SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Melissa Fite Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nIn this workshop we’ll discuss how often poetry is perceived as something very serious—unsmiling writers wearing black and spouting purposefully obscure references. And while poetry is certainly sometimes that (or a version of that)\, it absolutely doesn’t have to be. There’s so much room for playfulness and joy and humor in poetry—and those qualities don’t mean the poems themselves are necessarily light or light-hearted. Humor can happen for many reasons\, one of which is that it can help make traumatic topics more palatable and accessible. Of course\, another reason to write with humor is just to give others something to read that moves them to tears of laughter rather than tears of despair\, and now more than ever that is as noble and necessary a purpose as any. Together we’ll read terrific humorous poems by writers like Erin Adair-Hodges\, Chen Chen\, and Luisa Muradyan—and then we’ll write and share our own. \nMelissa Fite Johnson is the author of three full-length collections\, most recently Midlife Abecedarian (Riot in Your Throat\, 2024). Her poems have appeared in Ploughshares\, Pleiades\, HAD\, Whale Road Review\, SWWIM\, and elsewhere. Melissa teaches high school English in Lawrence\, KS\, where she and her husband live with their dogs.

SUMMARY:Cars & Coffee: Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame Celebration
DESCRIPTION:During its October Cars & Coffee event\, the Museum of American Speed will host an outdoor panel discussion and meet & greet event featuring BMX (bicycle motocross) pros and enthusiasts Tim Lillethorup\, Karl Hinkley\, Brad Fanshaw\, Greg Grubbs\, and Tim Matthews on their experiences in racing\, stunts\, and BMX culture. From early days on the track to big moments on the national stage\, they will give a behind-the-scenes look at what makes BMX so special. The panel will also talk about how BMX has evolved over the years—covering everything from bikes and gear to tricks\, music\, and fashion. \nThe panel discussion is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.\, followed by a BMX drag race and stunt show. \nAll outdoor activities are open to the public and free. Admission will be charged for visits inside the museum. \nTim Lillethorup is a pioneer of Nebraska BMX who helped build the state’s first tracks in the 1970s and co-founded the Bill’s Bicycle Barn race team in Omaha. As one of Nebraska’s first pro BMX riders\, he competed nationally through the 1980s\, racking up wins in both the Pro and Cruiser divisions. Off the track\, Tim became a key voice in BMX media as a photographer and editor for ABA Action and Bicycles & Dirt\, later launching BMXTV and producing the sport’s first live race webcasts. He also co-founded Reach BMX Systems and the Direct Link BMX team\, mentoring new riders and innovating frame design. In 2010\, he was inducted into the Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame\, which he helped create to celebrate the history and community of the sport he helped shape. \nKarl “Crazy Karl” Hinkley has been part of the BMX world for decades—as a racer\, stunt rider\, and community builder. He started out racing BMX competitively and made a name for himself on the national circuit before shifting into the freestyle and stunt scene\, where his big air tricks and fearless riding earned him his nickname. Over the years\, he’s toured the country performing at schools\, fairs\, and major events\, using BMX as a way to entertain\, inspire\, and connect with people. These days\, he’s the heart behind the Nowear Compound in Unadilla\, Nebraska—a free\, six-acre BMX park with trails\, ramps\, and the state’s only indoor foam pit—and runs Nowear BMX\, a U.S.-made parts company. Whether he’s riding\, building\, or mentoring\, Karl’s mission has always been about giving back and helping the next generation find their place in the sport. \nBrad Fanshaw was one of the original BMX kids in Nebraska\, helping build the scene from the ground up. He started racing in San Diego\, but when his family moved to Omaha in 1975\, he jumped right in—helping create the Spinnin’ Spokes BMX track and racing at Yankee Hill\, Nebraska’s first official BMX track. Brad rode for Bill’s Bicycle Barn and went on to compete at the pro level\, even landing in the ABA’s national top 15. Off the track\, he helped shape BMX media as Editor of ABA Action and Bicycles & Dirt\, and later worked in marketing for the American Bicycle Association. He was inducted into the Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame in 2010 for everything he’s done to grow the sport.

SUMMARY:Bison exhibit at University of Nebraska State Museum Morrill Hall
DESCRIPTION:BISON – a traveling exhibit exploring the past\, present\, and future of this great North American mammal – will be at the University of Nebraska State Museum Morrill Hall from November 8 through May 31. \nThe exhibit explores the significance of bison in the cultures of Plains Indian peoples–particularly as a resource for food\, clothing\, shelter and tools. That co-existence changed dramatically with the closing of the frontier that brought new settlers with livestock to compete for grass and water during a time of climate and habitat change. These developments were exacerbated by the commodification of the bison as hide and bone in late nineteenth century industrialization. The most recent chapter of the bison story is both significant and complex: the romance of rescuing and preserving bison; the science of genetic diversity within the species; the dynamics of poachers\, profiteers\, and producers both industrial and small-scale; marketing bison fiber and meat to the 21st century customer. The exhibit highlights the role of the National Buffalo Foundation in bringing together a community of stakeholders to celebrate and promote the bison’s heritage and to raise awareness of that story. \nThe museum is open Tuesday – Saturday 9:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm – 5:00pm\nMorrill Hall is closed on Mondays and select holidays (January 1\, July 4\, Thanksgiving Day\, December 24 & 25). \nMuseum admission: $13.00\, Children (ages 3-11) $7.50\, under 3 FREE\nMuseums for All (with SNAP\, EBT\, or WIC Card) $1.00\nMuseum Members\, UNL NCard Holders\, ASTC Members\, Blue Star (active-duty military\, guard\, reserves & families with ID) FREE\n*A $1 discount is available for Seniors (65+)\, or Active/Veteran Military (with ID) on regular admission

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Courtney LeBlanc
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nHow can pop culture provide new and inventive ways to write poems\, present complex truths\, and provide an avenue into our deepest emotions? In this generative workshop\, poet Courtney LeBlanc will provide examples that effectively\, and creatively\, weave pop culture into their poems. How does an American Girl doll represent your childhood? How does Nirvana or Taylor Swift inspire you? How does your favorite horror movie reflect your own truth or trauma? We’ll read poems together\, discuss them\, and then Courtney will provide prompts to write your own pop culture-inspired poems. \nCourtney LeBlanc is the author of the full-length collections Her Dark Everything; Her Whole Bright Life (winner of the Jack McCarthy Book Prize); Exquisite Bloody\, Beating Heart; and Beautiful & Full of Monsters. She is the Arlington County Poet Laureate and the founder and editor-in-chief of Riot in Your Throat\, an independent poetry press. She is also the founder of the Poetry Coven\, a monthly generative poetry workshop. She loves nail polish\, tattoos\, and a soy latte each morning.

SUMMARY:Exploring Japanese History and Culture in Nebraska VETERANS HOME AUDIENCE ONLY
DESCRIPTION:Curated discussion on the play “Momotaro: The Peach Boy of Japan” with Courtney Cairncross led by Vickie Sakurada Schaepler. \nThis event is for an invited audience only. \nMomotaro is a beloved Japanese folktale about a boy who is miraculously born from a giant peach. An elderly\, childless couple discovers the peach floating down the river\, and when they try to eat it\, it splits open to reveal a baby boy inside. They name him Momotaro\, meaning “Peach Boy\,” and raise him as their own.  As he grows up\, Momotaro becomes strong and brave. When he learns about a band of ogres who are terrorizing nearby villages\, he sets out on a journey to defeat them. Along the way\, he befriends a dog\, a monkey\, and a pheasant by offering them delicious millet dumplings and they join him on his quest.  Together\, they travel to Oni Island\, work as a team to outsmart and defeat the ogres\, and return home victorious\, bringing back treasure and peace to the land.  The story is narrated in the traditional clown style by beloved Japanese figures\, with iconic tricksters bringing chaos and cleverness along the way.

SUMMARY:Not Too Far Distant - Arnold
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with educational events for local students and a Veteran’s Day program at 9:30 a.m. on November 11th\, the play “Not Too Far Distant” will be presented at 6 p.m. on November 10 at Arnold Public Schools\, with Blixt Foundation staff and local veterans hosting an open house prior to and following the Monday night performance. Local historical military memorabilia will also be on display during the two-day event. \n“It’s almost unbelievable that anyone could be hardened to the point of doing the brutal things they did. …” \nA young man from the Midwest is sent to war\, carrying with him the hopes of the free world. What Staff Sergeant Clarence Williams encounters there challenges and changes humanity forever. History touches the present when a new generation takes a journey through time to experience World War II alongside Clarence himself. Centered around his personal letters home\, we learn that sometimes what seems so far away is much closer than we think. Filled with hope and heart\, Not Too Far Distant honors the experience of the American soldier and reminds us that we all have the power — and the responsibility —  to help create a brighter future. \n
