SUMMARY:In Search of the Signers Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On July 4\, 1776\, the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. Collectors of early United States history long pursued a complete set of signatures of the 56 men who boldly signed the document. Omaha’s first real estate agent\, Byron Reed\, assembled one of the nation’s most important collections of coinage and manuscripts. Reed also sought a signature from each signer\, and today\, the Byron Reed Collection includes documents related to 49 of the 56 signers. \nThe Durham Museum is proud to preserve and feature it in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States. In Search of the Signers includes original letters\, receipts and other documents from the Byron Reed Collection tied to the Declaration’s signers\, as well as a reproduction of John Trumbull’s iconic painting\, “Declaration of Independence.” \nThe Durham Museum is open Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.\, Wednesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon – 4 p.m.\, – visit museum website to confirm hours. \nAdmission: Adults: $17*\, Seniors (62+): $14*\, Military/Veteran: $14*\, Children (ages 3 – 12): $10*\n*PLUS TAX\nMembers & children 2 years and under FREE

DESCRIPTION:José Valentino Ruiz will give a pre-concert talk on “Rhythms of the Americas.” This will explore the history of composers and musical styles of North America\, Mexico\, Central America\, and South America. The day includes a Lunch & Learn workshop (12:00–1:00 p.m.)\, a pre-concert presentation at 6:30 PM\, and an evening Concert 7:00-8:00 PM featuring the premiere of original compositions Dr. Ruiz has dedicated to Magdalena Garcia and El Museo Latino. \nDr. Ruiz is an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of the Music Business & Entrepreneurship program at the University of Florida. He is also an internationally touring multi-instrumentalist\, four-time Latin Grammy Award winner\, Emmy Award winner\, 2026 Billboard Latin Power Players honoree\, and winner of the Global Genius Grand Prize for Music.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: H. G. Dierdorff
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nExplore how poetry can meet environmental crisis with attention\, grief\, desire\, and care. In this generative workshop\, participants will read contemporary ecopoets\, question the limits of language\, and write new work that reimagines responsibility beyond the self. \nH. G. Dierdorff is a poet from the scablands and pine savannas of eastern Washington\, the ancestral\, unceded land of the interior Salish people. She is the author of Rain\, Wind\, Thunder\, Fire\, Daughter\, which was published by the University of Nevada Press in 2024 and is a finalist for the 2026 Oregon Book Award. Their work has been awarded a Vermont Studio Center Fellowship and appeared in journals such as Cut Bank\, The Shore\, Arkansas International\, and Willow Springs. You can currently find them in Portland\, where they teach writing at Clackamas Community College and poetry through Literary Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Before selected concerts in its 2026-27 season\, Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra organizes a virtual conversation with LSO’s Maestro Edward Polochick and guest artists or composers\, hosted by Nebraska Public Media’s Genevieve Randall or Penelope Morrow. The pre-recorded chat for each concert is available to view online as well as via podcast the Monday before the concert\, and for most events is also screened in person in the Steinhart Room at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts 45 minutes before the concert begins. Please note: two of the in-person concerts are at Lincoln-area churches rather than at the Lied Center. \nThe chats are free to view online. DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nFrom family and memory to the absurdities of daily life\, Greg Kosmicki’s poetry has been praised for its honesty and openness. His poetry balances humor\, sorrow\, and the mystery of being human. \nGreg Kosmicki has published eight chapbooks and seven full-length collections of poetry with ten different presses. His most recent collection\, The dog has no answers\, was published in September\, 2023\, by Main Street Rag Publishing Co. His 2016 collection\, It’s As Good Here as it Gets Anywhere\, from Logan House Press\, was a finalist for the 2017 High Plains Book Award. Individual poems of his have been published in Paris Review\, New Letters\, Nimrod\, Cimarron Review\, Kansas Quarterly\, Briar Cliff Review\, Laurel Review\, Poetry NOW\, and many others. His poems have been selected to be read on “Writer’s Almanac.” He has twice been awarded an Artist’s Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council for his poetry. In 1998\, he founded The Backwaters Press\, which published more than 100 books under his direction\, until it was given to the University of Nebraska Press in 2017 as an imprint of that press.

DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the Tri-Faith Initiative’s 2026 Religious Equity Seminar\, which will provide an understanding of religious equity\, diversity\, and inclusion issues surrounding religion in America through historical\, cultural\, and structural analysis. The sessions take place from 6:30 – 8 p.m. every other week on Mondays and Wednesdays from October 12 to December 9. Click here for more information\, or to register. Registration deadline is the first day of class\, October 12. \nThe Religious Equity Seminar is intended for community leaders and members who want to build genuinely inclusive spaces\, whether in workplaces\, congregations\, schools\, or civic organizations. This includes nonprofit staff\, educators\, faith leaders\, HR professionals\, and engaged community members who regularly interact with religiously diverse populations but may lack a shared historical framework for understanding how religious bias forms and persists. This course attempts to lay plain the origins of the tropes\, stereotypes and deep-seated narratives that have fueled negative attitudes toward various religious communities for millennia – and which continue to give even the most well-intentioned people faulty understandings that foster exclusivity instead of inclusivity. This seminar gives participants concrete historical grounding and practical tools\, like the Five B Framework and the Bridge-Building Model\, to translate goodwill into informed\, actionable behavior in their own spheres of influence. She grew up traveling around the world with a suitcase filled with books and martial arts weapons. She specialized in swords and daggers and was trained in her family’s indigenous martial arts. This isn’t the most orthodox path to adult hood\, but it defined her love of action films and all things adrenaline. After working for the FLOTUS\, Michelle Obama and being featured in IT. Vanity Fair\, Ise White became one of the top luxury fashion editors in the world\, working for Conde Nast Italy and then Hearst China\, developing beauty\, celebrity\, and cinema projects with a focus on narrative storytelling and winning awards for celebrity cover projects partnered with major studios. \nJOHN ENGSTROM (Executive Producer/Director of Photography/Cinematographer)\nAn internationally award-winning Director of Photography and a master of light and technology\, John began his career lighting for mentors David La Chapelle\, Peter Beard\, Patrick Demarchelier\, and Paul Cameron. John is among the most sought-after visual creatives for his powerful\, action-packed vision\, strong team leadership\, and cutting-edge innovation. \nTOM FUNK (1st AC)\nTom Funk is an IATSE member with more than 20 years of experience working as a 1st Assistant Camera on film\, television\, commercial\, and specialty productions throughout the United States and internationally. Tom studied film at Brooks Institute in Ventura\, California\, beginning in 2004\, where he was able to hone his passion for camera work and pulling focus. After graduating with a BA in Commercial Film Making\, he spent 15 years working in Los Angeles\, building a career in the film industry first as a film loader\, then as a 2nd AC\, and eventually as a highly technical and knowledgeable 1st AC. In 2020\, Tom relocated to Kansas City\, where he currently works on large-scale commercials\, features\, and television productions. He is also one of the owners of Lucky Duck Camera House\, Kansas City’s first camera rental house. \nDEREK GARZA (Executive Producer/Cast)\nDerek Garza is a multiracial actor born in Colorado and raised in Oklahoma. He is Wichita & Comanche and is an enrolled tribal member of the Wichita Nation. Derek also identifies as Mexican and has roots in the Mexica tribe or more commonly known as Aztecs. He calls DC his home after moving from Chicago with his family and works both internationally and regionally. His acting career spans Theater\, TV & Film and he is currently working at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Great Lakes Theater as Theseus & Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

SUMMARY:The Hills We Share Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Hills We Share explores the history of Southside Terrace\, Jetter’s Depot\, and South Omaha through historic documents\, photographs\, and artifacts. The exhibit features original 1939 architectural drawings of Southside Terrace on trace paper\, correspondence from the Housing Authority\, newspaper clippings from the 1930s and 1940s\, and historic photos courtesy of The Durham Museum. Together\, these materials offer a glimpse into the people\, places\, and decisions that shaped the neighborhood—and invite us to reflect on the connections between South Omaha’s past and future. \nTours of this exhibit in the community space at Jetter’s Depot are available by appointment Tuesday through Friday\, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information call or email 402-916-9293  or etienne@canopysouth.org
