She is a regular performer at regional and national storytelling festivals and conferences\, including the National Storytelling Festival\, Hawaii’s Talk Story Festival and the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. Lyn has also shared keynote presentations\, performances and workshops in Australia and Ireland\, and for the Transformative Language Arts Network’s and Ohio Literacy Resource Center’s annual conferences and events. Lyn is a two-time recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s ORACLE award\, receiving both its Leadership and Service and Circle of Excellence awards. Lyn is a member of the National Association of Black Storytellers Circle of Elders. Lyn’s first publications as an individual author are Affrilachian Tales and Beyond the Briar Patch. Both books are compilations of stories from Lyn’s childhood memories\, enriched with information on Affrilachian culture. She has written several other books alone and has been a co-author on other books. \nPaul Strickland is a professional storyteller and theatre artist from Kentucky. He has a large repertoire of unique family friendly stories\, including reupholstered folk tales\, fairytales for adults and future adults\, tall-tales and even historical stories that just happened to have never happened. Paul was a Teller-in-Residence at the International Storytelling Center in 2024. He was a Featured Teller: New Voice at the National Storytelling Festival in September of 2023. He was a Featured Teller at Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in September 2023\, Cave Run Storytelling Festival in 2022 and many other major storytelling festivals. In November of 2018 he made his NYC stage debut Off-Broadway at the SoHo Playhouse with his shadow and flashlight ghost story play\, “13 Dead Dream of Eugene.” Always adapting to whatever audience is in front of him\, Paul loves telling stories in every imaginable environment\, from comedy clubs to elementary and middle schools\, corporate events and even two prisons – where he was NOT an inmate at the time. Collections of his stories have won “Best of Fest” honors more than 18 times at Fringe Theatre Festivals in the US and Canada. Selections from his comedy performance “Levels of Difficulty” are still played nearly every day on Sirius XM radio.

DESCRIPTION:Kids ages 10-18 are invited to join us for a Writing Workshop with award-winning novelist Andrea Beatriz Arango! She is traveling from Puerto Rico to join us in person and will be visiting the Norfolk Junior High\, the Norfolk Middle School\, and the Norfolk Public Library. Registration will be required for this program. REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. \nAndrea Beatriz Arango is the author of several award-winning books\, including the Newbery Honor Book Iveliz Explains It All\, and the Pura Belpré Honor Book Something Like Home\, which has been nominated for Nebraska’s Golden Sower Award. Andrea was born and raised in Puerto Rico\, where she first discovered her love of writing and eventually became a teacher. She then spent a decade in the United States working in public schools and nonprofits. When she’s not busy writing about middle schoolers and their families\, you can find her hoping to spot manatees at the beach. Andrea lives in Puerto Rico with her family and two dogs.

DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nMaria Nazos grew up in Athens\, Greece\, and Joliet\, Illinois. Her work has been published in The New Yorker\, TriQuarterly\, World Literature Today\, and elsewhere. She’s the author of the poetry collection PULSE (Omnidawn\, 2026) and the translation collection The Slow Horizon that Breathes (World Poetry Books\, 2023) from the poet Dimitra Kotoula\, longlisted for the Anglo-Hellenic League Runciman Award. Maria has worked almost every job\, including as a whale watch boat attendant\, table dancer\, teacher\, barista\, sunglass salesperson\, bartender\, and probably the worst waitress in the entire history of the Eastern seaboard. SUMMARY:Americans and the Holocaust Traveling Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, D.C.\, will be at the Calvin T. Ryan Library on the University of Nebraska Kearney campus from February 5 – March 19 during library hours. \nThe exhibit addresses important themes in American history\, including Americans’ responses to refugees\, war and genocide in the 1930s and ‘40s. This exhibition will challenge the commonly held assumptions that Americans knew little and did nothing about the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews as the Holocaust unfolded. Drawing on a remarkable collection of primary sources from the 1930s and ‘40s\, the exhibition focuses on the stories of individuals and groups of Americans who took action in response to Nazism. It will challenge visitors to consider the responsibilities and obstacles faced by individuals—from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to ordinary Americans—who made difficult choices\, sought to effect change\, and\, in a few cases\, took significant risks to help victims of Nazism even as rescue never became a government priority. The exhibit hopes to challenge people to not only ask “what would I have done?” but also\, “what will I do?” \nLibrary hours are Monday – Thursday 7:30 a.m. – midnight\, Friday 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, Saturday 1-5 p.m.\, Sunday 1 p.m. – midnight (closed March 14-15) \nFor more information about events related to the exhibit\, visit the exhibit website.

DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nDesire is one of the oldest subjects of human art\, not just romantic desire but the deep longing to be seen\, understood\, and connected. In this workshop\, we’ll explore how poetry gives voice to that yearning and how language becomes a bridge between isolation and intimacy. Through discussion and guided writing\, participants will consider what it means to reach for another person\, to be known\, and to find meaning through connection. \nAly Acevedo is a Puerto Rican and Vietnamese poet\, educator and speaker living in the Kansas City area. Her debut collection\, My Dear Cult Leader (Button Poetry\, 2026)\, examines the long shadows of a toxic relationship and the aftermath of sexual assault\, weaving personal history with persona poems that explore power\, trauma and reclamation. Her writing has been featured in Frontier Poetry\, TRASH MAG\, Ink and Marrow\, Anti-Heroin Chic and elsewhere. She lives with her husband\, two cats and dog.

SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Negro Motorist Green Book offers an immersive look at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America\, and how the annual guide served as an indispensable resource for the nation’s rising African American middle class. The exhibition includes artifacts such as historic footage\, images and firsthand accounts to convey not only the apprehension felt by African American travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation and elegance of people fighting to live a full American existence. It will bring focus to a vibrant parallel world of African American businesses\, the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States and the important role The Green Book played in facilitating the second wave of the Great Migration. \nThe Green Book was published and distributed nationwide from 1936 until 1967\, providing African American travelers with information on restaurants\, gas stations\, department stores and other businesses that welcomed Black travelers. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” The Green Book offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nMuseum hours: Sunday\, Noon – 4PM; Tuesday-Saturday; 10AM-4PM; closed Mondays. \nAdmission free for members\, $15 for adults\, with discounts for seniors\, military members and veterans\, and children. \n

Paul was a Teller-in-Residence at the International Storytelling Center in 2024. He was a Featured Teller: New Voice at the National Storytelling Festival in September of 2023. He was a Featured Teller at Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in September 2023\, Cave Run Storytelling Festival in 2022 and many other major storytelling festivals. SUMMARY:Winter Lecture Series 2026: America First - Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Unitarian Church of Lincoln is hosting a series of lectures\, in-person at the church and virtually via YouTube\, at 3 p.m. central on Sundays in February and March. For more information about the livestream\, visit the Virtual Winter Lecture Series website. Each lecture will last about 45 minutes\, with a Q&A session following. \nThe principle of America First has existed almost from the founding of the United States\, usually increasing with any influx of people different from Protestant Western European Americans. America First movements restricted trade and foreign entanglements\, and excluded “others” of different cultures\, ethnicities\, and religions. Isolationism and antisemitism were often major components\, especially prior to WWI and WWII. We examine similarities and differences in the historic movements with the current one that limits and leverages immigration\, foreign aid\, free trade\, entangling alliances\, etc. \nFebruary 8 – Sean Trundle\, historical perspective of America First movements beginning with those preceding World War I \nSean Trundle of UNL’s History Department received his Ph.D. from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in American Studies. He specializes in post-war (WW II) U.S. culture\, but more broadly he lectures on 20th century cultural history. \nFebruary 15 – Uche Jarrett\, the historical perspective of leading economic issues today concerning trade\, tariffs and national growth \nUchechukwu Jarrett of UNL Economics received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. His research interests include international trade and economics\, developmental economics and the intersection between development and energy. \nMarch 1 -Emira Ibrahimpasic and Julia Reilly\, history of selective immigration policies based on racism and religious restrictions that have led to current concerns and policies of immigration and deportations \nEmira Ibrahimpasic received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico. She researches the plight of women in West Africa and the Global South. \nJulia Reilly received her Ph.D. in Political Science from UNL. She specializes in international relations\, comparative politics\, human rights\, and refugee resettlement. \nMarch 8 – David Forsythe\, current foreign policy from an historical perspective emphasizing isolationism\, unilateralism\, and the policies toward Israel \nDavid Forsythe has edited\, co-edited\, authored\, and co-authored books on human rights and foreign policy. He has received various lifetime achievement awards from universities and professional societies including the national Phi Beta Kappa society.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition at the Calvin T. Ryan Library on the University of Nebraska Kearney campus\, the 1940 film “The Great Dictator” will be screened at the World Theatre. \nThe Great Dictator (1940)\, directed\, produced by\, and starring Charlie Chaplin\, is a political satire and black comedy that vehemently condemned Hitler and Mussolini as well as their ideologies. SUMMARY:Opening Ceremony: Americans and the Holocaust Traveling Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Torsten Homberger\, author of “The Honor Dress of the Movement: A Cultural History of Hitler’s Brown Shirt Uniform\, 1920–1933\,” will speak about the rise of Nazism\, setting the stage for the events explored in the exhibition. The exhibition will be open for tours. Light refreshments will be served\, and all ages are welcome. \nThe Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, D.C.\, will be at the Calvin T. Ryan Library on the University of Nebraska Kearney campus from February 5 – March 19 during library hours. \nThe exhibit addresses important themes in American history\, including Americans’ responses to refugees\, war and genocide in the 1930s and ‘40s. This exhibition will challenge the commonly held assumptions that Americans knew little and did nothing about the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews as the Holocaust unfolded. Drawing on a remarkable collection of primary sources from the 1930s and ‘40s\, the exhibition focuses on the stories of individuals and groups of Americans who took action in response to Nazism. It will challenge visitors to consider the responsibilities and obstacles faced by individuals—from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to ordinary Americans—who made difficult choices\, sought to effect change\, and\, in a few cases\, took significant risks to help victims of Nazism even as rescue never became a government priority. The exhibit hopes to challenge people to not only ask “what would I have done?” but also\, “what will I do?” \nFor more information about events related to the exhibit\, visit the exhibit website.
