DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with a stage production of “Dracula: the Journal of Jonathan Harker”\, Bluebarn Theatre is presenting a series of community engagement events with Dacre Stoker\, the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker and the international best-selling co-author of Dracula the Un-Dead (2009)\, and Dracul (2018). \nAll aboard for a fast-paced survey originating with actual vampire hysteria of the 1700’s in Europe through vampires in literature\, on stage\, movies\, television\, musicals\, opera\, and merchandise. \nDacre is also the co-editor of The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker: The Dublin Years (2012). He has published Stoker on Stoker Dracula Revealed (2022) a companion book to his informative audio visual presentations. In 2022 Dacre and Robert Eighteen Bisang published Dracula Annotated for the 125th Anniversary\, a culmination of years of research\, this version includes many of the passages edited out of the final Dracula typescript\, including the first three chapters and the original ending. DESCRIPTION:The College of Communication\, Fine Arts and Media in conjunction with the Institute for Holocaust Education\, B’nai B’rith Monsky Lodge\, and the UNO Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies\, present a screening of the documentary film “A Life Well Lived: An Account of David Kaufmann.” \nThe movie tells the remarkable true story of David Kauffmann\, a central Nebraska businessman\, community leader\, and philanthropist\, whose actions impacted countless lives. David Kauffmann emigrated from Germany and settled in Grand Island in 1903. His contributions to his adopted hometown of Grand Island and other communities he conducted business in\, including Kearney and North Platte\, were extensive. Kaufmann’s most significant and least known act of service was his quiet sponsorship of Jewish families fleeing the Nazi regime. \nFree admission\, no registration required.

DESCRIPTION:The SALT Quintet will share the multifaceted process of transforming personal narrative into musical drama during an upcoming concert and dress rehearsal at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. An acronym for share\, affirm\, lift and tell\, the SALT Quintet tells stories through the medium of micro-operas. The concert’s intention is to offer – via music and drama – a unique perspective of women’s personal histories and to explore the strength and endurance of women through the lens of family experiences. \nFour UNK students\, Sophie Fiedler\, Catherine Moritz\, Nicole Smith\, and TruLee Jo White\, will join five music professors\, mezzo-soprano Dr. Sharon Campbell (University of Nebraska at Kearney\, Kearney\, NE)\, pianist Dr. Young Kim (Skidmore College\, Saratoga Springs\, NY)\, soprano Dr. Suna Gunther (University of Nebraska at Lincoln\, Lincoln\, NE)\, soprano Dr. Anne Jennifer Nash (Concordia College\, Moorhead\, MN)\, and soprano Dr. Sylvia Stoner (Skidmore College\, Saratoga Springs\, NY)\, in a concert of micro-operas\, staged choral works\, and a piano solo that all draw from memoirs by women connected to the quintet and the composers. \nFive UNK Humanities and Social Science professors\, Dr. Janet Graham (English)\, Dr. Sandra Loughrin (Sociology/Women’s and Gender Studies)\, Dr. Suzanne Maughan Spencer (Sociology)\, Dr. Linda Van Ingen (History)\, and Dr. Theodora Ziolkowski (English) are contributing the insights of their research areas via a pre-rehearsal presentation and post-rehearsal discussion. \nThe dress rehearsal is free and open to the public\, as is the performance scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.

DESCRIPTION:This free lecture by Jeremi Suri\, from the University of Texas-Austin\, will provide a thought-provoking presentation related to “A House Divided” and the legacy of the Civil War. This event is presented in partnership with Sheldon Museum of Art and is connected to the world-premiere production of the play “A House Divided.” Suri is the author and editor of 11 books on contemporary politics and foreign policy\, most recently “Civil War By Other Means: America’s Long and Unfinished Fight for Democracy.” He also hosts the weekly “This is Democracy” podcast\, which illuminates ways in which the past offers hope for the present and the future\, if only we can escape the negativity of our current moment. Suri will share insights from his scholarship on the Civil War\, including historical divisions in the U.S. and connections to current affairs. \nA free ticket is required to attend this event in the Ethel S. Abott Auditorium at Sheldon Museum of Art on the UNL campus.
