SUMMARY:Lecture with Dr. Jacinda Tran\, Dartmouth College
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jacinda Tran for a lecture and Q&A moderated by Bemis Center’s 2024–2025 Curator-in-Residence\, Kathy Cho\, on the “banalization of diaspora” and “militarized infrastructures of feeling.” This lecture will examine the affect of varied psychogeographies of global colonization and dispersal—as well as how some of the artists featured in the exhibition take up the tasks and technologies of representationability amid an increasingly fractured world. \nAdmission is free; RSVPs are encouraged. \nClick here for more information about the “Close to the Clouds: Encountering Digital Diasporas” exhibition. \nJacinda S. Tran (she/her) is an interdisciplinary scholar of visuality\, race\, space\, and empire. Her research and writing examine the affective and cultural legacies of US militarism across transnational landscapes. Tran is currently a Visiting Lecturer in the Program of Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Dartmouth College\, teaching in Asian American History and Queer Studies. She holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale University with a graduate certificate in Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies\, and was most recently a Global American Studies Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University’s Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History. Her writing features in The Amp; ArtReview; Brooklyn Rail; Camera Obscura: Feminism\, Culture\, and Media Studies; e-flux; Journal of Asian American Studies; TIME; and more.

SUMMARY:History brownbag with Dr. Hannah Lahti
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition at the Calvin T. Ryan Library on the University of Nebraska Kearney campus\, a lunchtime lecture will be held at the Kearney Public Library. \nAs the Holocaust persisted in Europe\, Americans reacted to the humanitarian crisis in real time and memorialized its victims. In the decades that followed\, memorial efforts in the United States evolved and expanded to create new archives\, museums\, and media to preserve Holocaust memory. Dr. Hannah Lahti\, Assistant Professor of History & Public History\, will highlight the various ways the Holocaust was memorialized in the United States from World War II to the present day\, and how those efforts have changed over time. \nFor more information about the exhibit and other related events\, visit the exhibit website.

SUMMARY:Native American Film Series: Coming Round
DESCRIPTION:Every second Monday evening of each month\, Vision Maker Media and The Ross Media Arts Center present free in-person public screenings that feature Native American films by and about Native Americans and Alaska Natives. The Native American Film Series showcases stories about cultural heritage\, art\, history\, music\, civic leadership\, youth\, and more. \nComing Round\nThe spectacular Sonoma pacific coast and the mighty redwood forests are iconic elements of California’s and American identity. And forever intertwined with these inspiring landscapes is the cultural richness of the Native American tribes that have lived for thousands of years along the coastal bluffs and forested waterways. In December 2016\, 700 acres of land was returned to the Kashia Pomo Indians from which they had been separated nearly 200 years before. (1 hour\, 30 minutes) \nThe film will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with J. Mitchell Johnson moderated by Georgiana Lee. \nJ. MITCHELL JOHNSON\, Coming Home Co-producer/Director/Writer/Camera Operator/Editor\, worked for four-time documentary Academy Award winner Charles Guggenheim after finishing the cinema graduate program at USC. \nGEORGIANA LEE\, a proud member of the Diné (Navajo) tribe\, holds a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Theater from Creighton University in Omaha\, Nebraska.

SUMMARY:Winter Lecture Series 2026: America First - Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Unitarian Church of Lincoln is hosting a series of lectures\, in-person at the church and virtually via YouTube\, at 3 p.m. central on Sundays in February and March. For more information about the livestream\, visit the Virtual Winter Lecture Series website. Each lecture will last about 45 minutes\, with a Q&A session following. \nThe principle of America First has existed almost from the founding of the United States\, usually increasing with any influx of people different from Protestant Western European Americans. America First movements restricted trade and foreign entanglements\, and excluded “others” of different cultures\, ethnicities\, and religions. Isolationism and antisemitism were often major components\, especially prior to WWI and WWII. We examine similarities and differences in the historic movements with the current one that limits and leverages immigration\, foreign aid\, free trade\, entangling alliances\, etc. \nFebruary 8 – Sean Trundle\, historical perspective of America First movements beginning with those preceding World War I \nSean Trundle of UNL’s History Department received his Ph.D. from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in American Studies. He specializes in post-war (WW II) U.S. culture\, but more broadly he lectures on 20th century cultural history. \nFebruary 15 – Uche Jarrett\, the historical perspective of leading economic issues today concerning trade\, tariffs and national growth \nUchechukwu Jarrett of UNL Economics received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. His research interests include international trade and economics\, developmental economics and the intersection between development and energy. \nMarch 1 -Emira Ibrahimpasic and Julia Reilly\, history of selective immigration policies based on racism and religious restrictions that have led to current concerns and policies of immigration and deportations \nEmira Ibrahimpasic received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico. She researches the plight of women in West Africa and the Global South. \nJulia Reilly received her Ph.D. in Political Science from UNL. She specializes in international relations\, comparative politics\, human rights\, and refugee resettlement. \nMarch 8 – David Forsythe\, current foreign policy from an historical perspective emphasizing isolationism\, unilateralism\, and the policies toward Israel \nDavid Forsythe has edited\, co-edited\, authored\, and co-authored books on human rights and foreign policy. He has received various lifetime achievement awards from universities and professional societies including the national Phi Beta Kappa society.
