SUMMARY:Visualizing Survivance\, Visualizing Permanence art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Drawn from Sheldon’s collection\, this exhibition centers artwork by Native American artists and photographs that demonstrate the everlasting presence of Native American communities. These works illustrate the spirit of visual sovereignty\, a term used to describe contemporary Native American art that prioritizes the perspective of Native American artists and reclaims physical and cultural space. \nVisualizing Survivance\, Visualizing Permanence was organized by Angel M. Hinzo (Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska)\, assistant professor of history and ethnic studies at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. \nFamily-friendly events associated with the exhibition include traditional Native American dancing and a panel discussion on April 5 and activities and games on April 6. \nAdmission is free. Museum hours: Tuesday–Wednesday 10 AM–5 PM; Thursday 10 AM–7 PM; Friday–Saturday 10 AM–5 PM; Sunday 12 PM–5 PM; Monday Closed. See the museum website for information about parking and accessibility.

SUMMARY:Vaquero: The Genesis of the Texas Cowboy
DESCRIPTION:“Vaquero” was created by the Wittliff Collections at the Alkek Library\, Texas State University-San Marcos\, presented in partnership with Humanities Texas. It features sixty-two digital carbon prints with bilingual narrative text that reveal the muscle\, sweat and drama that went into roping a calf in thick brush or breaking a wild horse in the saddle. The exhibit traces the long history of vaqueros\, or cowboys\, into the earliest phases of westward expansion onto this continent\, and the legacy of early cowboys in the development of western locales like central Nebraska. Paired with this traveling exhibit is a Buffalo County rodeo history display that keeps the equine theme alive. \nThe exhibit opens to the public at 5 p.m. on May 1 and runs through June 15. \nMuseum hours are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 – 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for the general public\, $5 for children 3-12\, and free for children 2 and under and for members.

SUMMARY:24-25 Poetry & Music Project Concert
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 8th year\, the Poetry & Music Project connects student poets and their words with composers to create original music and explore the connections between poetry and music. For the 24/25 Project\, Opera Omaha received 66 poem submissions from students across Nebraska inspired by the theme “My Neighborhood.” Poets ranged from second graders to high school juniors\, including first time poets and seasoned writers. Project composer Sidney Marquez Boquiren and hip-hop artist Lite Pole selected 14 poems that inspired them to create original music with the poems as the lyrics. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Salon Reading Series: "Chiaroscuro" @ Turbine Flats
DESCRIPTION:Each Salon Reading Series event features a reading of a play followed by a moderated discussion of the play’s themes and how these themes apply to the community. The theme for 2024-25 is “Hold On.” This theme will explore concepts of holding on and letting go. \nThe Salon Reading Series is free and open to the public\, with two readings each week: \n\nthe first on Sunday afternoon at 2pm in the Turbine Flats Resonator Gallery at 2124 Y St\nthe second on Wednesday evening at 6:30pm  in the Eastmont Living’s theater space at 6315 O St in Lincoln.\n\nChiaroscuro\nBy Brian Bornstein\nMichelangelo Merisi\, a leading artist of his time\, was neglected for several centuries before gaining renewed appreciation. Known now as Caravaggio\, he is regarded as one of the most talented and influential painters of the late Renaissance\, whose chiaroscuro style continues to be taught and copied. Through an exploration of Caravaggio’s life and work\, the play examines the nature of genius\, the role of the media\, and the relation of art to celebrity and madness.

DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nJeff’s poetry interrogates how deep senselessness runs in a post-truth and truthiness world. \nJeff Alessandrelli is most recently the author of the book And Yet (Future Tense Books\, 2024). The Kenyon Review called his 2019 poetry collection Fur Not Light an “example of radical humility…its poems enact a quiet but persistent empathy in the world of creative writing.” Recent work by Alessandrelli appears or is forthcoming in The American Poetry Review\, Chicago Review\, and Buckmxn Journal. In addition to his writing Jeff also directs the nonprofit book press/record label Fonograf Editions.

DESCRIPTION:Award-winning poet\, author\, and lyricist Rayma Ramana will present an online workshop focusing on the intersection of healing and poetry for teens age 13 and up. The workshop is free\, but registration is required. Click here to register. This event is part of the Nebraska Writers Collective Visiting Writer Series. \nRayma Ramana is an award-winning American author\, poet and lyricist. She was born\, raised and currently resides in New York. Ramana won the NY Knicks Poetry Slam\, which awarded her a full-tuition scholarship to St. John’s University. Soon after\, she became the Youth Poet Laureate of NYC. She has since performed at events such as the US Open\, Tribeca Film Festival\, TV One’s Verses and Flow\, Pharrell’s Adidas campaign\, SONY TV’s Asian Women in the Arts Awards\, the Immigrant Gala\, the Grand Slam Finals at the Apollo Theater\, Celebrate Brooklyn!\, the Source magazine’s SOURCE360 Festival and many more. Her work can be found on the Poetry Foundation and Academy of American Poets websites and in Seventh Wave and the Southampton Review. Ramana published her first collection of poems through Penmanship Books\, with a release at Lincoln Center. In addition to performing and writing\, she has also worked as an educator and mentor for young poets and young women. She recently received her MFA in creative writing from the New School. Ramana’s current endeavors include running a blog through Medium and working as a librettist for an operetta film. Her hope is to remain a student of wonder and to explore truth sincerely through her work and her life.

Known now as Caravaggio\, he is regarded as one of the most talented and influential painters of the late Renaissance\, whose chiaroscuro style continues to be taught and copied. Through an exploration of Caravaggio’s life and work\, the play examines the nature of genius\, the role of the media\, and the relation of art to celebrity and madness.
