Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nJuly 20 – Matt Mason It’s Time for the Lightening Round! Poetry is always about concision\, about writing something small and quick with no excess of words or lines or ideas or lines like this way-too-long sentence. Let’s see what we can do with shorter poems\, fitting ideas into smaller spaces like snapshots or meditations. \nMATT MASON is the Nebraska State Poet and was Executive Director of the Nebraska Writers Collective from 2009-2022. Through the US State Department\, he has run workshops in Botswana\, Romania\, Nepal\, and Belarus.

DESCRIPTION:To commemorate National Day of Racial Healing\, the University Libraries have invited Jewel Rodgers\, Nebraska State Poet\, as keynote speaker on January 20\, 2026\, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Auditorium (LLS 102) of Love Library South. Join us after the program in Love Library’s lobby for refreshments and an opportunity to chat directly with the speaker and others. Registration is preferred but not required. This event is free and open to the campus community and the public. \nRodgers will share insights from her journey as the Nebraska State Poet\, using spoken-word poetry to illuminate her experiences as an artist\, former UNL student\, and community builder. Through her talk\, she will inspire connection\, collaborative action\, and the power of creativity to spark change and foster healing.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Nebraska State Historical Society for this month’s Lunchbox Lecture featuring Jewel Rodgers\, Nebraska State Poet 2025–2029! \nDuring her keynote\, Jewel reflects on her journey as a self-described spoken word artist stepping into a traditionally page-centered literary role. Through performance and storytelling\, she explores the cultural roots of spoken word\, its historical ties to jazz and artistic movements\, and the skepticism it sometimes encounters in academic poetry spaces. Blending poems with personal narrative\, she demonstrates how spoken word serves as a powerful tool for both artistic excellence and community-building. \nEvent admission is free.
