DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with a new exhibit\, “WOMEN: A Century of Change\,” the Nebraska History Museum will host a discussion featuring women leaders in business\, past and present\, and the lessons we can learn from these stories. Guests include Kylie Kinley sharing the legend of Nebraska’s Bootlegger Queen Louise Vinciquerra\, founder of Sapahn Brooke Mullen\, a Lincoln-based business that has a human rights first business model\, Carmen Castillo\, owner of RC Party Accents\, an entrepreneurial enterprise\, and Alaa Ismail\, a student at UNL and recent Inspire award winner as moderator. There will also be comments from Dr. Marilyn Moore and a special demonstration and history lesson from Saro Cider. \n5:30pm – gather and exhibition viewing\n6:00pm – Signature event cocktail and history of Nebraska Cider featuring Saro Cider\n6:15pm—Discussion begins \nRegistration required.

SUMMARY:Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies (1971-2021) Traveling Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies is an 8-panel traveling exhibit sharing historical snapshots of one of the oldest Black Studies departments in the nation. The exhibit highlights the department’s civil rights origins\, attempts to downgrade the department to a program\, and the mutual engagement between campus and community. The banners share archival materials such as newspaper clippings\, department documents\, and photos chronicling events from the 1969 campus sit-in to the celebration of the “Omaha 54” student activists 52 years later. The history of the Department of Black Studies has been characterized by a constant struggle for survival\, but also by the enduring engagement and support of the Omaha Black community.

SUMMARY:The Sonnet Man at Nebraska State Thespians Festival
DESCRIPTION:Devon Glover\, a hip-hop Shakespearean artist known as The Sonnet Man\, will be a part of the opening ceremonies of the Nebraska State Thespian Festival for theatre students. He will also lead two conference workshops. \nDevon Glover is an artist known as The Sonnet Man. He travels around the world performing and presenting sonnets to students using Hip Hop as a tool for expression and learning\, breaking down sonnets into spoken word for meaningful expression. A renowned teacher\, artist\, and writer\, Devon was raised in Brooklyn\, New York\, and is a graduate of Ithaca College. Click here to register. \nOscar Hokeah’s “Calling for a Blanket Dance” tells the story of Ever Geimausaddle and his struggle to carve a place for himself in an increasingly precarious community. Hokeah’s debut novel has been described as a “stunning” example of “honest storytelling\,” and it has been longlisted for the prestigious Carnegie Medal. \nOscar Hokeah is a regionalist Native American writer of literary fiction\, interested in capturing intertribal\, transnational\, and multicultural aspects within two tribally specific communities: Tahlequah and Lawton\, Oklahoma. He was raised inside these tribal circles and continues to reside there today. He is a citizen of Cherokee Nation and the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma from his mother (Hokeah and Stopp families)\, and he has Mexican heritage from his father (Chavez family) who emigrated from Aldama\, Chihuahua\, Mexico. \nOscar Hokeah holds an M.A. in English from the University of Oklahoma\, and a B.F.A. in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). He is a recipient of the Truman Capote Scholarship Award through IAIA\, and also a winner of the Native Writer Award through the Taos Summer Writers Conference. Hokeah has written for Poets & Writers\, Literary Hub\, World Literature Today\, American Short Fiction\, and elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Poetry Society: Radha Marcum\, The Poetic Line From Breath to Perception
DESCRIPTION:How do lineation choices help poets achieve potent effects? Using the work of Joy Harjo\, Jericho Brown\, Lorine Niedecker\, W.S. Merwin\, Ruth Stone\, and others\, as an example\, we will explore how poets use the poetic line to add layers of meaning to their work. The poet’s lineation choices build tension and emotion. As we uncover how the poet used the tools of lineation\, we will uncover the meaning of their work. In this workshop\, we’ll attune ourselves to possibilities in lineation to build emotional resonance\, enhance meaning\, and delight readers. We will discover how poetry connects to the reader using the visual lines on the page. \nThere is a direct correlation between lineation and the author’s humanity (individual and cultural). Lineation choices have roots in traditional forms\, and these forms’ effects are still present in contemporary poetry. Poems with very short lines echo song traditions—the lyric impulse. Short-lined poems may be meditative or\, at times\, express disruption. Longer lines have roots in epic traditions in which the poetic line carries the story. \nContemporary poets echo traditional forms while also breaking from them in their poems’ lineation. For example\, Joy Harjo’s long lines combine jazz rhythms with speech patterns from her indigenous culture. Lorine Neidecker’s short lines\, on the other hand\, express an intense focus on the natural world—a focus that may have been augmented by her difficult life circumstances. In both cases\, lineation supports the expression of the writer’s unique voice and lived experiences. \nRADHA MARCUM’s work is rooted in ecological\, social\, and personal landscapes of the American West. Her poetry collection\, Bloodline\, received the 2018 New Mexico Book Award in Poetry\, and her poems appear widely in journals\, including Pleiades\, Gulf Coast\, FIELD\, West Branch\, Bennington Review\, and Poetry Northwest\, among others. Radha lives in Colorado where she writes the “Poet to Poet” newsletter (poettopoet.substack.com) and teaches at the Lighthouse Writers Workshop \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Theatre and Playwriting Workshop: Deepening Your Creative Practice Through the Works of August Wilson
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with The Union for Contemporary Art\, Metropolitan Community College and Great Plains Theatre Commons\, the Omaha Community Playhouse is hosting a series of community events in conjunction with the opening of August Wilson’s Fences on the Hawks Mainstage Theatre. \nThree workshops led by Kim Louise\, Dr. Khalid Y. Long\, and Wali Jamal on theatre and playwriting will be held on the Metropolitan Community College campus in Building 22 on Saturday\, January 21. The event is free\, but registration is required. \n Chopped: The Playwright’s Edition\, Kim Louise\, Facilitator \nDuring this generative workshop\, we will explore new ways to create plays by delving into mash ups with other literary and writing forms. We will write without boundaries and invent\, for ourselves\, unique recipes for constructing drama. Building on the premise that genre informs genre\, our goal is not to eliminate but to elevate our writing by introducing a new practice or strengthening a current one. \n Call & Response: August Wilson Workshop\, Khalid Long\, PhD\, Facilitator \nTaking their cue from Wilson and his four Bs\, workshop attendees will creatively “respond” to an “artistic call.” In other words\, they will explore the potential of various sources to inspire their creative imaginings. Using a piece of visual art or music as their inspiration\, workshop attendees will produce a creative writing project in a timed session (the beginnings of a creative essay\, a ten-minute play\, a song\, a short story\, or a collection of poems\, etc.). They will be responsible for briefly explaining the project to the group. This exercise aims to get workshop attendees to think deeply through practice about their artistic inspirations and callings. \n The August Wilson Artists’ Corner\, Wali Jamal\, Facilitator \nWali Jamal\, from Pittsburgh\, PA is the only actor in the world to have appeared in all 11 of August Wilson’s works\, the 10-play Century Cycle and the autobiographical show How I Learned What I Learned. Join Mr. Jamal for a compelling workshop to celebrate the work of August Wilson and to strengthen your skills as an actor\, storyteller\, and collaborator. Wali will share personal stories of his time working with August Wilson and dive into the dynamic pathways and strategies used to bring Wilson’s words to life. This workshop will leave the participants inspired and motivated to share their stories with the world. \nDr. Khalid Y. Long is a scholar\, dramaturg\, and director specializing in African American/Black diasporic theatre\, performance\, and literature through the lenses of Black feminist/womanist thought\, queer studies\, and performance studies. Dr. Long is also a regular contributor to Black Masks and Performance Response Journal 2.0. Dr. Long is working on his manuscript\, An Architect of Black Feminist Theatre: Glenda Dickerson\, Transnational Feminism\, and The Kitchen Prayer Series (University of Iowa Press). Dr. Long is co-editor of two forthcoming critical anthologies\, including Contemporary Black Theatre and Performance: Acts of Rebellion\, Activism\, and Solidarity (co-edited with Dr. DeRon S. Williams and Dr. Martine Kei Green-Rogers) with Bloomsbury Methuen Drama\, Agitations: Politics\, Text\, Performance Series). The second anthology is August Wilson in Context (co-edited with Dr. Isaiah M. Wooden) with Cambridge University Press. Dr. Long is the newly elected Vice President and Conference Planner for the Black Theatre Association\, a focus group of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). Dr. Long is also the Vice President for Advocacy for ATHE. Dr. Long also served as the Vice President and Conference Planner for the August Wilson Society (2018-2020). A freelance dramaturg specializing in production dramaturgy\, new play development\, and audience engagement\, Dr. Long is a regular dramaturg with the Great Plains Theatre Commons (Omaha\, Nebraska). \nWali Jamal has been performing on stage since the late 80’s. His first encounter with August Wilson’s work was in early 1999\, while doing a seated reading of Jitney with August participating\, reading the part of Turnbo. Over the years he has performed in such blockbuster plays like The Full Monty\, Our Town\, Kinky Boots\, Parade\, and most recently\, Death of a Salesman. But his true love of performing in plays lies primarily with the work of August Wilson. He has performed in all ten plays in Wilson’s American Century Cycle and his one man play\, How I Learned What I Learned and he is the first and only actor in the world to have done so. He has performed the solo show at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte\, the National Black Theater Festival in 2019\, and twice at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh. His next performance of How I Learned What I Learned will be at the aforementioned August Wilson Center for the Biannual Symposium of the August Wilson Society\, March 2-4\, 2023. Wali Jamal is also a television producer\, musician and an award-winning playwright. \nKim Louise’s love of writing started in elementary school and by the time she was in junior high school\, the first of her many poems was published as part of a Black History exhibit at the Great Plains Black History Museum. A native Omahan\, Kim has penned over eleven novels and five novellas\, writing for Kensington Press (BET Books)\, Genesis Press\, and Harlequin Enterprises and earned a spot on Amazon’s bestseller’s list for mass market fiction. Her poetry has been published by the Cathartic Literary Journal and Third World Press. One of her short stories appears in the national anthology Chicken Soup for the African American Soul. Kim is the past president of the New African Writer’s Workshop and has facilitated the North Omaha Summer Arts Women’s Writing Group for the past 10 years. Kim has written 20 plays—one of which received a full production at the Union for ContemporaryArt. Her monologue Yoke Bells was performed as part of the Verbal Ofrendas Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands program\, and her play The Bystanders was a toured\, staged reading at Metropolitan Community College Campuses. She holds Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. When she’s not writing\, Kim enjoys walking\, listening to podcasts\, reading\, cardmaking\, and found-object art. She is a GPTC Commoner.

DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Holocaust Education is bringing the globe-traveling exhibit “Anne Frank – a history for today\,” established by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam\, to Nebraska schools. \nThe 30-panel traveling exhibit on the life and times of Anne Frank is coupled with a two-day peer training education program that helps a group of students to become “experts” in the content and teach it to their peers\, thus enabling other students to learn new information by listening to someone their own age.

DESCRIPTION:Kusi Taki\, led by Oscar Rios Pohirieth\, provides experiential learning and musical opportunities for audiences to engage with South American music and culture. They sing and engage in discussions around particularly the indigenous Quechua and other peoples of the Andes mountains regions of South America. He also sings in both Spanish and Quechua to bring alive the cultures and history of the indigenous people of the Andes. \nStudents and their families will hear\, learn about\, and discuss the music\, roots\, and meaning of global cultures expressed through music and discovered right here in Nebraska.
