SUMMARY:Nebraska Poets Reading Series: Kelly Madigan

All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. SUMMARY:Native American Film Series: One with the Whale
DESCRIPTION:In St. Lawrence\, Alaska\, a remote island in the Bering Sea where hunting whales is a matter of life and death\, a shy Native teen\, Chris Apassingok\, became the youngest person ever to harpoon a whale for his village. His family gets blindsided by thousands of keyboard activists brutally attacking him online—without fully understanding the importance of the hunt to his community’s survival. “One with the Whale” chronicles the obstacles Chris and his family face\, amidst larger currents of food security\, environmental racism\, climate change\, cultural genocide\, and social media. The livelihood of the Apassingoks and their village are threatened as they search for a balance between modernity and a traditional subsistence lifestyle. \nSponsored by Vision Maker Media. \nDetails: https://theross.org/film/nafs-one-with-the-whale/

SUMMARY:Making Nebraska Home Author Panel at Nebraska Celebration of Books
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion featuring editors and essayists from The Lives of Immigrants and Refugees: Tales of Migration\, Hope\, Grief\, and Finding Home in Nebraska\, who explore migration\, identity\, memory\, and belonging through literature\, followed by audience dialogue about the role of storytelling in strengthening civic understanding and preserving community history. \nThe Lives of Immigrants and Refugees: Tales of Migration\, Hope\, Grief\, and Finding Home in Nebraska offers thirty-one essays by immigrants and refugees who now call Lincoln\, Nebraska\, home. These individuals have found support\, belonging\, and opportunity through the collaborative work of Lincoln’s New Americans Task Force members and the Lincoln/Lancaster County Welcoming and Belonging Strategic Plan. The stories in this book are brilliant\, harrowing\, poetic\, and revelatory. They’re also stories of survival\, resilience\, creativity\, and a staggering amount of work: learning a new language\, navigating a challenging immigration system\, being perceived as a foreigner\, struggling to grasp strange new customs and traditions\, working one’s way out of extreme poverty\, working through trauma and grief. Those of us who have had the good fortune of not being displaced have much to learn by listening. \nThis panel will feature essayists Eh Ta Taw\, Etza Wong\, Shahad Kheder\, Yazen Kheder\, and Sajia Qasemi \nThe Nebraska Celebration of Books (NCOB) is a free\, public literary festival honoring Nebraska authors\, readers\, and the statewide literary community. The event features author panels\, book award presentations\, vendor markets\, and programming for both authors and readers. \nFor more information and a schedule of events\, visit the NCOB website at bookfestival.nebraska.gov

SUMMARY:Reentry Simulation
DESCRIPTION:Could you rebuild your life in four weeks? Step into the shoes of someone returning home after incarceration and experience the obstacles that often stand in the way of success. \nThis simulation\, operated by RISE\, is a tool for community members to better understand the invisible handcuffs and road blocks of returning citizens. While the experience of reentry can never truly be accurate without first-hand experience\, this simulation is designed to be thought-provoking and educational. \nDuring this reentry simulation\, participants will be given a “life card” and mock identity reflecting that of an individual returning to the community after incarceration. Participants will navigate “four weeks” of reentry in roughly one hour. Following the reentry simulation\, participants will debrief their experience together with RISE staff. \nTuesday\, November 17\, 2026\n3:00 PM to 6:00 PM\nSkutt Ballroom\, Creighton University in Omaha \nThis event is open to the public. Registration is required. Click here for more information\, or to register.

The exhibit features original 1939 architectural drawings of Southside Terrace on trace paper\, correspondence from the Housing Authority\, newspaper clippings from the 1930s and 1940s\, and historic photos courtesy of The Durham Museum. Together\, these materials offer a glimpse into the people\, places\, and decisions that shaped the neighborhood—and invite us to reflect on the connections between South Omaha’s past and future. \nTours of this exhibit in the community space at Jetter’s Depot are available by appointment Tuesday through Friday\, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information call or email 402-916-9293  or etienne@canopysouth.org
