SUMMARY:Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies (1971-2021) Traveling Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies is an 8-panel traveling exhibit sharing historical snapshots of one of the oldest Black Studies departments in the nation. The exhibit highlights the department’s civil rights origins\, attempts to downgrade the department to a program\, and the mutual engagement between campus and community. The banners share archival materials such as newspaper clippings\, department documents\, and photos chronicling events from the 1969 campus sit-in to the celebration of the “Omaha 54” student activists 52 years later. The history of the Department of Black Studies has been characterized by a constant struggle for survival\, but also by the enduring engagement and support of the Omaha Black community.

SUMMARY:Reckoning and Reconciliation Summer Study and Discussion Circle - virtual
DESCRIPTION:Many people who attended the Reckoning and Reconciliation on the Great Plains Summit from April 6-8 have expressed a desire to further explore the issues that emerged and to continue the conversations about how we can promote healing and reconciliation. \nTo help facilitate further discussion\, the Center for Great Plains Studies is sponsoring a Summer Study and Discussion Circle. We will be listening to Walter Echo-Hawk’s keynote presentation from April 6 and reading his book\, In the Light of Justice: The Rise of Human Rights in Native America and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Then we will hold several online gatherings to discuss Mr. Echo-Hawk’s ideas and how to apply them in our own communities\, organizations\, and institutions. Margaret Jacobs\, director of the Center for Great Plains Studies and a professor of History will facilitate the Circle. Indigenous activists\, leaders\, legal experts\, and writers will join each of the sessions. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:"On the Inside" reception
DESCRIPTION:On the Inside is a group show of LGBTQ+ artists who are currently incarcerated. The art is made from basic materials the prisoners have access to behind bars: mostly letter sized paper\, dull pencils\, ball-point pen ink tubes (the hard shell is deemed too dangerous)\, and unlikely innovations such as using an asthma inhaler with Kool-Aid to create an airbrushed painting. \nThe exhibit is the culmination of a multi-year project conceived of by Tatiana von Furstenberg in collaboration with Black & Pink. The project started with a small ad in the Black & Pink newsletter\, a monthly publication filled with prisoner-generated content\, sharing stories about prison life. Ignited and inspired by this call for art\, more than four thousand pieces were submitted.
