Hinzo (Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska)\, assistant professor of history and ethnic studies at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. \nFamily-friendly events associated with the exhibition include traditional Native American dancing and a panel discussion on April 5 and activities and games on April 6. \nAdmission is free. SUMMARY:The People's Recorder: A Creative Incubator
DESCRIPTION:The People’s Recorder is a national podcast on the 1930s Federal Writers’ Project: what it achieved\, where it fell short\, and what it means for Americans today. An episode about Nebraska is now available. \nEpisode Summary \nIn the 1930s\, the notion of making an incubator for creativity in a region devastated by the Great Depression got tested in Nebraska. This episode looks at what happened there when the Writers’ Project came to town\, through a group of creatives from contrasting backgrounds\, including a hobo\, a nurse and a hardware store poet – all under the watchful eye of a university professor and a celebrated novelist. \nStarting from chaos\, they ignited a surprising alchemy and made the Lincoln office one of the most productive Writers’ Project hubs in the country. The Season 1 finale listens in as Americans face war clouds on the horizon\, and a national radio show asks\, “Can we count on youth to uphold the American Way?” \nListen to episode 10\, A Creative Incubator\, on their website\, or on your favorite podcast platform. \nApple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-peoples-recorder/id1693003215\nAcast: https://shows.acast.com/peoples-recorder\nSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/72IK20V1a7nNhhbehGBIYm?si=479e79a135be4187\nAudible: https://www.amazon.com/The-Peoples-Recorder/dp/B0C88BW4R2\niHeart: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-the-peoples-recorder-117528281/

SUMMARY:"Saints Above & Sinners Below" Mexican & Spanish Colonial Devotional Art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit presents devotional art (iconography\, ex-votos\, retablos\, etc.) from a private collection. Devotional art is considered “for the people\, by the people.” In contrast to art created by classically trained artists in guilds\, devotional art was produced by self-taught artists (many of whom were moderate- to low-income) and usually painted on wood or tin. During the Spanish Colonial period\, when many were illiterate\, this art was a medium for education and veneration. \nThe exhibition will be viewable Tuesday through Friday noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday / Sunday 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. \nOpening reception March 2 from noon to 3 p.m. \nDr. Kinga J. Novak will present two lectures about this devotional art – one in English\, and one in Spanish. \nEnglish talk: March 13 at 6:30 pm \nSpanish talk: March 15 at 10:00 am

SUMMARY:Virtual Winter Lecture Series 2025: Envisioning A Resilient Future
DESCRIPTION:The Unitarian Church of Lincoln is hosting a series of virtual lectures at 7 p.m. central on Sunday evenings. The lectures are free via Zoom and will be posted on YouTube afterwards. For more information about receiving the Zoom link and viewing the lectures\, visit the Virtual Winter Lecture Series website. \nGovernments around the world have responded with different degrees of commitment to carbon reduction\, made at the annual climate-change summits. As individuals\, we frequently perceive the urgent threat of climate change with a sense of helplessness\, feeling that our individual actions may lack the capacity to effect meaningful change. This series seeks to transcend the conventional focus on carbon reduction by offering a vision of hope that emphasizes community-building solutions while addressing critical challenges related to shelter\, food security\, and sustainability. The activists and experts in the final panel will inform us on local issues and how we can each play a part in resolving them. \nFebruary 16 – Dr. Barb Mayes Boustead will provide an overview from her perspective of a career in climate\, weather\, and communication. \nBarb Mayes Boustead is a meteorologist and climatologist. She received her Ph.D. in Natural Resources: Climate Assessment and Impacts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a dissertation titled\, “The hard winter of 1880-1881: Climatological context and communication via a Laura Ingalls Wilder narrative\,” and her forthcoming nonfiction book Wilder Weather draws further into what we can learn from the weather and climate of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books and life. She has served as an author for the 4th and 5th National Climate Assessments. \nFebruary 23 – Dr. Tim Crews will speak on regenerative agriculture. \nTim Crews is the Chief Scientist and directs the International Initiative at The Land Institute in Salina\, Kansas. He pursued a doctorate degree at Cornell\, carried out a post-doc fellowship at Stanford\, and developed an agroecology program at Prescott College in Northern Arizona. A significant amount of Tim’s research on perennial grains has focused on topics closely tied to climate change adaptation and mitigation. \nMarch 2 – Dr. John Ikerd will speak briefly on sustainable economics and then hold a conversation with Prof. Charles Francis on the topic. \nJohn Ikerd was raised on a small dairy farm in southwest Missouri and received his Ph.D. degree in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri. He worked in private industry for a time before moving to academia. He retired from the University of Missouri in early 2000 and has maintained an active writing and speaking schedule since retirement. He has published extensively on economic sustainability. \nCharles A. Francis is Professor emeritus Agronomy & Horticulture\, with expertise and teaching experience in agroecology\, farming systems\, and global food and equity issues. \nMarch 9 – Dr. Elizabeth Sawin will speak on multisolving and engage with Peter Hind and Marc Shkolnick on Lincoln’s Low Income Energy Efficiency Rental Rehab Program. \nElizabeth Sawin is the Founder and Director of the Multisolving Institute. A biologist with a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, she co-founded Climate Interactive in 2010 and led the scientific team that offered the first assessment of the sufficiency of country pledges to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Dr. Sawin is an expert on solutions that address climate change while also improving health\, well-being\, and economic vitality. \nPeter Hind is the Director of Lincoln Urban Development. \nMarc Shkolnick has served as Manager of Energy Services at Lincoln Electric System for more than 17 years. The department is charged with providing comprehensive and customized customer experience for the city of Lincoln’s industrial\, commercial business and residential customers. His team is also responsible for administering the utility’s energy efficiency\, demand response\, customer-owned renewables and emerging technology programs.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poets Reading Series: Elizabeth Clark Wessel
DESCRIPTION:The free monthly Nebraska Poets Reading Series highlights the talent of Nebraska poets and invites discussion with audience members. All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nWessel unspools layers of mythology—of places\, people\, historical and ahistorical time—and finds their entanglements with everyday life\, revealing marvelous influences encoded in the ordinary. \nOriginally from rural Nebraska\, Elizabeth Clark Wessel now lives in Stockholm\, Sweden and works as a translator of Swedish literature. She’s the author of four chapbooks of poetry\, and her poems have appeared widely in journals\, including Fence\, Boston Review\, and the American Poetry Review. None of It Belongs to Me (Game Over Books\, 2024) is her first full-length collection.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Anastacia Reneé
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nMemory (the deliberate act of remembering) is a form of willed creation. It is not an effort to find out the way it really was–that is research. The point is to dwell on the way it appeared and why it appeared in that particular way.\n-Toni Morrison \nIn this genre-bending workshop we will collectively and independently explore and interrogate stories\, communal folklore and our archival of memories. We will lay our memories (from multiple points of view) out and jigsaw them to create first drafts of The Haibun\, and The Nines poems. All class text will be provided by workshop facilitator. \nANASTACIA RENEÉ is a queer writer\, educator\, interdisciplinary artist\, playwright\, former radio host\, TEDX speaker\, and podcaster. She is the author of Here In The (Middle) Of Nowhere\, Side Notes From The Archivist\, (v.) and Forget It. Sidenotes from the Archivist was selected as one of “NYPL Best Books of 2023\,” and\, The American Library Associations (RUSA) “Notable Books of 2024.” She is a recipient of the James W. Ray Distinguished Artist Award (Literary) and she was selected by NBC News as part of the list of “Queer Artist of Color Dominate 2021’s Must See LGBTQ Art Shows\,” for (Don’t Be Absurd) Alice in Parts\, an installation at Frye Art Museum.

SUMMARY:"Saints Above\, Sinners Below" gallery talk with Kinga Novak
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with an exhibition of devotional art\, Dr. Kinga J. Novak will present a gallery talk on “Saints Above\, Sinners Below: Mexican and Spanish Colonial Devotional Art from 1720 to 1920.” A reception will follow her talk. \nDr. Novak is Assistant Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at the prestigious Bard Early College in Manhattan\, New York. Her dissertation on Mexican ex-votos is considered the best in the field. \nThis exhibit presents devotional art (iconography\, ex-votos\, retablos\, etc.) from a private collection. \nDr. Maya Stanfield-Mazzi\, Professor of Art History at the University of Florida\,  is contributing a scholarly essay on Spanish Colonial Devotional Art\, which will be published in the program handed out at the lecture and placed on the CAP website for download. \nThe exhibition will be viewable from March 2 through April 20\, Tuesday through Friday noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday / Sunday 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
