SUMMARY:The Culture\, Science and Future of Fire
DESCRIPTION:Ferin Davis Anderson will give a keynote talk for Wild Great Plains\, the Center for Great Plains Studies’ 50th annual conference. Anderson will discuss reciprocal restoration and examples of how stewarding a place can lead to cultural revitalization within a community in a talk titled: “How Reciprocal Restoration Fosters Cultural Revitalization.” \nThis talk is free and open to the public\, no conference ticket needed\, but registration is requested to determine seating needs. Please register here: https://forms.gle/DEnFB1uuih2L5HL49. All other conference speakers require a conference ticket. Parking is available in the lot north of Transformation Drive in Zone 9900 and is paid through the Passport Parking app\, details at: https://innovate.unl.edu/parking-nic \n“Reconnecting with traditional practices such as cultural burning is central in our connection with the land and lessening the impacts of devastating wildfires. Fire holds such power\,” Anderson says. “It is our duty to acknowledge fire and to foster a good relationship. As our ancestors understood\, the land will teach us.” \nAnderson is the co-author of “Wildfire: The Culture\, Science\, and Future of Fire\,” a STEAM book exploring the science of wildfires\, the history of fire in the United States\, and the relationship Indigenous people have with fire. Anderson is an enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa/Ojibwe/Anishinaabe/Mitchifs in North Dakota. She is also the Natural Resources Manager for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Land and Natural Resources Department. \nAnderson is responsible for stewarding and restoring natural areas for the SMSC. She works to weave Indigenous knowledge and western science to implement holistic land stewardship practices. This includes using fire as an ecological and cultural tool to achieve beneficial and healing outcomes. Witnessing Indigenous people revitalize and reconnect with this practice has been one of the greatest gifts of her career. Anderson was also part of a team that helped bring bison back to the SMSC – a relative that will help the community connect with the land and their culture. \nClick here for more information about the Wild Great Plains conference.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Raena Shirali
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nIn an era defined by turmoil\, poetry of witness is newly defined by resistance. Although anger is culturally maligned as immature\, reactionary\, hysterical\, and easily dismissed by the structures that be\, what connects us to seemingly insurmountable forces of oppression is our fury in the face of indignity. In this workshop\, participants will work in the lineage of poetry of witness\, considering the evolution and contemporary iteration of the response poem. Together\, we will work with\, not through\, righteous indignation at the state of the world. This is not fine. Let’s whine about it. \nRAENA SHIRALI is the author of two collections of poetry. Her first book\, GILT\, was released by YesYes Books in 2017 and won the 2018 Milt Kessler Poetry Book Award. Published by Black Lawrence Press in October 2022\, her second book\, summonings\, won the 2021 Hudson Prize and was shortlisted for the 2022 Julie Suk Award. Winner of a Pushcart Prize & a former Philip Roth Resident at Bucknell University\, Shirali is also the recipient of prizes and honors from VIDA\, Gulf Coast\, Boston Review\, & Cosmonauts Avenue. Her work has appeared in American Poetry Review\, Academy of American Poets’ Poem-A Day\, The Nation\, The Rumpus\, & elsewhere. Formerly Co-Editor-in-Chief of Muzzle Magazine\, Shirali now serves as Faculty Advisor for Folio—a literary magazine dedicated to publishing works by undergraduate students at the national level. She holds an MFA in Poetry from The Ohio State University and is an Associate Professor of English at Holy Family University.

SUMMARY:Willa Cather Author Series: Karen Russell
DESCRIPTION:Karen Russell will discuss her new novel\, The Antidote. Set in Uz\, a fictional Nebraska town\, in the aftermath of Black Sunday\, The Antidote follows a “Prairie Witch\,” whose body serves as a bank vault for peoples’ memories and secrets; a Polish wheat farmer who learns how quickly a hoarded blessing can become a curse; his orphan niece\, a basketball star and witch’s apprentice in furious flight from her grief; a voluble scarecrow; and a New Deal photographer whose time-traveling camera threatens to reveal both the town’s secrets and its fate. \nRegistration is requested for this free\, in-person event. See event website for details. \nKaren Russell is the author of six books of fiction\, including the New York Times bestsellers Swamplandia! and Vampires in the Lemon Grove. She has received MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Born and raised in Miami\, Florida\, she now lives in Portland\, Oregon with her husband\, son\, and daughter. The Antidote is her second novel. \nThe Willa Cather Author Series is a free program that features mostly virtual but occasional in-person authors who explore humanities topics related to Willa Cather\, Great Plains history\, and art across a variety of styles and genres. The author series was conceived as a way to connect Cather to contemporary writers\, as well as provide an accessible and inclusive space where readers can talk directly with writers about their work. Participating authors discuss how they create their work\, thematic connections within and outside of their texts\, and how their writing depicts shared experiences. Each author series event is designed to include a prepared discussion with the moderator and author(s)\, as well as ample time for audience Q&A.
