DESCRIPTION:Each Salon Reading Series event features a reading of a play followed by a moderated discussion of the play’s themes and how these themes apply to the community. The theme for 2024-25 is “Hold On.” This theme will explore concepts of holding on and letting go. \nThe Salon Reading Series is free and open to the public\, with two readings each week: \n\nthe first on Sunday afternoon at 2pm in the Turbine Flats Resonator Gallery at 2124 Y St\nthe second Wednesday evening at 6:30pm  in the Eastmont Living’s theater space at 6315 O St in Lincoln.\n\nWasabia\nBy Wendy Herlich\nVivian\, staring down the barrel of dementia\, and Carla\, desperate to shine as a young hospice volunteer\, strike up an unlikely friendship\, which is thrown into question when Vivian enlists Carla’s help in getting life-ending drugs from a hapless musician. SUMMARY:The Culture\, Science and Future of Fire
DESCRIPTION:Ferin Davis Anderson will give a keynote talk for Wild Great Plains\, the Center for Great Plains Studies’ 50th annual conference. Anderson will discuss reciprocal restoration and examples of how stewarding a place can lead to cultural revitalization within a community in a talk titled: “How Reciprocal Restoration Fosters Cultural Revitalization.” \nThis talk is free and open to the public\, no conference ticket needed\, but registration is requested to determine seating needs. Please register here: https://forms.gle/DEnFB1uuih2L5HL49. All other conference speakers require a conference ticket. Parking is available in the lot north of Transformation Drive in Zone 9900 and is paid through the Passport Parking app\, details at: https://innovate.unl.edu/parking-nic \n“Reconnecting with traditional practices such as cultural burning is central in our connection with the land and lessening the impacts of devastating wildfires. Fire holds such power\,” Anderson says. “It is our duty to acknowledge fire and to foster a good relationship. As our ancestors understood\, the land will teach us.” \nAnderson is the co-author of “Wildfire: The Culture\, Science\, and Future of Fire\,” a STEAM book exploring the science of wildfires\, the history of fire in the United States\, and the relationship Indigenous people have with fire. Anderson is an enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa/Ojibwe/Anishinaabe/Mitchifs in North Dakota. She is also the Natural Resources Manager for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Land and Natural Resources Department. \nAnderson is responsible for stewarding and restoring natural areas for the SMSC. She works to weave Indigenous knowledge and western science to implement holistic land stewardship practices. This includes using fire as an ecological and cultural tool to achieve beneficial and healing outcomes. Witnessing Indigenous people revitalize and reconnect with this practice has been one of the greatest gifts of her career. Anderson was also part of a team that helped bring bison back to the SMSC – a relative that will help the community connect with the land and their culture. \nClick here for more information about the Wild Great Plains conference.

SUMMARY:Winchell Lecture: "Where Do Pandemics Come From?" with Monica Green
DESCRIPTION:On April 24th at 6:00PM in Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center rooms 201-209\, the Department of History will welcome Dr. Monica Green as this year’s Richard Dean Winchell Lecturer. Discover how pandemics truly begin—and why they thrive—by tracing their path from medieval plagues to modern outbreaks. In this talk\, Dr. Green will reveal how infectious diseases jump species barriers\, travel global networks\, and persist for centuries. Drawing on cutting-edge genetics and fresh insights into the Black Death\, she’ll show how history can guide us in confronting pandemics today—and preventing them tomorrow. \nFree registration is required \nDr. Monica H. Green is an award-winning historian specializing in the history of medicine and global health\, with a particular focus on the medieval period. Her pioneering work bridges the humanities and sciences\, integrating historical research with cutting-edge genetics to explore the origins and spread of pandemics\, including the Black Death. A Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America\, Dr. Green has published extensively on the history of disease\, women’s health\, and medical knowledge transmission across cultures. As an independent scholar\, she continues to shape global conversations on historical epidemiology and the interdisciplinary study of health.

SUMMARY:44th Annual Neihardt Spring Conference “Twilight of the Sioux: From the Indian Wars to Wounded Knee”
DESCRIPTION:The conference theme this year is inspired by the 100th anniversary of the publication of The Twilight of the Sioux. Published as a combination of the last two chapters (or songs) of John Neihardt’s book “A Cycle of the West\,” the book “Twilight of the Sioux” addresses the tragedy experienced by Plains Indians in the “Song of the Indian Wars” and “Song of the Messiah.” The former tells of the period of migration and the last great fight for the bison pastures between the invading white race and the Plains Indians (1854-1890)\, and the latter addresses the conquered people and the worldly end of their great dream\, closing with the battle of Wounded Knee (1890). The historical events that Neihardt wrote about changed the United States in innumerable and fundamental ways. Using his writing as the framework and centering Native American experts as speakers\, this conference will spark discussion by broadening perspectives and considering the long-term impact of how history is framed. \nTickets are required\, and the price ranges from $15-$35\, depending on student/member status and the inclusion of lunch. Click here for more information\, and to purchase tickets. \nTopics and speakers include: \nIncorporating and Engaging Native Histories on Public Lands\, Broc Anderson\, M.A.\, Director of Historic Sites for the Nebraska State Historical Society \nThe Act and Impact of Crazy Horse’s Death at Ft. Robinson\, Sandy Wounded Arrow\, M.A.\, Site Director\, Ft. Robinson Nebraska State Historic Site \nLakota Oral Tradition in “Black Elk Speaks\,” Delphine Red Shirt\, PhD\, Stanford University \n“The Oregon Trail” and Native Representation on the Plains\, Margaret Huettl\, PhD\, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh \nNAGPRA – Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act\, Calvin Harlan\, Acting Deputy Chief\, Omaha Tribe of Nebraska \nModerator: Nancy Gillis

SUMMARY:Vaquero: The Genesis of the Texas Cowboy
DESCRIPTION:“Vaquero” was created by the Wittliff Collections at the Alkek Library\, Texas State University-San Marcos\, presented in partnership with Humanities Texas. It features sixty-two digital carbon prints with bilingual narrative text that reveal the muscle\, sweat and drama that went into roping a calf in thick brush or breaking a wild horse in the saddle. The exhibit traces the long history of vaqueros\, or cowboys\, into the earliest phases of westward expansion onto this continent\, and the legacy of early cowboys in the development of western locales like central Nebraska. Paired with this traveling exhibit is a Buffalo County rodeo history display that keeps the equine theme alive. \nThe exhibit opens to the public at 5 p.m. on May 1 and runs through June 15. \nMuseum hours are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 – 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for the general public\, $5 for children 3-12\, and free for children 2 and under and for members.

Known now as Caravaggio\, he is regarded as one of the most talented and influential painters of the late Renaissance\, whose chiaroscuro style continues to be taught and copied. Through an exploration of Caravaggio’s life and work\, the play examines the nature of genius\, the role of the media\, and the relation of art to celebrity and madness.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poets Reading Series: Jeff Alessandrelli

All events are free online\, but registration is required to receive an event link. Registration links for each poet’s event and additional details about each poet are available on the Nebraska Poetry Society’s website. \nJeff’s poetry interrogates how deep senselessness runs in a post-truth and truthiness world. \nJeff Alessandrelli is most recently the author of the book And Yet (Future Tense Books\, 2024). The Kenyon Review called his 2019 poetry collection Fur Not Light an “example of radical humility…its poems enact a quiet but persistent empathy in the world of creative writing.” Recent work by Alessandrelli appears or is forthcoming in The American Poetry Review\, Chicago Review\, and Buckmxn Journal. In addition to his writing Jeff also directs the nonprofit book press/record label Fonograf Editions.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society Workshop: Kiara Nicole Letcher
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Poetry Society is offering monthly Saturday morning online poetry workshops. Registration is required\, and registration information may be found on the Nebraska Poetry Society webpage. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. Students\, minors and others for whom the registration fee is prohibitive may request a free membership. \nWriting from out of the ordinary in an exploration in peculiar poetry. In this workshop\, we will look at poems that deal with the supernatural — poems that peer beyond the veil and utilize a supernatural element. From Poe\, Keats\, Lorca\, and Rossetti\, among others\, we will explore these poems and what they say about the seen and unseen world. Through these works\, we’ll consider how the supernatural in poetry reflects deep-seated human questions about mortality\, reality\, and the limits of human understanding. By reading and discussing these pieces\, participants will engage with how different eras and cultures have expressed universal themes of fear\, mystery\, and fascination with the unknown. Participants will have the opportunity to ruminate and investigate poems of the paranormal\, gaining insights into how these eerie elements serve as a window into humanity’s beliefs and values. They will also craft their own poems with a twist of the eerie\, adding to a long-standing tradition of poetic exploration that bridges the tangible and intangible aspects of human experience. \nKIARA NICOLE LETCHER is the author of Oxblood\, (Agape Editions\, 2024) and the chapbook Scream Queen (Orchard Street Press\, 2019). Her work has appeared in South Dakota Review\, Green Mountains Review\, Plainsongs Magazine\, Solstice Literary Magazine\, Querencia Press and Mulberry Literary\, among other publications. Her work is also forthcoming in Laurel Review.      She received her MFA from The University of Nebraska at Omaha and previously served as a Board Member for the Nebraska Writer’s Collective. She was the 2024 Keynote Speaker for the Nebraska Scholastic Writing Awards and a Nebraska State Poet Nominee.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Loren Eiseley's “The Star Thrower"
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 23\nScottsbluff WNCC Recital Hall 7:30 pm \nTuesday\, May 27\nUNO Strauss Performing Center Recital Hall 7:30 pm \nWith reflections from composer/performer and Eiseley scholar John Cimino discussing and performing highlights of his Eiseley inspired musical dramatization\, The Star Thrower. \nLoren Eiseley’s celebrated essay\, “The Star Thrower”\, is a marvel of brilliant natural science and philosophy\, thoughtful\, engaging storytelling and superbly crafted language.  It is a tale for our times and for all times\, a lifeline to something marvelous and true: “we are of Nature\, not above Nature”\, we are connected to the natural world and that connection is the essence of our humanity.  Eiseley helps us to feel and comprehend our impulse to “reach across the species barrier” to help fragile\, endangered lifeforms in need of our protection and support.  “The task was not to be assumed lightly\,” says Eiseley\, “For it was men as well as starfish that we sought to save.” \nThe commissioning team at the renowned Center for Creative Leadership which selected Eiseley’s “Star Thrower” essay to be transformed into an opera\, believed it could inspire in its listeners new behaviors and sensitivities and a realization that leaders — indeed\, all of us — have it within our power to lead by example and lift others from disillusionment and despair.  And just so\, “The Star Thrower” opera or musical dramatization was ushered into the world.  Please join us for an evening of big questions\, beautiful music and inspired conversation.

SUMMARY:An Evening With Loren Eiseley's Star Thrower
