SUMMARY:Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies (1971-2021) Traveling Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies is an 8-panel traveling exhibit sharing historical snapshots of one of the oldest Black Studies departments in the nation. The exhibit highlights the department’s civil rights origins\, attempts to downgrade the department to a program\, and the mutual engagement between campus and community. The banners share archival materials such as newspaper clippings\, department documents\, and photos chronicling events from the 1969 campus sit-in to the celebration of the “Omaha 54” student activists 52 years later. The history of the Department of Black Studies has been characterized by a constant struggle for survival\, but also by the enduring engagement and support of the Omaha Black community.

In poems\, novels\, short stories\, plays and over two dozen books for young people\, Soto recreates the world of the barrio\, the urban\, Spanish-speaking neighborhood where he was raised\, bringing the sights\, sounds and smells vividly to life within the pages of his books. Soto’s poetry and prose focus on everyday experiences while evoking the harsh forces that often shape life for Chicanos\, including racism\, poverty\, and crime. What Staff Sergeant Clarence Williams encounters there challenges and changes humanity forever. History touches the present when a new generation takes a journey through time to experience World War II alongside Clarence himself. Centered around his personal letters home\, we learn that sometimes what seems so far away is much closer than we think. Filled with hope and heart\, Not Too Far Distant honors the experience of the American soldier and reminds us that we all have the power – and the responsibility – to help create a brighter future. \nThe performance will be followed by a scholar-led conversation on Nebraska and holocaust history. \nTickets for this performance are $10 and may be purchased here.

DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Storytelling Festival will give ten storytellers a stage to share their stories\, understanding that our tales help us understand who we are\, celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience\, and give meaning to our struggles. Storytellers will come from across Nebraska\, and some have international roots in Nigeria and Ukraine.  Their stories can all be considered a slice of life as they’ve observed or lived it. \nThe list of storytellers includes Jenny Okoliko\, a Nigerian living in Lincoln and attending UNL; Milan Wall\, a North Platte native and long-time resident of Lincoln; Jackie Ostrowicki\, an Associate Vice President of the University of Nebraska; and Toni Heimes\, who teaches at Southwest High School. Other storytellers include Marcia White\, Madison Hager\, Craig Larson\, Barb Schmidt\, Jennifer Pool\, and Teiana Symnia. The emcee for the event is D-Wayne Taylor. \nTickets are $10 and may be purchased here.

SUMMARY:Sergey Melnitchenko at the UNK James E. Smith Conference on World Affairs
DESCRIPTION:This year’s conference theme is “For Better or Worse: Crossing the Line.” The world we live in is filled with visible and invisible lines—directing us\, connecting us\, and dividing us. We create them\, negotiate them\, erase them\, replace them\, and\, of course\, cross them both accidentally and deliberately every day of our lives. We cross streets to visit our neighbors but sometimes also to confront them. We cross class\, ethnic\, religious\, and gender lines in ways that expand and enrich our social fabric but sometimes also risking tearing it. We cross national lines to see the world and learn about new cultures but also to conquer other civilizations\, imposing our own cultural values upon them. And meanwhile\, nature itself ignores all our artificially imposed boundaries—storms\, heat waves\, fires\, viruses\, and species move and cross these lines at will—sometimes for better\, sometimes for worse. \nThe conference is accompanied by the Crossing the Line Exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery. The exhibition showcases the work of the artists displaced by turbulent historical events including the current Russian-Ukrainian conflict. It features the work of 6 immigrant artists currently residing in the USA\, prints from a group of students and professors from the Wroclaw Art Academy in Poland\, and photographs created by the Mykolaiv Young Photographer’s group (MYPH) from Mykolaiv\, Ukraine. \nSergey Melnitchenko will give a talk entitled “Art is Keeping Us Alive in this War.” Melnitchenko was born in Mykolaiv\, Ukraine\, (located just 60 miles NW of Kherson) in 1991. He began taking photographs in 2009 and in 2018 founded the MYPH\, a school for\nconceptual and art photography. He is also a member of the Ukrainian Photo Alternative (UPHA). Melnitchenko is a winner of multiple Ukrainian and international competitions\, including Berlin’s Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award in 2017. In 2020\, he was nominated for Amsterdam’s prestigious Foam Paul Huf Award that recognizes generational talent demonstrating a personal visual language and style. Melnitchenko’s work has appeared in over 70 publications\, and he has published nine books of photography. \nThe full conference runs from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 and 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Nov. 15\, and will feature keynote speaker Sonia Nazario. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Holocaust Education is bringing the globe-traveling exhibit “Anne Frank – a history for today\,” established by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam\, to Nebraska schools. \nThe 30-panel traveling exhibit on the life and times of Anne Frank is coupled with a two-day peer training education program that helps a group of students to become “experts” in the content and teach it to their peers\, thus enabling other students to learn new information by listening to someone their own age.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Robert Henri Museum and Art Gallery’s annual Holidays at the Henri event\, two new exhibits will be available for viewing including recently installed displays in Robert Cozad’s office (later Robert Henri) and John Cozad’s office. They are both part of the larger exhibit called Robert Henri: From the 100th Meridian to International Fame. The exhibits focus on the legacy of the boyhood experiences of Robert Cozad (Robert Henri) through primary sources such as letters\, newspaper articles and diary entries. \nThe open house will include Christmas decorations along with guided tours of the historic house and art gallery.
