of ordinary life? This generative workshop makes space for that celebration through conversation\, example poems\, and dedicated writing time with prompts to help capture the details of our own glorious dailiness. \nERICA REID’s debut collection “Ghost Man on Second” won the 2023 Donald Justice Poetry Prize and was published by Autumn House Press earlier this year. Erica’s poems appear in Rattle\, Cherry Tree\, Colorado Review\, and more.

SUMMARY:Beyond Combat: World War I through the Lens of "Doc" Cook
DESCRIPTION:R.H. “Doc” Cook\, a photographer who enlisted during World War I\, served with the 88th Division\, 313th Engineers and captured the company’s experiences with his camera. A century later\, local resident Mollie Anderson purchased a case that had belonged to Cook. The case contained his original photographic negatives. After researching Cook’s life and displaying some of the images at Gallery 92 West in 2022\, she donated the entire set to The Durham Museum. \nBeyond Combat: World War I Through the Lens of Doc Cook is a temporary exhibition developed by The Durham Museum. Through photos curated from Cook’s collection\, it tells the story of the 313th Engineers from their training at Camp Dodge until the completion of their deployment in May 1919. Their story highlights military jobs that contributed to the war effort beyond the traditionally understood duties of combat. The military engineers that “Doc” served with were responsible for repairing roads\, building bridges\, laying track\, improving dugouts and shelters and assisting in the restoration of war-torn regions. Plans for the exhibition also include a small theater area\, with seating\, featuring additional images in which guests are invited to linger with “Doc” Cook’s images and immerse themselves in the 313th Engineers’ experience. \nAdmission (not including tax): Adults: $15\, Seniors (62+): $12\, Military/Veteran: $12\, Children (ages 3 – 12): $8\, Children 2 years and under FREE. \nMuseum hours: Sunday Noon – 4PM\, Monday through Saturday 10AM – 4PM\, closed major holidays.

SUMMARY:Not Too Far Distant - Valentine
\nFree will donation for admission.
