DESCRIPTION:The 29th Annual Buffalo Commons Storytelling and Music Festival is packed with opportunities to laugh\, have fun\, learn and remember. Journey through the dusty trails\, starlit nights\, and campfire tales of the American cowboy with nationally-renowned cowboy storytellers and musicians. Their gripping tales and raw\, authentic songs from the trail is the ultimate tribute to the Grit of the West. A guest visual artist will open your heart and stimulate your perceptions as you follow his life’s journey through his photography\, art and stories. A bus tour will take you to a site where ordinary Nebraskans had an extraordinary impact on history. Festival 2026 will be one to love\, from the Historic Fox Theatre stage show\, dinner cabaret\, historical tour and venues\, art shows\, museum melodies and memories\, open mic opportunities\, poetry sharing\, Kids Fest and more! \nEvents take place throughout McCook. Some events are free\, and some require ticket purchase. For full details\, visit the festival website. \nFeatured Cowboy Storytellers\, Poets and Musicians: Andy Hedges and Dom Flemons \nDom Flemons is known as “The American Songster®” since his repertoire covers over one hundred years of American roots music. Flemons is a folk musician\, black country artist\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, music scholar\, historian\, actor\, slam poet\, record collector\, curator\, podcaster\, cultural commentator\, influencer\, and the creator\, host\, and producer of the American Songster Radio Show on WSM in Nashville\, TN. He is considered an expert player on the banjo\, guitar\, harmonica\, jug\, percussion\, quills\, fife and rhythm bones. \nSongster\, reciter\, storyteller\, guitarist\, and collector of cowboy songs and poems\, Andy Hedges fell in love with traditional music by listening to his father’s cassettes of cowboy songs. Andy’s vast and varied repertoire includes classic cowboy poetry recitations\, obscure cowboy songs\, dust bowl ballads\, and blues. He also hosts a podcast\, Cowboy Crossroads.  \nFeatured Artist: Wesaam Al-Badry \nAt the age of eleven\, artist and photographer Wesaam Al-Badry’s family fled his home country of Iraq at the onset of the Gulf War. Before relocating to Lincoln\, the family spent four years in a refugee camp in Saudi Arabia where he first experimented with a camera. Wesaam began documenting what was happening around him to help process his experiences. That experience has sculpted much of his work\, which focuses on capturing the human struggle. Believing that he could help others by telling their stories through his work encouraging them to see their beauty and begin a process of healing.

DESCRIPTION:Bone Creek Museum is partnering with the 4-H Extension Offices of Butler and Colfax counties to offer a photography workshop for students led by RJ Kern of Minnesota. Participants will build pinhole cameras and create original photographs in a darkroom setting. \n\n“Exploring Light\, Optics\, and Storytelling” invites learners to slow down\, observe carefully\, and rediscover the magic of early photography—when creating an image required curiosity\, patience\, and invention.\n\n\n\nParticipants will explore how a simple light-tight box with a tiny opening became the foundation of photography as we know it today. Along the way\, students will connect science\, creativity\, and personal storytelling through hands-on experiences with light\, exposure\, and image-making.\n\n\n\nMore than just a science activity\, this workshop highlights photography as a powerful form of human expression. Participants are encouraged to bring a personal photograph or small keepsake to incorporate meaning\, memory\, and storytelling into their work.\nThrough the slow and thoughtful process of working with light-sensitive materials\, students will discover how every photograph begins with attention\, creativity\, and connection. DESCRIPTION:Sidney Gold Rush Days is a family-oriented outdoor festival. It is held in Legion Park\, Sidney\, Nebraska\, during the second weekend of June. The festival emphasizes the history of the Sidney to Deadwood Gold Rush Trail in the late 1870’s. Lots of activities are provided for children. Activities include free entertainment\, wagon rides\, hands-on historical activities\, craft projects\, and much more. A guest visual artist will open your heart and stimulate your perceptions as you follow his life’s journey through his photography\, art and stories. A bus tour will take you to a site where ordinary Nebraskans had an extraordinary impact on history. Festival 2026 will be one to love\, from the Historic Fox Theatre stage show\, dinner cabaret\, historical tour and venues\, art shows\, museum melodies and memories\, open mic opportunities\, poetry sharing\, Kids Fest and more! \nEvents take place throughout McCook. For full details\, visit the festival website. \nFeatured Cowboy Storytellers\, Poets and Musicians: Andy Hedges and Dom Flemons \nDom Flemons is known as “The American Songster®” since his repertoire covers over one hundred years of American roots music. Flemons is a folk musician\, black country artist\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, music scholar\, historian\, actor\, slam poet\, record collector\, curator\, podcaster\, cultural commentator\, influencer\, and the creator\, host\, and producer of the American Songster Radio Show on WSM in Nashville\, TN. He is considered an expert player on the banjo\, guitar\, harmonica\, jug\, percussion\, quills\, fife and rhythm bones. \nSongster\, reciter\, storyteller\, guitarist\, and collector of cowboy songs and poems\, Andy Hedges fell in love with traditional music by listening to his father’s cassettes of cowboy songs. Andy’s vast and varied repertoire includes classic cowboy poetry recitations\, obscure cowboy songs\, dust bowl ballads\, and blues. He also hosts a podcast\, Cowboy Crossroads.  \nFeatured Artist: Wesaam Al-Badry \nAt the age of eleven\, artist and photographer Wesaam Al-Badry’s family fled his home country of Iraq at the onset of the Gulf War. Before relocating to Lincoln\, the family spent four years in a refugee camp in Saudi Arabia where he first experimented with a camera. Wesaam began documenting what was happening around him to help process his experiences. That experience has sculpted much of his work\, which focuses on capturing the human struggle. Believing that he could help others by telling their stories through his work encouraging them to see their beauty and begin a process of healing.

Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nImagery and Imagination: For the Love of Objects \nWhat do your cherished objects reveal? Explore imagery and imagination as we write about the objects that carry memory\, meaning\, and mystery in our lives. \nHADARA BAR-NADAV is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry\, the Lucille Medwick Award from the Poetry Society of America\, a fellowship from the Poetry Foundation\, and other honors. She is the author of five books of poetry\, most recently The Animal Is Chemical (Four Way Books\, 2024)\, awarded the Levis Prize in Poetry\, selected by Jericho Brown. Her other books are The New Nudity (Saturnalia Books\, 2017); Lullaby (with Exit Sign) (Saturnalia Books\, 2013)\, awarded the Saturnalia Books Poetry Prize; The Frame Called Ruin (New Issues\, 2012)\, Editor’s Selection/Runner Up for the Green Rose Prize; and A Glass of Milk to Kiss Goodnight (Margie/Intuit House\, 2007)\, awarded the Margie Book Prize. She is also the author of two chapbooks\, Fountain and Furnace (Tupelo Press\, 2015)\, awarded the Sunken Garden Poetry Prize\, and Show Me Yours (Laurel Review/Green Tower Press 2010)\, awarded the Midwest Poets Series Prize.
