SUMMARY:Theatre and Playwriting Workshop: Deepening Your Creative Practice Through the Works of August Wilson
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with The Union for Contemporary Art\, Metropolitan Community College and Great Plains Theatre Commons\, the Omaha Community Playhouse is hosting a series of community events in conjunction with the opening of August Wilson’s Fences on the Hawks Mainstage Theatre. \nThree workshops led by Kim Louise\, Dr. Khalid Y. Long\, and Wali Jamal on theatre and playwriting will be held on the Metropolitan Community College campus in Building 22 on Saturday\, January 21. The event is free\, but registration is required. \n Chopped: The Playwright’s Edition\, Kim Louise\, Facilitator \nDuring this generative workshop\, we will explore new ways to create plays by delving into mash ups with other literary and writing forms. We will write without boundaries and invent\, for ourselves\, unique recipes for constructing drama. Building on the premise that genre informs genre\, our goal is not to eliminate but to elevate our writing by introducing a new practice or strengthening a current one. \n Call & Response: August Wilson Workshop\, Khalid Long\, PhD\, Facilitator \nTaking their cue from Wilson and his four Bs\, workshop attendees will creatively “respond” to an “artistic call.” In other words\, they will explore the potential of various sources to inspire their creative imaginings. Using a piece of visual art or music as their inspiration\, workshop attendees will produce a creative writing project in a timed session (the beginnings of a creative essay\, a ten-minute play\, a song\, a short story\, or a collection of poems\, etc.). They will be responsible for briefly explaining the project to the group. This exercise aims to get workshop attendees to think deeply through practice about their artistic inspirations and callings. \n The August Wilson Artists’ Corner\, Wali Jamal\, Facilitator \nWali Jamal\, from Pittsburgh\, PA is the only actor in the world to have appeared in all 11 of August Wilson’s works\, the 10-play Century Cycle and the autobiographical show How I Learned What I Learned. Join Mr. Jamal for a compelling workshop to celebrate the work of August Wilson and to strengthen your skills as an actor\, storyteller\, and collaborator. Wali will share personal stories of his time working with August Wilson and dive into the dynamic pathways and strategies used to bring Wilson’s words to life. This workshop will leave the participants inspired and motivated to share their stories with the world. \nDr. Khalid Y. Long is a scholar\, dramaturg\, and director specializing in African American/Black diasporic theatre\, performance\, and literature through the lenses of Black feminist/womanist thought\, queer studies\, and performance studies. Accordingly\, his work pays close attention to the intersections of race\, class\, gender\, and sexuality within marginalized and oppressed communities. Dr. Long has published scholarly essays in The Black Theatre Review (tBTR)\, Continuum: The Journal of African Diaspora Drama\, Theatre and Performance\, the Journal of American Drama and Theatre\, and the Routledge Companion to African American Theatre and Performance. His forthcoming scholarship includes essays in The Cambridge Companion to African American Theatre (2nd edition) edited by Harvey Young\, Zora Neale Hurston in Context edited by Christopher Varlack\, Theatre Design & Technology\, Theater: Yale’s Journal of Criticism\, Plays\, Reportage\, and the edited collection Critical Essays on the Politics of Oscar Hammerstein II\, edited by Donald Gagnon. Dr. Long is also a regular contributor to Black Masks and Performance Response Journal 2.0. Dr. Long is working on his manuscript\, An Architect of Black Feminist Theatre: Glenda Dickerson\, Transnational Feminism\, and The Kitchen Prayer Series (University of Iowa Press). Dr. Long is co-editor of two forthcoming critical anthologies\, including Contemporary Black Theatre and Performance: Acts of Rebellion\, Activism\, and Solidarity (co-edited with Dr. DeRon S. Williams and Dr. Martine Kei Green-Rogers) with Bloomsbury Methuen Drama\, Agitations: Politics\, Text\, Performance Series). The second anthology is August Wilson in Context (co-edited with Dr. Isaiah M. Wooden) with Cambridge University Press. Dr. Long is the newly elected Vice President and Conference Planner for the Black Theatre Association\, a focus group of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). Dr. Long is also the Vice President for Advocacy for ATHE. Dr. Long also served as the Vice President and Conference Planner for the August Wilson Society (2018-2020). A freelance dramaturg specializing in production dramaturgy\, new play development\, and audience engagement\, Dr. Long is a regular dramaturg with the Great Plains Theatre Commons (Omaha\, Nebraska). \nWali Jamal has been performing on stage since the late 80’s. His first encounter with August Wilson’s work was in early 1999\, while doing a seated reading of Jitney with August participating\, reading the part of Turnbo. Over the years he has performed in such blockbuster plays like The Full Monty\, Our Town\, Kinky Boots\, Parade\, and most recently\, Death of a Salesman. But his true love of performing in plays lies primarily with the work of August Wilson. He has performed in all ten plays in Wilson’s American Century Cycle and his one man play\, How I Learned What I Learned and he is the first and only actor in the world to have done so. He has performed the solo show at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte\, the National Black Theater Festival in 2019\, and twice at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh. His next performance of How I Learned What I Learned will be at the aforementioned August Wilson Center for the Biannual Symposium of the August Wilson Society\, March 2-4\, 2023. Wali Jamal is also a television producer\, musician and an award-winning playwright. \nKim Louise’s love of writing started in elementary school and by the time she was in junior high school\, the first of her many poems was published as part of a Black History exhibit at the Great Plains Black History Museum. A native Omahan\, Kim has penned over eleven novels and five novellas\, writing for Kensington Press (BET Books)\, Genesis Press\, and Harlequin Enterprises and earned a spot on Amazon’s bestseller’s list for mass market fiction. Her poetry has been published by the Cathartic Literary Journal and Third World Press. One of her short stories appears in the national anthology Chicken Soup for the African American Soul. Kim is the past president of the New African Writer’s Workshop and has facilitated the North Omaha Summer Arts Women’s Writing Group for the past 10 years. Kim has written 20 plays—one of which received a full production at the Union for ContemporaryArt. Her monologue Yoke Bells was performed as part of the Verbal Ofrendas Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands program\, and her play The Bystanders was a toured\, staged reading at Metropolitan Community College Campuses. She holds Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. When she’s not writing\, Kim enjoys walking\, listening to podcasts\, reading\, cardmaking\, and found-object art. She is a GPTC Commoner.

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with The Union for Contemporary Art\, Metropolitan Community College and Great Plains Theatre Commons\, the Omaha Community Playhouse is hosting a series of community events in conjunction with the opening of August Wilson’s Fences on the Hawks Mainstage Theatre. \nThis special screening of “The Ground on Which I Stand” at The Union for Contemporary Art requires a free ticket\, which can be obtained here. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Khalid Y. Long and Wali Jamal. \nAugust Wilson: The Ground on Which I Stand is the first full-length documentary on one of America’s most celebrated playwrights\, August Wilson. The film features rarely-seen interviews and archival footage of Wilson\, his family\, and other artists who’ve worked with him\, including Viola Davis\, Charles Dutton\, Laurence Fishburne\, James Earl Jones\, Suzan-Lori Parks\, and Phylicia Rashad. The documentary starts with Wilson’s birth in Pittsburgh\, follows his career as a major Broadway playwright\, and ends with his death in 2005. The documentary also features dramatic readings and archival footage of his 10-play American Century Cycle which chronicles the African American experience throughout the 20th century. \nDr. Khalid Y. Long is a scholar\, dramaturg\, and director specializing in African American/Black diasporic theatre\, performance\, and literature through the lenses of Black feminist/womanist thought\, queer studies\, and performance studies. Accordingly\, his work pays close attention to the intersections of race\, class\, gender\, and sexuality within marginalized and oppressed communities. Dr. Long has published many scholarly essays and has written a book about August Wilson and his work\, to be printed in 2024. \nWali Jamal is a prolific actor based in Pittsburgh and is world-renowned in the theatre community as the only actor to have appeared in all 11 of August Wilson’s plays. \n

DESCRIPTION:Could you ever imagine that one of the most popular saints in the Christian calendar of the Middle Ages was… Buddha? \nIn this captivating lecture\, Katarina Livljanic (Ensemble Dialogos) will lead us through one of the most intriguing labyrinths of medieval world. Through maps\, videos\, and music\, she will make us retrace her steps in a multitude of libraries and archives worldwide\, in search of Barlaam and Josaphat\, and show how she brought back to life the incredible story of saints Barlaam and Josaphat\, a Christianized version of Buddha’s life\, which crossed over at least four religions and was transmitted through almost all the medieval languages. \nDue to weather conditions\, this previously in-person event has been changed to an online event. A Zoom link can be requested here. \nThe event is organized by UNO Medieval/Renaissance Studies\, Cathedral Arts Project\, and College of St. Mary\, with the support of Humanities Nebraska\, the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. Click here to register. \nIn “Private Way\,” set in 2015\, protagonist Vivi Marx winds up off the grid in Nebraska in order to escape professional and personal turmoil\, and as a result seeks solace from Willa Cather’s novels. \nLadette Randolph is the author of five books: three novels: Private Way\, Haven’s Wake and A Sandhills Ballad\, a short story collection\, This is Not the Tropics\, and a memoir\, Leaving the Pink House. The recipient of four Nebraska Book Awards\, a Rona Jaffe grant\, a Pushcart Prize\, a Virginia Faulkner award\, and a citation from Best New American Voices\, she is editor-in-chief of the literary journal Ploughshares at Emerson College and co-owner of the manuscript consulting firm Randolph Lundine. A long-time Nebraskan\, she spent her childhood in the same part of west-central Nebraska where her family lived for five generations. She now lives in Boston with her husband Noel.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society: Toby Altman\, Writing the Image
DESCRIPTION:The image is typically treated as one tool among many in the poet’s toolbox. You use an image\, to make a point\, or to ornament an idea. But images are really the building blocks of poetry—not an ornament\, but the structure itself. In this class\, we’ll study the work of Jenny Xie\, a poet who shows how powerful images can be\, when they stand on their own\, asking us to find connections between them; or\, alternately\, to pause on each image\, savoring its particular pungency. We will explore how we see ourselves in the images\, and how the art of poetry connects people through the images it creates. We’ll talk about practical strategies for putting the image at the center of our own writing. What kind of poem emerges when your images are allowed to assemble into unpredictable\, unexpected constellations when your images are magnetized by each other? What new connections are found between yourself and the world around you? \nTOBY ALTMAN is the author of two books\, Discipline Park (Wendy’s Subway\, 2022) and Arcadia\, Indiana (Plays Inverse\, 2017). He recently received a 2021 Fellowship in Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has held residencies from the Vermont Studio Center\, the Millay Colony for the Arts\, and MacDowell\, where he was the 2020 Stephanie and Robert Olmstead Fellow. His poems can be found in Gulf Coast\, jubilat\, Lana Turner\, and other journals and anthologies; his articles and essays can or will be found in Contemporary Literature\, English Literary History\, and Jacket2. He holds an MFA in Poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a Ph.D. in English from Northwestern University. He is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Beloit College. \nRegistration is required. Free with annual membership; nominal fee for non-members. But what do they actually mean and how do we trust that they’re more than just trendy buzzwords? DESCRIPTION:This workshop with Kush Thompson\, recommended for ages 16+\, is part of the Touring Artist Series of the All Writes Reserved Youth Poetry Festival. The event is free\, but registration is required. \nCloud in a Bed\, Moon in a Cage: How to Reverse-Engineer a Metaphor from Surrealist Imagery \nIn this workshop\, we’ll chisel a rabbit hole into the world within metaphor to discover what transforms when imagery unravels. Inspired by the surrealism of Mahmoud Darwish\, Remedios Varo\, and Ed\, Edd n Eddy\, this almost-ekphrastic workshop borrows alchemical imagery\, takes it apart\, and turns the abstract literal. \nAuthor of A Church Beneath the Bulldozer (2014) and creator of the pink-haired Blk Hottie portraiture series\, Kush Thompson is a Chicago-born poet\, painter\, archivist\, educator\, and a fellow of Luminarts and Cave Canem. She creates archival art; centering often on girlhood and the mechanics of memory. Her work has appeared in Poetry Magazine and The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop (2015). Kush herself can be found in the VHS bin at any given thrift store somewhere in New Orleans.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoyed by viewers across the state for its feature-based\, character-driven storytelling\, “Nebraska Stories” covers art\, science\, history\, sports\, performance\, nature and more. New episodes air Thursdays at 8 p.m.\, repeating at 9 p.m. Mondays on Nebraska Public Media and at 8:30 a.m. Fridays on World\, and are also viewable online at https://nebraskastories.org/. \nThe Feb. 23 episode explores the Nebraska landscape moving through time and space by canoe\, train\, bike\, car and horse. Photographer Mike Forsberg and filmmaker Pete Stegen follow a mythical drop of water from the mountains to the plains\, a Union Pacific steam locomotive lets off some steam and Nacho Ride bikers peddle food and fun. Two other stories in the episode reveal Nebraska’s role in construction of the historic transcontinental Lincoln Highway and 4-H trail riders enjoying the scenic splendor of the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey.
